Mantis had told me that Alaranth was a player he shouldn't have trusted, but I read the PA2 thread, and I just don't see what Alaranth did to ruin the game. In fact, Alaranth was party to what most people seemed to consider a very momentous part of the game.

It seems like a large PM breakdown.

Just my two cents. I hope I don't get trouted. I never played PA.

I don't know what Mantis meant by "VERY unreliable," but I'm guessing it could be one of two things:
a) She didn't remember the conversation the two characters had, and that was important.
or
b) She couldn't get a lot of the info off of the disks and stuff she got at the meeting.

To be fair to Alaranth, you can't put that much pressure on someone who isn't even playing the game. I mean, one of the characters just IMed her out of the blue one day because she lived near the airport. It was a miracle she even went! Plus, you really can't expect too many people to be able to use devices that old (cassettes, floppies, etc.).

I'd say, if anywhere, the blame lies with the PMs. Sure, this whole event was huge, but having to trust one player to do so much is really a sign of a poorly planned game. There should have been a way to obtain this information in-game. Although, like he said, it did launch early, I suppose.

And you're right. From everything I've heard, it was just a huge PM breakdown. Whether or not Alaranth had anything to do with it, I dunno. But, apparently, the PMs just kept leaving one by one, until the only one left wasn't even Mantis.

And, knowing Alaranth, I'd have to say that any characterization of her as "untrustworthy" is highly unjust.

Well, I'll be sure to play Mantis's next game so that I can have the honour of being publicly insulted! I don't know about you guys, but I can hardly wait!

Oh, wait a second - yes, yes I can. Rolling Eyes

Flame-Time

Yes...thanks. I know it was really choppy and whatnot. I was testing some things and needed a nice little game to do while I experimented, so people wouldn't know. No, I wasn't trying to be "innovative" or whatever, I was just trying some things. Some worked, some didn't. No, I don't have multiple personalities or whatever.

Oh, and Poke, what's this about screwing over the grassroots community?

I am so glad I was just loosely following this thread.

I guess putting down Alaranth, making a cheap cop-out after the fact, and losing peoples trust all worked.

I would have second what GuyP said. I don't think I will be looking at playing anything by this kid in the near future.

I would like to thank you all for taking this game way too seriously. Honestly, do you think that I find Alaranth unreliable or untrustworthy? Do you seriously think I'm that stupid? If you do, then I don't want you playing my games anyways. The fact that she even considered going makes me grateful. If you people want to take in-game statements so seriously, I have no idea how you go through Art of the Hiest. "OMG THEY STOLE A CAR?!?"

Wow...just...wow.

I don't know why everyone is getting so angry. Mantis was playing a character closely related to himself. This created a confusion. We knew it was a game, but who was Mantis, and who was the character?

In the end, people got angry. In my opinion, this means the game was successful. By meshing the game and reality, albeit in a minor way, and making people react, Mantis did what all PMs set out to do. Sure, it wasn't a 3:00 AM phone call, but it was fresh!

Now, if only this were implemented in a game that was more complete.

*smells angry replies on the horizon* Now I'm kind of glad I wasn't really following this thread either... although I'll say that, as far as "taking in-game statements seriously" goes, most people look to PMs to provide some sort of reliable and consistent (albeit contrived) narrative... this whole thread seems very patched and hit-and-miss.

Honestly the whole time I read it I wasn't even sure if we were meant to consider you a PM... Confused

Edit: Okay I went back and read a lot of what I hadn't read in this thread... I think I was just confused and thought that it was... I don't know. A joke?

Nevermind. *strolls off*

Give the kid a break...he's 14! The game was interesting while it lasted, and now that it's over and he's apoligized for the thing with Alaranth, just give him a break. Yea, not the best way to go about this whole thing, and yes, crappy ending. Still, screwing over the grassroots community? Puhllease! One thread, bad ending, and it wasn't even some big time consuming black hole like Sable and Shuck is turning out to be.
Tj-
Don't get me wrong, ya, the game sucked, I just think PMs should be a bit more safe from repraisal then something like that. Then again, Mantis had to explode all over Poke and Surfer, which was totally uncool.

/me lights some incense and puts on peaceful music.

Caaaaaaalm. We must return serenity to Unfiction. Now, meditate with me.

oooooohhhhmmmmmmmm..........

I know I'm not a mod, but if you want to be pissed at each other, take it to the Private messages. It doesn't contribute to the positive image of the community as a welcoming and mostly polite and understanding place for newcomers...

/end pseudo-modding.

Part of me is glad people got angry. It speaks to a part of ARGs that is rarely tapped, IMHO.
