UPDATE: Sythasia email

From: infoSPLATbookcrossing.com

To: daleSPLATsynthasia.com

Subject: Set A Book Free

Date: 16 March 2003

Dear daleSPLATsynthasia.com,

Hello from BookCrossing. What is BookCrossing, you ask? It's a global book club that crosses time and space. It's a reading group that knows no geographical boundaries. Do you like free books? How about free book clubs?. Well, the books our members leave in the wild are free... but it's the act of freeing books that points to the heart of BookCrossing. Book trading has never been more exciting, more serendipitous, than with BookCrossing. Our goal, simply, is to make the whole world a library. BookCrossing is a book exchange of infinite proportion, the first and only of its kind. It's a fascinating exercise in fate, karma, or whatever you want to call the chain of events that can occur between two or more lives and one piece of literature. Oh, and we should mention, it's absolutely free and absolutely private, too.

Check it out today at http://www.bookcrossing.com

Thank you!

Since I live in the area, I will attempt the capture this book (Ong's Hat: The Beginning) from the wild, I'll let everyone know what I've come up with

Ciao
Ms. Gwyn

(I hope I put this in the correct place)

Sorry for the spoilers. I don't know if they're appropriate. But I think that Dale's new email is a clue. So if you want to figure it out for yourself...

So, Ms. Gwyn, are you going to search
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
under the table at Trader Vic's, Beverly Hills Hilton
for "Ong's Hat: The Beginning"? YEA!!! OUR FIRST REAL WORLD HUNT. GO,GO,GO!!!!

Pretty interesting that this person
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(lycanthropy)
also released "The Incunbula Papers: Ong's Hat and Other Gateways to New Dimensions" at http://www.darkplanetonline.com/eggroom.html on August 6, 2002.

You can link to that site from Emporium of the Wierd too (www.aglauranj.org/emporium.html)
That is where I think I may have found a possible puzzle. See http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=835 for a more detailed explanation of how I found it from EOTW.

Other "spam" e-mails?

If this supposed spam is relevant, maybe we should be looking more closely at the earlier posts again? The two about getting younger (http://www.synthasia.com/secure/mes022603m1.htm and http://www.synthasia.com/secure/mes022703m1.htm) are suspect I thought, as why send spam without a relevant link? Both of them go to different 404 errors...

Is this site ingame? It has a familiar look. I registered at the "Dark Forum" in hopes I might find Dale posting there. Maybe Sam might know the sn Dale uses when using message boards.

dsyager

I also found that today a dsyager registered The Incunabula Papers: Ong's Hat and Other Gateways to New Dimensions. It doesn't say it was released anywhere but they just registered it and wrote a message saying "Are there any others out there that have experienced this book?" I don't know if it's in game or not, but thought it was interesting that this person registered the book one day after the bookcrossing e-mail was in Dale's inbox. Or it could be a player trying to follow up also.

Anyway, I wrote dsyager a message just to see what happens. Smile

Ong's Hat: The Beginning

Also I noticed for the person that is going to look for Ong's Hat: The Beginning, it was actually placed in the spot you mentioned on October 24, 2002. I don't know that that's in game and it's not likely that it's still there after five months. But good luck if you do find it ... Wink and even if you don't, the spot where it was released is pretty fun.

Having signed up for bookcrossing.com and forwarded myself a copy of their tell-a-friend e-mail, I thought it may be interesting to anyone that hasn't checked this that the e-mail sent to Dale is NOT the standard e-mail; their actual text is as follows...

Quote:
I found this cool site for book lovers...
BookCrossing.com

...and thought you would appreciate it. The website encourages people to Read, Register, and then Release their books "into the wild" and then track where they go and the lives they touch. Great concept... share your books and follow their progress forever. Best of all, it's FREE.

Help spread the word by forwarding this to your friends, and of course be sure to visit www.BookCrossing.com!

BookCrossing.com hates spam as much as you do! This message was generated by someone who knew you, or knew your email address, using the "Tell a Friend" page on our website. If you've received this message from an unknown person, or in an inappropriate forum, please respond both to the sender, and to abuseSPLATbookcrossing.com. Thank you!

Therefore Dale's e-mail may contain clues in itself, and also seems to confirm that dsyager mentioning the Ong's Hat book on the site at this time is definitely significant.

Sorry if everyone's done exactly the same thing...still, seems like a really cool idea and I'm off to release a few books round Edinburgh!

Bookcrossing

Nice thought on the self-forwarding, Stevoid.

I think it's in game, although the actual concept may not be new just for CTW.

I mentioned, when we first started, that the Human Growth Hormone spam seemed unusual, even for spam.

re: dsyager

http://www.pseudodictionary.com/Ong's Hat

Word was submitted by lycanthropy whose homepage is listed as www.incunabula.org, so I'm guessing that the fact that they're releasing books at bookcrossing.com is not directly ingame and the dsyager link is the one we're meant to follow after all...but if the book's still there it's a good memento!

I've tried googling for dsyager, and yager seeing as ds are dale's initials(and Tappan, the location dsyager had given - even tried the connection that there's an Old Tappan in NJ!) but nothing turned up that I could see. No obvious websites either - www.tappan.org looked hopeful for a moment (it's got a globe picture on it which might have tied in with AnonymousFame) but I think it's just coincidence - it's registered to a Robert Tappan who lives in Seven Locks Court, Bethesda MD, which depressingly really exists - I had my hopes up about the lock and key connection for a moment, but I think it's not ingame.

And I've tried anagrams of dsyager and yager as websites too. Now I'm going to bang my head against the wall for a while. The things you do when you have an assignment to finish...

One interesting side note I didn't see mentioned. If you click on dsyager's name you will find a small blurb at the bottom of his info that links to dsyagers one friend. His friend is in California and her name is Flybynight she also regiseterd at this site on March 17th, but has not released any books.

Yeah, bookcrossing is a real, genuine thing. It's been around for a while.

Spec: dsyager

for what it's worth

the German word jaeger is pronounced yager and means
"hunter"

dsyager could be a D. S. - hunter

- AA, victim of incipient paranoia

Flybynight is me ... I sent a message to dsyager and received this reply:

Quote:
Hello flybynight,

It is quite an interesting book. There is much to absorb from this
both as
read and between the lines. Is it truly an internet mythos or a hint
of
something more I cannot say for sure however it does raise wonderful
possibilities. The wish for something more, to discover other
dimensional
adventures, if true make seeking out a functional egg and a partner for
translation between dimensions a priority. If the Princeton connection
exists there still may be scholarly papers yet to be discovered.

What have you read on the subject so far? Have you formed any thoughts
or
opinions on the subject matter? I'd be interested in hearing your
conclusions. Have you read any related works? Ong's Hat seems to be
getting quite alot of hits lately.

Sincerely,
dsyager

I can't decide if this is in game or not. The last sentence makes me think it is ... and the part about "more scholarly papers to be discovered is interesting."

For now, I am going to write back and see if I can determine anything. I will try to put something about "The Wish" in there and see what happens.
