He said he was working with 3hirty-3hree for this game.

I think "Town of Cubes" refers to City of Domes rather than Perplex City - that would make more sense, given the way it's being done. A name for Perplex City that would make sense would be something like "Puzzle Hamlet", I think, as it follows the same sort of template as the others.

Yeah, I think you're right. Although, honestly, this all seems a little unimportant to me, like background info, y'know? Apparently there's supposed to be some sort of mystery, so, yeah...

Well, we always say that ARGs are becoming more and more centered on an existing group of players.... why not have them be specifically tailored to us?

I must say that this is the... funniest... start to an ARG I've ever seen. Though If he really wanted to do it right he'd IM HKDL.

Yeah, what's up with that? He should know better! I'm not sure if I'll be able to play this game now.

These youngings don't know how to start a game right, the only way to start a game is IMing HKDL >=(

Yeah, last game to try without IMin HKDL was Iris Eye and that didn't last long at all

Opposites

Since a lot of what this Mant1s person is saying seems to be in opposites I'm kinda thinking that that is the way we are supposed to be "reading" his messages. Including the subjects. Could that be where the "mystery" lies?

They are?

Since when?

If "ARGs" in general, as opposed to ARGs by a particular subset of PMs, are actually becoming more tailored to a specific group of players (which I rather doubt, looking over a random selection of recent successful games), that's a problem, not something to be encouraged.

Okay guys, I just had a convo with mant1s. Apearantly this DOES have some sort of involvement with the 'world of M' emails that have been apearing.

nomesseji: hello?
Maniacal Mant1s: Yes?
nomesseji: I've heard some interesting things about you lately. Something about immersive fiction?
Maniacal Mant1s: Ah! Yes. I'm a Doll-Controller
nomesseji: Fantastic!
nomesseji: Are myou working on a project now?
Maniacal Mant1s: Em...yes.
Maniacal Mant1s: Would you like to help?
nomesseji: Oh, I would love to! How can I be of service?
Maniacal Mant1s: Well, what kind of things do you look for in a game?
nomesseji: I look for storyline and interactivity first, thena good looking design.
Maniacal Mant1s: Oh?
nomesseji: Yes. *nods* I think the most important part of immersive fiction is to wrap the players up in the story.
nomesseji: What do you think is the most important part?
Maniacal Mant1s: The same.
Maniacal Mant1s: hmm...
nomesseji: Hmm?
Maniacal Mant1s: PractaMission
Maniacal Mant1s: they've been sending threats to me.
nomesseji: Really? What sort of threats?
Maniacal Mant1s: "Back out or you'll regret it."
nomesseji: They believe you are 'invading their territory' somehow? How have you interatced with Practa?
Maniacal Mant1s: Not really.
nomesseji: Then do you know what prompted the threats?
Maniacal Mant1s: Well....3hirty-3hree WAS bragging about this new game.
nomesseji: Are you a part of 3hirty-3hree?
Maniacal Mant1s: I was hired by them.
nomesseji: To start a new fiction?
Maniacal Mant1s: Yes.
nomesseji: have you been sending out email messages from the world of M?
Maniacal Mant1s: what?

nomesseji: someone has been sending messages from the world of M. I thought perhaps this was part of your new fiction. I am wrong?
Maniacal Mant1s: World of....M?
nomesseji: here, let me show you an example
nomesseji: this is the message I recieved:
nomesseji: The World of M Welcomes You.

Aliens don't exist, if that's what you're thinking.
Maniacal Mant1s: Oh...
Maniacal Mant1s: dear....
Maniacal Mant1s: I was wondering where he dissapeared to.
nomesseji: So, you know something about these?
Maniacal Mant1s: Unfortunately, yes.
Maniacal Mant1s: There was...another DC, went by the name of Mantis.
Maniacal Mant1s: as you can see, I'm Mant1s
Maniacal Mant1s: after his 2nd game, he went nuts.
nomesseji: Nuts? What can you tell me about him?
Maniacal Mant1s: Not much. All I know is he showed up around the same time I did and he had a similar name.
Maniacal Mant1s: That was about a month back when his game melted.
Maniacal Mant1s: He went nuts and dissapeared.
nomesseji: Because his game melted?
Maniacal Mant1s: Apparently.
nomesseji: Talk about taking it hard... And now he's come back, and is sending myserious messgaes?
Maniacal Mant1s: Looks like it.
Maniacal Mant1s: Kinda confusing.
Maniacal Mant1s: ...grr...
Maniacal Mant1s: now I have to deal with the IF community hounding me about it.
nomesseji: Do you think maybe he has resurfaced because your new position? (and are you worried about people confusing the two of you for one another?)
Maniacal Mant1s: Em....perhaps...
Maniacal Mant1s: I'll have to look into it.
nomesseji: Is it just a coincidence that you have such similar names, or do you think he's copying you?
Maniacal Mant1s: Well, I'm guessing it's coincidence.
Maniacal Mant1s: We both surfaced in the IF community around....January, I would say.
Maniacal Mant1s: He was on a different forum than me.
nomesseji: I see. When you say he want nuts, do you mean dangerous crazy, or just lalaland crazy?
Maniacal Mant1s: ...I'm not sure
Maniacal Mant1s: although I would say somewhere in the middle.
nomesseji: Okay. So, can you tell me more about the project you're assigned to right now?
Maniacal Mant1s: Not really.
Maniacal Mant1s: All I'm allowed to say is that it will not only simulate reality, but it will bend it.
Maniacal Mant1s: Ack.
Maniacal Mant1s: I have to run
nomesseji: okay, thank you for you time
nomesseji: good luck
Maniacal Mant1s: thanks
Maniacal Mant1s signed off at 3:14:36 PM.

okay....

Is it safe to say that this Mant1s person is in another reality? If you ask him about other ARGs' (ie., what we are taking to be his opposite meanings) then he knows nothing about them. If you talk about a PM, rather then a DC, he sounds confused. Maybe someone should explain this too him? That what he knows as "this" is, to us, "this"?

I think that is a good guess. Next time I see him, I will try to explain.

A different reality. Maybe, Mantis is the this-world variagtion of that-world mant1s?

From his description, I'd say Mant1s is referring to, well, Mantis, the lead PM of the Project Ashcroft series. PA was awesome, but PA2 melted down. So, according to this dude, he went insane. Awesome.

This is awsome. I was just trying to come up with a way to work an ARG about ARGs (mine idea involved timetravel) so this is exactly what I've been looking for. Yay for self-referential meta!!
