[SOLVED] /Heart & /Mind

I'm posting this in the hope that those who weren't in the #heist chat room yesterday afternoon/evening can get caught up somewhat and realize that there is still work to do - the more minds working on this the better.

So, from Virgil's rant yesterday and Scapegoat's post over on the StolenA3.com forum we know that we still haven't "finished" gaining access to all of the directories within Virgil's site.

Virgil states:
Quote:
committing serious errors of the heart and mind

which led someone (I'm not sure who as I wasn't on chat at the time) to disover that there are two password protected directories other than those listed on the evil cube wiki, that are unsolved.

The are:
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/heart
and
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/mind

I know that xnbomb, as I did, is focusing back on the cube as the usernames and passwords for the other directories that led to the_future all came from there.

Some others on chat thought that Virgil's statement regarding serious errors indicated that the passwords might have something to do with the error messages/time line puzzle. Alc over on stolena3 has started doing a good wrap up of insights/spec derived from Virgil's gameography that also might be related.

Finally, Scapegoat http://forum.stolena3.com/index.php?showtopic=143 proposes a trade in which we find the passwords to two hidden directories and gives us a link to a cutscene from Nisha Chronicles vol. 1. The link to the cutscene (of rather poor quality for what is supposedly a groundbreaking game) http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/dev/approval/russian_mission_cutscene_take196.mov is password protected, username: heart password: mind. Scapegoat promises more goodies if we can gain access to the /heart /mind directories of vkok.com.

Possible passwords are spec'd to be in the following places:
evil cube (aforementioned)
error codes (aforementioned)
gameography
or the Rants due to SG's statement:
Quote:
It (the above cutscene link) has a username and password. Every TatumSerf knew it because Mr. Psycho ranted about it all the time

Anyway, I hope that this gets the gears turning.

From the latest in that thread:

BTW, I think I'm close to figuring out another secret that the King of Krapola keeps from Mr. Lead Lapdog. Who'd have thought that Virgil's dark place was literal. Where'd he hide the key, Mr. Lead Afterthought?

In the event that 'goat gave us the username and password for the missing folders in the text of his messages. I pulled all the >5 char strings out of the SA3 thread. There are some interesting words in there for things to try for the u/p combo. I haven't tried any of them yet.

Johnny5 figured out the username/password for the mind directory and posted it over on the stolen a3 forums here:

http://forum.stolena3.com/index.php?showtopic=143&st=0&#entry1033

It looks like Scapegoat pointed the way by cluing us in on the screencap from 1987's memory effect.

That leaves us with:

http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/heart
and
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/darkplace

I think there's a fourth one, since I think there are four pieces of torn paper that make one message (at least from the quarter of torn paper that's been found so far).

Solve for /heart

Johnny5 had requested a hint from Scapegoat:

Quote:
Scape I believe this is killing me
now the smile's run away from my face.
well I'm sure that I could get those access codes
if you could just give me a taste...

of what on Earth I'm looking for.

I've been through reams of Virgilitude and there're just too many words that fit the clue's we've uncovered. You mentioned that you had an idea for one of them, and I'm sure that we've all had the same idea, so I'll show you mine and hope I'm not caught out.
For the "rusted loss" clue, i've been hitting all over Naoko, beloved, wife, accident, caraccident, death, blood, bleedtodeath, etc. and for the new beginnings clue, i've been all over Nisha, rebirth, conception, and any host of words related to that infernal lame excuse for a game, but the combination eludes me.
So, help me out, what is the one you're pretty sure of? and do you think it's the username or password?
I feel like I'm out standing in a field, turning over stones, without even a "clever" or an "almost" to clue me.

Help!
--j5--

(apologies to Mr. Joel for butchering his song)

... and received a reply:

Quote:
I'm working on a death and rebirth theme, myself. I've got myself convinced that the first date is Naoko biting it, so the word should be "death". I just can't figure out what the password would be, definitely about Nisha. I keep trying to think of what Virgil would repeat about Nisha. Gotta be some kind of rebirth thing, or his obsession with her.

Oh, and I'm assuming these fit into the /heart/ directory, don't you?

... so we searched and searched for things Virgil had said about Nisha... in LRR emails, voicemails, etc; on VKOC... everyone had decided to give it a rest and start working on the other SD6 puzzles - but I felt like I was on the verge... that the answer was RIGHT THERE...

... so back to VKOC for me, back to where Virgil reveals his deepest thoughts... /my_future...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
... lo and behold, the first (and only) sentence in the second paragraph of /the_future/her/index.html - "Nisha is my future"

... I tried it... death/future...

AND IT WORKED!!!!!

WOOOOOOO!!!!

Yeah, I'm happy! This is my FIRST SOLVE since the friggin' BEAST! heehee!

So, this reveals what appears to be the top half of the note (perhaps the bottom half is in /darkplace?):

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Why do you hide yourself in a place as
dark as you do? Hide your secrets there
instead, the errors of the heart and
mind that must not consume you.

WARNING-Sleep deprivation area!

Don't start watching this flash at 3am.
It's 4am now and I had to stop it short.

Awesome work miss s and celina.
Where to start?
Is this the end of Virgil's site?

Just an update.....after good work by catherwood

edit: url removed at cather's request. I'll try find some alternate place for these pictures - Rowan

edit: http://www.wonderweasels.org/heist/darkplace/ Right now this is a very rough copy of the pictures. I just kinda threw them up there to get them up. I'll try to arrange them better and also get the mp3s up. - Rowan

edit: http://www.wonderweasels.org/heist/darkplace/ Ok, stuff should be more organized now. I'll be updating the site as I acquire new pictures so just be patient (or email me at Rowan.Lambelle at my gmail account and I'll add them when I get home). - Rowan

Rose and Catherwood headed to bed and left me to putter around, I continued looking at the pictures more in depth .... and after a little while of looking I noticed some common themes of the pictures

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1) Teeth
2) Angels and Devils (The skulled figures represent angels and spirits in some south american religions derived from christianity)
3) Hearts or Veins
4) Stars and Starsigns (also Sun=star)
5) Cuircuts
6) Fire

What does this mean....no idea....

geezow, viggie has totally flipped his noodle.

Soo, for those who didn't look at the source yet, the composition of these darkness pages: The flash acts as a mask over the particular image that is loaded behind it, while the mp3 spills out the crazy talk. Catherwood's page (in the previous post) has many of the images that come up randomly.

One pic caught my eye, looked like it might have steg. Here it is, from my temp internet folder.

great work

Thanks cath for doing this. We have lots of things to look at and listen to now!
By the way, it finally occured to me to email Virgil and ask him if he wrote this, etc. I will post a response if I get one.

Such gorgeous work on the images.

And there are so many of them. What's up with the numbers on some of these?

(edited to take out attachments because Rowan has since wrassled all the pics into one corral)

large images

just a suggestion, but with over 40 files involved with this /darkplace/ directory, perhaps they should be uploaded to the wiki?

I know it's convenient to just slap an attachment onto a post here, but the downloads can be really slow to load the page.

Also, could someone please "splat" all URLs pointing to my server? I *think* we can handle the traffic from UF players, but I *REALLY* do not want the URL to be visible for all eternity nor clickable by 'bots.

I wonder... the numbers are all very even (graphically), and all with arrows pointing up. Is it possible these are shipping labels of some sort? "Painting number, this end up"?
