[UPDATE] Sentinel 21 June Mobius Strip is Falling Down

The Sentinel wrote:

Mobius Strip Support Structure Damaged
By FOSTER LIDDELL

A city-mandated annual inspection of the Mobius Strip has turned up cracks in some of the undersea support structures, leading some consumer advocacy groups to fear for the overall safety of the Strip. MDC spokesmen maintain the structure is perfectly sound.

Guy Willamette of the public interest group Civic Safety Watch expressed horror at the finding. "Erosion at the base of the Mobius Strip can result in nothing but tragedy," he said. Willamette suggested that, if left unchecked, the Strip could slide under the water, costing tens of thousands of lives. "MDC simply has to look into this problem and correct it before it's too late," he said.

Bob Mwalme, a senior engineer at MDC, indicated that the company has no plans to look into the cracks for signs of more serious underlying structural damage.

"It's just unconscionable that the MDC are ignoring this issue without even conducting their own engineer's report," fumed Bullets owner Tamara Grady. "If people are afraid for the safety of the Strip, they won't come and they won't spend. ... making a token effort at least to investigate could go a long way toward appeasing public opinion."

Mwalme protested that the cracks are no cause for public alarm. "The structure was designed to withstand the force of the ocean, tremors, and near-apocalyptic weather," he said. These newly-found cracks are "simply expected wear from the seasonal, temperature-related expansion and contraction of the construction materials."

The inspection is part of the Strip's annual due diligence, an integral part of the original construction deal wherein the City Council waived a number of local ordinances to allow the sea-based structure to be built.

Arthritis Rates Drop

The 'Stand Up Tall' public health initiative run by the Office of the Council has been a resounding success, an independent study has found. The program has focused on educating and treating groups most at risk for arthritis, poor bone strength, and other age-intensified skeletal ailments.

Looks like the planning committees in PC are just as dodgy as the ones in the UK, especially wrt developing 'green' sites, cf Northside Development also.

[PURE WILD SPEC] I may just be being overly suspicious but?

Reporter Salk in Coma
It looks, from previous sentinel articles that Pietro Salk was one of their crime reporters. Previously covering the release of the Recon 8 and the Holyoake murder investigations. Perhaps he had stumbled onto something whilst following up the investigations into Aiko Entrescore's arrest and subsequent release and was 'gotten to'? Perhaps this is a case of another application of the fabled neuro-suppressant device? Perhaps Fran Mendling's death was an accident and was only supposed to have been rendered unconscious?

How does that work then? What can you tell people that will stop them getting Arthritis? As I understand it Arthritis is not something you can avoid getting is it? Please tell me if I'm wrong.

Ironic, Arthritis (which causes people to collapse) rates fall, while part of the city collapses.

diet, lifestyle (the right shoes, padded runners in high traffic tile areas, ect) and early identification and preventative care can do a LOT to help avoid arthritis.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Hot Summer Expected

Despite the cool, rainy spring, meteorologists believe that we should expect a particularly hot, dry summer. "Looks like the peak in a ten-year cycle," said Academy researcher Violet Owens. She suggested extra care be taken this year with hydration and skin protection during outdoor activities. (Full text)

I'm a BioChemical Engineer and not a structural engineer but structures and materials are designed with allowances for expansion and contraction. That's why there are often gaps in bridge structures. Now these cracks may not be catastrophic (yet) but if the cracks are "expected wear" then there is obviosuly an expected lifetime if they know cracks are going to start appearing. Logic would seems to state that cracks are going to keep appearing and eventually the structure will be compromised. I guess I'm just trying to say...what kind of way is that to design a critical support structure?

Maybe Nature(s) Trust was secretly behind its construction and purposefully made it faulty so they could one day claim that it was an abomination of the natural order. Wink

In as much as everything fFalls apart eventually ...

I would believe the engenieer fFrom MDC when he says it is in no danger. "Cracks" can mean a lot of things. without really knowing more, we could look at the outer shell of a structure and declare it unsafe, because it is showing some cracks. however, in a large 3-dimensional structure, we need more data about how sound it is. we can use impressive sonic testing equipment and make some good data. but even then, we will have to take into account the water pressing on all sides and radically changing how the whole thing acts.

At some point, without a doubt, it will crumble and fFall into the sea. There's a reason we dont build things like the mobius strip regularly: because they are going to fFall apart. But the engineers who built the thing are probably pretty versed in how it is built and how strong it is. they would have such an immeasurable liability on their hands if the strip fFell into the ocean. If they say it will stand, I believe em.

I dont think nature's trust or most anyone else wants to see a fFew hundred thousand people killed in a massive accident. I doubt they would be in on any such big scheme.

Of course, tomorrow's headlines may tell something very different.

maybe the loss of the cube is resulting in the gradual disintegration of Perplex City?- a bit like the ravens leaving London bridge?
