[UPDATE] Sentinel May 30th 2005

Champaign Accepted into Competition
By ALWHIN COPI

The uproar over prodigy athlete Myra Champaign has reached a new pinnacle, with a specially convened committee of PCAG officials judging in favour of allowing her to compete. "This is a proud day for us," said Champaign's father, Klaus Lowrie. "Our girl is well within the rules, and it would be a shame for her to not be allowed to live up to her potential."

Myra Champaign, 14, is the eighth youngest player ever admitted into PCAG competition. She handily outmatched her opponents in trials, and is widely recognised as being one of the best young players on the scene since Serena Duncan's debut eight years ago. Typically, the PCAG would allow her to play based solely on her performance in her tryouts.

Opponents do point to a darker side of the picture, though. "Myra may be a sweet girl, but she is absolutely the product of enhancement." said Jonas Sawgrass, of the Alliance for Clean Players, an anti-drug group. "We are going to fight her admission tooth and claw. We don't have anything against her personally ... [but] allowing her changes the level of the playing field for everybody else."

The controversy revolves around what cognitive enhancement fundamentally is, how long the effects are, and whether simply ceasing consumption of a pharmaceutical can be said to negate all of the effects of that substance in the body. It is now widely known that when Champaign was a small child, she suffered from cognitive and developmental disorders, which were treated with a range of experimental enhancement medications.

"For Myra, the drugs simply allowed her to live up to the potential she had all along," said Lowrie. "When her treatment stopped, she was ten years old, and at that time she was perfectly typical for her peer group. It was only after she went off the enhancers that she started to take these intellectual leaps above and beyond her classmates."

For now, PCAG officials seem to agree with that stance. Champaign begins competitive play during the June holiday exhibition matches. The ACP will not be content to let the matter rest. "We plan to protest every one of her matches," said Sawgrass. "We don't mind that [Champaign] had these drugs when she needed them, but it is unfair to everybody else to allow her to play now. We just want to keep the sport fair and natural."

New Futures for May 30th

Quote:

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Fell down any holes lately, kid? It's a mad world out there, but you can handle it. Buckle up, suck it up, and generally keep up. The destination is so well worth the journey.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
You're boring me. What happened to my brave little soldier? Your life is never a test, man.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Explanations, apologies, and supplications aren't necessary. You are who you are, and this is what it is. You're not being shifty, you're being honest.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Your general thriftiness is rapidly becoming unusual cheapness. For [my vicarious] thrills, how's about you splurge on that special someone. Hey, even seers get the blues.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
Explore your options, cos Saturday's going to be a doozy. Under cup number one lies pat safety. Cup number two reveals dormant passion yet to resurface. Cup number three offers riches beyond your wildest, uh, poker haul dreams. No choice is a bad choice here, jugglepuff.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Sabotage isn't so much classy, but it sure is a hoot.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
I'm sorry, but did you actually need a slave? It's so not cool to lead a dull around by his heartstrings. I don't even want to know what you're actually getting out of this.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
If your mate makes you wait, don't take the bait, just be late.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Could I perhaps interest you in a game of thermonuclear war? No? Huh. Then what's up with the big honking mess of tar into which you just dug your heels? Alright, Wednesday, when you hear the siren's song -- back away, stat!

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Your mind must feel scrambled into a googol pieces. When I'm down, here's what I do. a) Always the sushi. b) A really excellent mindbender versus someone "better" than me. Nothing like showing up the pros, right? c) I advise people what to do because I can. For you though, tamale, I vote option number b.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Tricky position you're playing. Playing both sides isn't the smartest bet when you're playing with major league sharps. Sharkbait, take a respite from the weekend rounds, and give some real thought to whether or not your head's in as deep as your heart.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Get a clue, buy a vowel, and otherwise perk up your ears. If one thing leads to another, where exactly do you think this chica is leading you? Oi, Perplexians, whatever it is that's got you so bothered, let's get over it by next week, m'kay?

And remember, the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

OK, it's late and my brain isn't working but something doesn't seem right: Her name, Champaign. It's different from her father's, Lowrie. At 14, she can't be married, surely? Even in PC, that seems unlikely.

So, is it that she's taken her mother's name? Been given a whole new 'surname' of her own? Ideas, people?

Adoptive father? unmarried parents so she took her mother's name? Umm, not her birth father?

I dunno, there's plenty of options there...

Jeb

My spec: Myra Champaign stole the cube! Haha!

Looks like they've also heard of the movie "War Games" too, eh?

This might be a partial answer to something I've been wondering about - what do they do to you if you're not all that intelligent? (I mean by their standards, which is pretty intelligent!) Maybe Ceretin or similar drugs are used to boost children with learning difficulties and concentration issues.

Maybe it's like being a movie star or generally famous. Names are changed to make them sound more 'movie starish'. So when you are talking about the Games they need a more Gamey name?

Coul the surname thing not be similar to the system in Latin America where everyone has two last names? i.e. his or her father's last name, followed by his or her mother's last name.

Therefore Myra Champaign (sic?) could be Myra Lowrie Champaign. In latin america legally she could call herself Myra Lowrie or Myra Champaign or Myra Lowrie-Champaign.

Possible...

The vowel being referred to is probably "O".
m'kay=okay
Oi=Oh
Chica=? Probably something with an "O" in it...

Dictonary.com wrote:
\Chi"ca\, n. [Sp.] A red coloring matter. extracted from the Bignonia Chica, used by some tribes of South American Indians to stain the skin.

2. A fermented liquor or beer made in South American from a decoction of maize.

3. A popular Moorish, Spanish, and South American dance, said to be the original of the fandango, etc.

It also appears to stand for the Community and Hospital Infection Control Association Canada, but that's less important...
