New 'The Lab' Announced
By GAVIN CREWEL
The producers of the hit reality show, The Lab, have announced that the new season is to begin on June 24 in a special location north of the city. The exact date and location of the show have been under intense speculation for the past months from fans and media watchers, partly due to the extraordinary events of last season.
While the line-up of contestants has yet to be revealed, sources from the production company Fraction Media indicate that among the usual assortment of scientists, doctors and humanities students is a PCAG finalist. If true, this would be the first time a senior PCAG player has participated in The Lab and is sure to bring in a whole new audience. It is also rumoured that the weekly puzzle challenges will play a greater role in the show this year in response to accusations of dumbing down, and also involve more audience participation.

Evan Boch, the winner of last year's season, commented, "The producers will surely try and keep tighter control of the show this year -- they definitely don't want any more surprises like the speedboat fiasco, or the cheating scandal. I'm not sure how that'll pan out, but I'm very happy that they're placing greater emphasis on the puzzles." Evan will be covering the new season of The Lab exclusively for the Sentinel.
Now into its eighth season, The Lab has continually evolved, starting from a risky pilot that was condemned by academics and social commentators alike for appealing to the lowest common denominator, to one of Perplex City's most watched shows.
While The Lab has changed its format through the years, its core concept has remained the same -- twelve researchers are confined in a lab complex for months to conduct research, under constant threat of weekly eviction if they fail at puzzle challenges, or if their research is deemed too poor by guest professors from the University (and recently, the Academy). Tensions often run high in The Lab as the producers make contestants compete for equipment, space and a share of the weekly budget, and the constant pressure to achieve often results in outstanding research and blazing on-screen romances.
In related news, at a recent media conference the producers of The Lab mentioned they were considering their legal options after discovering that Earth 'television' companies had apparently copied their reality show concept.
Ooo the Perplexians do "Big Brother". Hmm does that mean they have a Perplex City version of Jade Goody. Poor buggers. Bet they wish she'd gone missing instead of the cube... but then, no amount of reward could have us finding her!!

I don't suppose any Perplexians would consider running a fansite of the show for us?

Does anyone reckon that this is the 'breakthrough' development that we were (seemingly) promised to come on the 19th?? Or, is there more??

There is a university separate from Perplex City Academy? ...or is this some standard British nomenclature that us Yankees do not quite grok?

No, it sounds peculiar to me as well. I guess we have to assume that the institutions *are* separate (maybe one broke from the other) and they have different research focuses...
The only other obvious alternative would be that the Academy *was* the University, until it altered identity/took on a new code of conduct, or whatever...i.e. what was historically Perplex City University has recently become Perplex City Academy...
That's probably unlikely though, as the Academy seems to have been going for years (although you never know...with a community so technically advanced, maybe they've been screening 'Big Brother' since the 1750's, or something...)

Here's a quote from the Sentinel:
Quote:
Geologists Plan Survey
Geologists at Perplex City University are designing a low-cost submersible probe to deploy in Alchemy Bay to create a highly detailed digital map of the sea bed. "Maybe we'll find a few of those old silver Leks in a ship down there," joked team leader Lucas Sevig.
Also check out the April 15th Sentinel update thread for a bit more discussion on the University and the Academy.

That clears that up, then. Good spot! (although it's still a bit peculiar...)
To get back to the Holyoke thread: What do we know about the 'high - tech' goods market now?
1. That Holyoke was murdered by person/persons unknown...and some of his 'tech - goods' stolen...
2. That he often fenced 'high - tech' stolen goods...
3. That many of these goods were capable of doing things like jamming security systems...(oh, and/or keys and driverless vehicles...)
4. That there was a somewhat mysterious 'hit and run' accident some time back when a driverless vehicle went out of control...
5. That something was wrong with Academy security on the night of the Ball...
Or something like that...

Brilliant! For all of you who've never worked in a lab at a level under that of academic (in case there's any of you out there). This is exactly what it is like ...although sometimes they use shackles. There's a lab I know of where bench space is measured to the centimeter and yellow electrical tape boundaries strictly enforced. Oh happy days. Once I've finished this damn piece of crap thesis, I'll be back racking tips and hording the well-calibrated Gilson's. It's not only rats that go round and round on wheels in labs...oh no!
And another thing! Some bastard's just published a paper that destroys my piece de resistance, Chapter 5...I've been gazumped this close to the finishing post...SEETHING!

I don't think they have tv, the paragraph at the end kinda implies the concept of 'television' is alien to them.

They probably beam it straight into your brain via your key. Creepy!

What a weird thing to say! How could we 'copy' anything from them if we didn't have access to PC until last year? We don't even get to find anything out about their culture unless it's drip fed to us by the Sentinel, and that's only been going since March! We're a daft enough species to think up reality shows all by ourselves, thank you very much.

Sounds very much like The Farm which has just started a second series on channel 5 in the UK.
It caused quite a lot of controversy in the first series as it had a "celebrity" masturbating a pig (and other great TV moments).
