A Call To Arms

Fellow ARGers,

I need your help.

For those who may have heard before, I spent 10 months last year serving in the Americorps National Civilian Community Corps. Americorps is, essentially, a domestic Peace Corps, with the NCCC being its elite first line of defense. 18-24 years join the program and spend 10 months traveling the country working in a variety of areas of community service from Education to Environmental to Unmet Human Needs to Disaster Releif. My team alone, one of 28 in just my campus (of five campuses nationwide) help thousands of people in my ten months. In the Boys and Girls Clubs we helped youth to get out of trouble and stay out. In Habitat for Humanity, we helped build over 40 houses. In Disaster Releif, we helped people recover from the Hurricanes.

However, President Bush has decided to viciously slash Americorps budget in general, in specific shut down the NCCC entirely. Here is Americorps' official statement.

My friends, we can not stand for this. Americorps fills a vital role in our nation and can not be slashed. There are other, far less important, areas money can be drawn from. I, and all other Americorps Alums and Service-minded people, need your help to win this fight. The Save NCCC website is one place to start. It encourages writing to your senators and congressmen. You can even write to the President himself. I shall be doign all of that. There is also a Petition to be signed.

We, the people who care about our country's future, will not take this lying down. Stand with us. Join the fight.
