[UPDATE] Sentinel News in Brief 3rd June 2005
Quote:
Explosion Rocks Hilbert
A Hilbert research lab conducting experiments with unstable forms of matter experienced an explosion and subsequent fire yesterday morning. Fire officials say that the company's control mechanisms contained any substances released with smoke, and no employee was ever in any danger. (Full text)

Do we know anything about Hilbert industries? The only other reference I can find is a headline from the archives of the Sentinel that simply reads "Hilbert Industries Expands"...

well, sounds like it's expanded rapidly outwards now

Interesting. Another random reference, perhaps. No doubt Hilbert Industries is simply named after its founder - but I can't help wondering if there's a pun here on the mathematician David Hilbert. Still, that's liable to be OOG, rather than IG, if you see what I mean...

Just FYI: this is not a new article for today.

unstable forms of matter
I wish they'd give us more info. These guys could have been working on a traversable wormhole or something similar. Two possibilities that I can think of could of caused the explosion. 1.Antimatter (the most destructive power we can currently produce, 1 gram is equivalent to a 30kiloton warhead), these guys could be making relativley large amounts of antimatter to attain the energy levels needed to open some sort of passage to our world. all it takes is one slip of the magnetic containment and bye reaserch lab.(bye continent, if you have enough.). 2.A hypothesised substance called 'exotic matter with negative energy' which is used to keep a wormhole mouth open. we don't know much about it, we can't even agree what it is exactly.(hmm, what if the cube had an exotic matter component, that might account for the changable mass). But it might be responsible for the expansion of the universe and I bet you wouldn't want to be near it if it gets free.
there are probably three or four more possibilities, both mundane and unquestionably strange, but ill leave other people to spec for now.

Sounds more chemical in nature to me although again the wording sounds a little unusual "substances released with smoke"? Should that be "released as smoke" or "released within the smoke"?
[Edit for bad spelling... sorry. ]

Release with smoke sounds like a biological agent :/

I read it as: "The company's control mechanisms used smoke to contain any substances released."
Not that makes very much sense!

Grammatically that would make more sense. It just isn't too logical?

Yes, you see, Hilbert Spaces - Topology - Wormholes. It's an obvious chain of connection, isn't it??
Damn all these multiple resonances between OOG and IG !! I don't know what's real and what's virtual anymore!

That's the whole idea!

That's how I read it too. When they're in real trouble they use mirrors too!
I was trying to think what smoke might be good for, and apart from making you a bit chesty, if you were experimenting with states of matter, covering it up with smoke is effectively adding a whole load of normal matter with a very large surace area, perhaps having some sort of dampening effect? The way it's reported with no explanation of smoke suggests that it would be nothing terribly surprising to the populace to use smoke in this way.

hmm, i read it the other way. as in, controlled any substances with smoke in them that may have been released.
