mixing metaphores is a legitimate figure of speech IMO
it can fail though.
it can be very funny.
depends on the intent and skill of the writer -- mark twain used mixed metaphores with great success
as for me i cant spell, use caps or apostrophes -- )
i think she meant it intentionally

Cultural Slang On the general topic of "shark" vs "sharp", I just wanted to point out that there are alot of people from different counties writing and commenting on the posts here....and maybe there is a difference in the slang we use.
Just a thought.

I agree, but Violet's not made me laugh with that one! I think you're right tanner, she must have meant it intentionally if it's a mixed metaphor, or else she's no good at English
* edited because I used a naughty word and that was naughty

It is also possible that because Perplex City is (allegedly) a parallel universe, the story from which the phrase emerged is different. "The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" is an Aesop fable. Maybe their Aesop wrote a slightly different story. Maybe they call wolves by another name. (Does a wolf by any other name still howl as loud?) Maybe they just do not have wolves--they have some alternate creature or all the wolves got chased away by biting cats.
On the other hand, Perplex City's world really could have the phrase "wolf in sheep's clothing," and Violet intentionally or accidentally used a different word.

A shark in sea horse's clothing?
wouldn't fit...
A shark in basking shark's clothing?
cumbersome...
A shark in batter.
perfect!
