Depends on the series.
DBZ? No. Inuyasha? No.
But Ghost In the Shell, Hellsing, etc., anything modern or futuristic would be good. I can see an ARG where you hack the Hellsing Agency's computers, but not Capsule Corp's.

Oh yeah, I got that. With a capital H
I think the GITS or Trigun universes would be interesting to do an ARG story in. Personally I would like to see brand new characters/stories in those universes, rather than some trite fan fic continuing the story of the characters in these shows. Think how ilovebees relates to Halo. Same universe, but new characters, plots, settings, locations, etc. The phrase "Master Chief" was said only once in the entire 6+ audio drama from ILB. Get where I'm going? Good. Now getting back on topic, if you wanted your ARG to have that extra layer of "WTF!" (and c'mon, who doesn't? ), go for the biggie....Evangelion. IMHO that universe has plenty of potential.

BRAIN EXPLODE
Seriously, that would be awesome. I only saw the first DVD, though. That first battle scene is insane.

A trigun thing would only be good if it were done right. It would have to relate juuust enough.. Like maybe include the creation of plants. That was a big unanswered question. And the trigun timeline fits nicely with somehting like that present day.

The biggest problem with any fan-ARG is if the thing the ARG is based on is in the future, alternate universe, or past. The only solution I can think of- and the one ILB took- is time travel.

Actually, there have been a couple decent examples of games co-existing in alternate universes/timelines without the need to "Make it Real" so to speak. For example, The Beast supposedly took place hundreds of years into the future. Yet their pages were designed and events happened as if it were concurrent to our time. Similarly, Project Gateway involved a rather fantastic universe with a comic-book feel, that didn't require any special interface into our world.
Even for a futuristic Anime type game, I don't think it would be a huge stretch to expect that a website could be accessed by both ourselves on this level and the characters on the TINAG level. However, by working in a universe that relies on an already abstracted level of realism (ie, animated) you need to be especially careful that your interface doesn't break immersion. IE, if this is the website portal for a futuristic city in a well known anime universe, you not only need to keep in the theme of the story but in the theme of the art design as well. A website from Akira's universe will look a lot different than one from Robotech.

In a sad attemp to resurect this thread...
"Serial Experiments Lain"
Most of the series takes place with the main character on "The Wired". It would make sense for the majority of ARGs I have seen and it one of the same types of story as "Eva". If this actually goes anywhere, I can post links to various Lain sites, etc.

The best website I have found pertaining to lain is here: http://www.cjas.org/~leng/lain.htm
The name of the site is "thought experiment lain". There are many links off his site. Either that or search for reviews, etc. on Google.
