1 year aniv. for first Axon going hot!

Well, on my clock it's about 5 days until August 24, 2005. One year after August 24th, 2004, the day the axons first went hot. I just thought this was an important date, and that something should be done to commemerate it! I for one am listening to Chapter 1 of ILB again. Anyone else planning anything?

(I was thinking about going a visiting the axon I was able to go to on that day (the only one I was able to get to, anyways) but vacation had another idea. =P)

I'm listening to ALL of it again. It's on my Ipod, I listen while I drive.

God, has it been a year already? I miss this stuff. Sad
Even if it was most of the reason I didn't pass my tuesday evening english class. But good riddance to that anyway.

I'm planning on getting at least the next two chapters of Creepy up for the 24th... does that count?

I stopped by my first axon yesterday. I'll probably swing by the fateful "turned in the SP" axon tomorrow. Ah, sweet memories.

I asked my boss one year ago today if I could leave early that day for an appointment.

I just ... couldn't bear to explain to him that I was wanting to ditch out on answering phone calls at the switchboard, as our company's Operator, so that I could go answer payphones across Chicago, from The Operator.

Happy Axon Anniversay Day!

A trip down memory lane ...

So he turns out to be Grout, and we both say our nice to meetcha's and I tell him that not only are there phones by the movie theaters on the 4th floor, but also another bank of two phones on the 1st floor, by the Bally's.

Grout's phone rings, and he sees that it's 01. We run to the other end of the platform, and 01 looks all excited, and he's listening so hard, and he looks confused like maybe he goofed up, so I take the receiver and hear a sound file that sounds familiar to the others I'd been hearing all morning, so I grin, and yell, "Repeat!" as trains come roaring in on either side of the platform. We repeat a few more times so we can hear it, and then we whoop a bit more amongst ourselves and grin and then we split off and go home, because dang it, three axons in one day is more than the average ARG'er should have to endure. Wink Oh, and I called the Axon Hotline again, and Grout and 01 start going, "WOOHOO, BEER!" and so it was slightly spastic and rambly. Sorry about that, Steve!

That was a fun day. Smile

Dizzy! Dizzy!

I took a sick day. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I was going to be there at that axon location in Ann Arbor at 10 am, no matter what. We accumulated about 20 beekeepers, since it was the only one within like 50 miles. Being right across from a starbucks, someone with wireless kept us constantly up-to-date. Unfortunately for that particular axon, our lead man was a little confused. Smile We never let him live it down, but we've all had our chance to screw up an axon.

I then went to bed, because I'd spent the entire night reading everything I could about ilovebees.com and the accompanying blog.

Happy 1 year, beekeepers Smile Can you believe it?

Hrmmm... this is short notice, sure (concidering how it already is Aug. 24th)... but that got me thinking: How much effort would it take to set-up a Podcast of the ILB audio files?

We won't need to record anything, we just need to convert the Mission Log files on humptydumpty.html to mp3 and set up a feed to point to a new chapter every week.

That way, people who didn't get a chance to experience ilb will at least get some taste of the weekly radio drama we were blessed with, and they can do it nice and passively.. a new episode of ILB downloaded each week onto their ipods, ready for the morming commute.

I don't know about you, but I've had trouble convincing friends that downloading strange .wav files from messed-up webpage can actually lead to some pretty decent entertainment. On the other hand, people know what podcasting is, now. They can listen to ILB on their own terms.

..
.
As for what I had planned to do with my Enhottenversary? I'm going to officially open my new website at 10:44am today, that's the time the original Santa Cruz axon was rung a year ago.

Here's my LJ entry for the 25th.

Yeah, I hadn't planned on taking any time off that day, because I didn't know what would be going on... if there would be payphones, or if it's be something else.

I was Cortana's phone contact to the IRC channel, so that we could get real-time information about what was happening, since the VERY FIRST axon was here in DC. Unfortuantely, it was also broken, so it was never answered. I don't remember who got the first axon, but it wasn't us.

After I figured out what was going on, I took the afternoon off of work. I grabbed some sushi for lunch and took it with me, as I raced to the metro to head downtown. I don't know the location of the first Axon I helped with, but I know how to get there. I actually met AlienDial there, but didn't know who she was at the time, and didn't find out until a bit later.

I think I ended up answering or being back-up for 4 to 6 phones that day. I could probably still find them all, as I know where at least 4 of them are. Probably the most "interesting" one was the smithsonian metro station one. The phone was underground, and at that time I didn't know where to look for phones in the metro stations. So I eventually found some, after getting some help from Cortana (I was on the phone constantly with him that day) and waited. I think I ended up waiting 15 minutes, in the metro station, for that phone to ring. And given that I was alone, I was certain that I was going to be arrested as a terrorist. But the call came, I enhottenated it, and all was good.

I never believed that we'd be doing that for 13 weeks. Much less that I'd end up with an awesome bunch of friends at the end of it. Or that the following May I'd end up in Chicago for a kick-a** weekend of fun with everyone!

I was a bit late to the game, and didn't actually answer any phones until a few weeks in. After that though, me and a buddy made sure Pittsburgh had 100% coverage. I can't believe its been a year already! What a great experience.

Great work on those Pittsburgh axons. I only got one, but I wish I could have done more. I still think it was the best before the 24th, when we didn't know what was going to happen!
