Just for completeness, heres the autoresponse:

Thank you for writing to me in this difficult time. My physician says I
should not be exerting myself to respond to this overwhelming flood of
support from our friends and neighbours, but know that I am comforted by
your thoughts for Pietro and I in our time of trouble.

Regards, Sylvia Salk

i've just updated the wiki with a fair bit of tonights finds, let me know (or better still, change it yourself) if you see any glaring mistakes or ommissions or want to tidy it up to something that doesnt look so much like it was typed at 5am :s

http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/index.php/Pietros_maze

http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/index.php/Salklogs.doc

-edit: since im not sure its been explicitly explained yet, so this is how we got them (spoilered to be on the safe side)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
bri noticed that sentences in the spoilerized message we were (possibly) supposed to find by going through the maze to the end, and also the five messages we got from levels 1-5, corresponded to directory names with a hidden file on the salkfamily.com site. every single one of them. lots of files. some password protected, one broke (for now). the log transcripts on the wiki are a collection of the ones we can see so far, put into the correct order.
bri made a handy page of link here but you'll have to type in yourself for the first five sentences.

loads of stuff in there to talk about, but id guess the best place for discussion/spec of either the messages or the contents of the log files would be over in the general thread? its still a controversial topic as to whether we should be getting this information already though so beware :s some people may not wanna know.

as already mentioned in the other thread, we still have stuff to work on! there's 4 passworded files that need breaking into for a start.

also, cos i dont want it to get lost since we havent actually *done* the mazes,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

pietro mentions in the message about the heart of the maze being a room. possibly something to do with the closed off areas simon gave us the co ordinates to? i've done a small (and highly innacurate) diagram of roughly how the shape changes over the course of the 88 or so mazes scattered through the 900 we were (possibly) supposed to solve. not sure what it means but dont want it to be bypassed in case its important.

As i have said in IRC a few times now, this surely cannot have been done by an auto mapper:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Using an estimate, it could take as little as 1 hour to traverse the 100x100 part of the level 6 maze, so even if we were very lucky, 2 hours to traverse a 200x200 maze (i know that it's 4 times the area, but we won't necessarily have to traverse the whole maze every time, I'm making a bit of an under estimation there, bear with me). There are about 1000 levels, so 2000 hours total. 2000/24 = 83, which is coming up on 2.5 months. That is an underestimate as said before.
Dependent on the probability of an unsolvable maze, this time could push up into decades... Surely that's not how we were meant to do it?!

So, err, yeah... I'm confuddled.

Jeb

Dear Jack,

This is Sylvia's brother, Adam, here. As you can surely understand,
Sylvia is very distressed right now, so I am handling all of her
correspondence. Thank you for your email, we've found it very
enlightening. I've been working on the maze since Pietro made it, and
I'm amazed you managed to solve it so quickly.

Even with spending nearly all of my time on it, I have only been able
to solve a few dozen of the levels. Since level 7 is picked randomly
from levels 7 to 1000+ (as it turns out - the highest one I got was
912), the fragments of text I gained at the end of each level were
scattered widely and I wasn't able to make any sense of it, although I
did guess that they were parts of a larger message.

Did you and Simon and BirEnigma and presumably many other people
collaborate together to 'fill in' the different levels of the maze and
derive the full text from that? If so, I am profoundly touched that so
many people have worked hard to unravel this mystery, and I will let
Sylvia know about this and the text of the full message. I'm sure she
will appreciate knowing Pietro's last message, however strange it may
be.

Again, thank you. I will not be able to keep in touch for some time
since I must attend to the funeral preparations and other affairs.

Yours,

Adam Cachin

So it was possible to solve without brute force after all:

So level 7 was a random level (with a random piece of the message), and we would have been able to piece together the message bit by bit (like the 333 letters), had we stuck at it for another few days (assuming several dozen people working on it). Oh dear Sad

edit: oopsie, ignore the 2nd one

Just eeking a little bit more out of this.....

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I suspect what I've found is the symbol that's talked about in the various conversations, but you may guess differently.. Two things then..

1/ The program which draws (in x,y and in y,z fact fans) the "empty" part of the maze that has been spoken of. (.net required, anyone wanna point me to a good wysiwyg java editor?) http://www.kallisti.co.uk/salksymbol.exe

2/ The output of that program. http://www.kallisti.co.uk/salksymbol.gif

right, i don't see why Brian gets fingered (unless of course the work he did after the solve) but I guess its up to Simon to decide what he wants to tell Adam. I suppose we could discuss it, but when it gets down to it, Simon register as a user and tell us what happens Smile

Only (moot) point about this is that there's a bit of text in one of the java's saying, "Left click = up one maze, right click = down one maze" - so I GUESS there's some way of level hopping built in.. Someone who can be bothered to decompile a defunct app can play all they like Smile

SteveC ^^

So it looks like lv 7 was a random one from levels 7-1005
