They also have a /download directory, which is hard-coded to redirect you here (same page the memberlist redirects you to). Curiously enough, /downloads does the same thing.

Making an account ... where? Maybe it was different when you were there (because they seem to be changing it a lot tonight) but I don't see anywhere to make a new account... Please point it out if I'm blind and missing it. Thanks!

The link that was posted to get a account only works once. After entering a few wrong username/password combos,
I was taken to a page to enter my email address if I forgot my password. I entered my email address anyway and received a email within a few hours.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

You -- or someone claiming to be you -- recently requested a new
password for your account.

Unfortunately, we are currently unable to access your registration
record in our database. This is most likely due to our recent
database ''crash.''

Please use the following link to re-enter your registration

NOTE: This link can be used ONLY ONCE, and will expire after 24 hours.

If you did NOT request a new password, kindly ignore this message
with our apologies.

This is an OUTGOING email address. Replies will NOT be read.

Following the link I am taken to a New Account Signup form with the following warning

The form asks for way too much info than I am comfortable entering when iit is unknown whether or not this is a game. Anybody else get a account?

The X-Originating-IP of the email is

Doubting the email address is real, however nothing besides the Registrant name "GFC" seems interesting. Anybody up for a long distance phone call to debunk this website?

So, basically, what we've got is a site which completely lacks the normally inviting atmosphere of an ARG as well as no trailhead or rabbit hole. Even if this does turn into an ARG, it's clearly not ready yet.

I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

...as well as
/images/ <== same redirect
/pics/ <== same redirect
/clipart/ <== Something that looks like an IIS "under construction" page (although they are running Apache 1.3)
/common/ <== "internal server error"

Also--it seems to be hosted somebody's DSL line (via Ameritech/SBC), specifically: adsl-66-73-150-101.dsl.rcfril.ameritech.net. It is on a virtual host, so going directly to the IP address gives you a blue "Oops" page (http://66.73.150.101/). The default host has a very "interesting" 404 page (for instance, http://66.73.150.101/xyzzy/).

Edited to add:
It is running anonymous FTP (with lots of Windows executables, DLLs, and zips--be careful of viruses or trojans).
It is running a lot of Linux services that should probably be disabled or firewalled (telnet, X11, printer, RPC, font server)

Diagnosis: someone screwing around with creating an ARG/game/seekrit-klubhouse and learning (old, version 3) PHP programming as well as Linux system administration.

Also in the source:

"If you need help getting a life, check out

If you there:
Quote:
No life can be found
The life you are looking for might have expired, you've never actually had one, or is temporarily unavailable.

If you don't have a job, find one.
Call mom and ask her if you were adopted.

Bajajajaj. I just feel the need to say that you don't get that screen from putting in those words. I think it's after two failed login attempts that it brought me there.

Well, I put in my email to the lost password thing last night, and got a link to the register page. I imagine each person that does this must get a different link.. mine contained the word 'BlackRose' (my personal favourite character from .hack actually Smile) and Wishi got 'Kite' (the main character from the .hack games) in his link. My account doesn't appear to be activated yet though.

They moved the scroll update to a news page as well.

It's all very curious, I love .hack and an ARG would be great. What confuses me at this point is the talk on the news page of an Xbox project, and a PSP mod.. there aren't any .hack games on those systems.. hum.

In the source I particularly like the alert that comes up in IE:

Quote:

alert(" Right-clicking will result in a coma! ");

Given the .hack mythos I'm not entirely sure I want to try that Laughing

Any ideas?

Please let us know if you (or anyone else for that matter) actually get into the site. I'm very intrigued, but not sure if I'm ready and willing to give my information over yet... Thanks.

Wow, they changed/added a lot of stuff around since last night.

They appear to be registered by
GFC
PO Box 15846

which, apparently, is this place. They even have the same funny 404 page.

Interestingly enough, whois says the site was created in August 2004.
