Anyone notice that if you hit Alt-E, Alt-U, Alt-I, Alt-N, or Alt-~ it comes up with a small window called "input window" with a single character in it?

Not sure what it means or how it could be helpful but i thought i'd throw it out there.

Umm, OK, can I just make it clear that I am not a programmer or anything, I use computers to do mathmo things, like horrendously boring courseworks and such... BUT, how difficult would it be to set it to mouse control, mouse unmoved = [0,0], mouse and then either the speed of the mouse on the axes, or the position of the mouse on the axes...?

Now that's odd. I know I tried hitting every letter, number, control-everything, shift-everything, and Apple/command everything, but didn't get around to trying the option/alt key.

The input you see is specifically the accent input stuff. For instance, if you launch Text Edit and hit option-E, you get a little black-on-yellow apostrophe (') that then waits for another key press. If you hit a vowel, you'll get an accented version of that vowel. The same thing applies to those other option-key combinations.

Maybe this is a side effect of Java with no text input field? Maybe this is an intended something-or-other, and it's waiting for us to enter a word or phrase?

I have no idea how this programming stuff works, so if this is absolutely wrong let me know, but is it possible that the mazes go up to 8? When i extract the maze.jar file i see a,b,c,d,e, and f. But in a folder it also has g and h.

Also, for you guys making great tools to help us solve this. I think the only real way to find side corridors is to move the ball very slowly, 1 pixel at a time, and after each 1 pixel move, try to go left, and try to go right. It'd be painfully slow, but since you literally need pixel perfect precision i think it's the only way to do it. Imagine how ridiculously hard it'd be by wobbling your laptop around.

OK OK OK Smile 1/ I'm with Brian, I've seen no evidence for the on again off again gates...

2/ I've updated http://www.kallisti.co.uk/Mapper.zip so that it's got a set of "feather/search" buttons. Two for each direction that just nudge the ball a little to search for mid-corridor exits.

Notes.

1/ Be patient, it assumes you'll wait for the ball to come to a standstill, DOESN'T force you to. If you change something while the ball is still moving, it'll probably corrupt your map.

2/ It's got a "unsafe" mode where you can move diagonally. Don't use it Smile If you hit an open space it'll corrupt the map.

Other than that, post your maps once you've done them all Smile

Just out of curiousity, did you *have* to use .NET v2.0.50215? I've got a different version (more recent, I think) and MazeControl won't run under it :s

Sorry, basically no I didn't. I'm programming in VB because MS happen to have a freebie beta available, it chose that version of .net. I'll download the one from windowsupdate and see if that fixes dependencies...

tomorrow... Smile

Oh, and the pixel by pixel idea, not sure it'll work, I struggle to get it to move the ball that precisely at all in code. For what it's worth, my app allows you to hit the ball in a diagonal direction for 1ms followed by a stop command....

One thing worth noticing is that it appears as if ALL squares are used as either part of the 1 unit width wall, or a moveable space. the wall never gets thicker.

maze

just a thought, does the maze puzzle relate in any way to the maze we saw on the postcard?

I discovered something interesting on the feedback port. Check out this dump of the output upon reaching the end of the level:

The first couple of 20's are the result of my movements. The 50 is the result of reaching the exit. This, instead of being followed by two zeros is followed by a zero and 17. The 17 tells you the length of the string following (in this case, the "win message" of maze 1.) I am not sure what the 10 is, but it's either the end of the first level or start of the next.

How exactly do i view the output? I am on Mac OS X Tiger. I tried to telnet to localhost with port 5398, but it just gives me some error. I'm sure I probably just have the syntax wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

I have yet another new version of my controller app for those interested.

I added mapping; the map currently has a max size of 275x275( which I hope is big enough).

There are 4 modes of operation:
Normal = roll to you hit a wall.
Fast = like normal but at twice the speed.
Step = roll to the next square.
Fine = moves the ball a few pixels. This is very slight and so sometimes it doesn't register; just repeat as necessary( check the highlight on the ball for confirmation in those cases where you may be next to a wall - you'll see it jiggle).

Also, all data sent and received is indicated.

As mentioned in this thread the Sentinel announced today that Salk has now passed away. Does this mean he woke up again?

Latest updates from my app.. (http://www.kallisti.co.uk/Mapper.zip)

So... Now you can do the following.

1/ Place the ball manually (left click the map)
2/ Blank off a square manually (right click the map)
3/ Save the current map
4/ Re-load the current map
5/ View messages that come in at the end of levels
6/ move at a speed of 15 in any direction for one square
7/ move at a speed of 15 in any direction till you hit a wall
8/ move at a speed of 15 in any direction for a set number of milliseconds

Any questions, ask here..

Everyone is starting maze #6 at the top left of a map, they can be at LEAST 60x60, and i've got a feeling the exit is on the bottom right. It's reasonable to assume that no-one simply stumbling around the map would have reached that point manually.

My maze is at least 60X80.

Er, call me computer illiterate if you will, but is there a really, really easy way to get this running in Win XP? Like converting it to an .exe file or whatever?
