Names of Six 'The Lab' Contestants Leaked
By GAVIN CREWEL

In a shocking revelation, six of the twelve contestants on The Lab have been leaked by show insiders. With only two days left until the start of the eighth season, this upset in an otherwise flawless publicity campaign will be sure to irk Fraction Media, producers of the highly popular show.

The six contestants revealed are:

* Kevin Alten, a proteomics graduate student from Marmalejo College
* Torin Cornforth, a history undergraduate from Perplex City University
* Ryman Gardner, senior PCAG player and visiting fellow at the Academy
* Louise Haydock, a neuroscientist from Perplex City University
* Shakti Sekand, epidemiology researcher at Marmalejo College
* Kalli Shepuse, a theoretical physicist at the Rose Institute

Perhaps the most interesting labmate to be revealed is Ryman Gardner. Gardner will be the first senior PCAG player to enter the Lab, and will bring a degree of celebrity to the show, as well as changing its social dynamics as the other labmates respond to his considerable threat in the frequent puzzle activities and the nomination phase. While Gardner has never won the PCAG tournament -- and some commentators have suggested that at 38, he is unlikely to be a serious contender for the title in future -- he remains a potent force and a respected player, as evidenced by his status at the Academy.

"It's hard to tell how Gardner will influence the game," said Evan Boch, the Sentinel's chief Lab correspondent and last season's winner. "I know that if he'd been in last year, the other labmates would've been seriously worried and perhaps would've moved to nominate him out as soon as possible. However, Gardner is sure to be aware of this and he'll probably try to establish a power base of his own early on, without looking too threatening."

The exact origination of the leak is unknown, but the document obtained by the Sentinel and passed to thousands of fans via key has been digitally signed by the relevant staff at Fraction and its authenticity is unquestionable. Fraction Media has declined to comment on the leak at the time of publication.

All twelve of the contestants are currently staying at an undisclosed location where all communication links with the outside world have been cut, to avoid any possible influence on the audience of the show before it begins. Perplex City will have its first glimpse of the labmates in action when they enter the eighth Lab at 7pm Friday evening.

Joya Skips Nuptials
By JULIUS LOMAN

Pop singer Joya has stunned family, friends, fans, and presumably also her fiancé when she simply failed to show up at her Solstice Day wedding ceremony. "Horace is absolutely in shock, we all are," said best man Colin Blackmooreland. "None of us here knew this was coming."

Joya's publicist, Callie Newell, who was also attending the wedding, said that she received an urgent message on her key just when Joya was supposed to make her appearance. "[The message] was primarily personal and for me," Newell said. "But Joya did want to publicly state that she is in no danger, and she has retired to a secluded residence to consider her life and plan out her next steps. ... She very much apologises for any ill will her actions may have caused."

Witnesses say that when it became clear that Joya was not on the premises, Joya's producer and intended husband, Horace Shockley, took a swing at guest Alejo Jackson, mumbling that Joya's absence was "all [his] fault." Shockley was restrained by the wedding party without further incident, and it appears that nobody was injured.

Neither Shockley nor Jackson were available for comment.

Joya's motives were unclear, and Joya herself could not be located. An anonymous source claiming to be a close friend of the singer's suggested that if Joya is, in fact, pregnant, as recent speculation would have it, then that could be reason for her seemingly sudden case of cold feet. "To even a casual observer, it's as plain as water is wet that she has no real affection for that pompous jerk, Horace," the source said. "I think she realised she couldn't carry through with this sham of a wedding. Good for her, I say."

Fan club president Naomi Woods expressed deep surprise at the news. "I am sure that Joya has very good reasons for her actions, and all will be explained when the time is right," she said.

According to guests, the wedding was scheduled for dusk in the Ascendancy Point atrium. The foiled nuptials had a star-studded guest list, including such luminaries as Randal Tokei, Shia Cowrie, Yuri Forrester, and Mark Ata.

News In Brief
Tigers Skinned

The Tigers persisted with a relentless determination and noble spirit in the Mazy Classic this week, but ultimately suffered defeat at the hands of Colman Ayani's Serpents. "Yes, you could say we're pretty disappointed," said the Tigers' rowing captain, Bamina Mulholland. "We're all heart and no cup." (Full text)

Well, no real surprise at the news of Joya dumping her prospective husband at the alter... Smile

However, slightly confused about the article on "The Lab" and it's reference to the PCAG. They are saying that at 38, Ryman Gardner is getting too old to ever be a contender for the championship, but my understanding was that the games were puzzle based and so age would not be an issue?

THe continued insistence of older people that 'schooldays are the best days of your life' is evidence enough that mental powers decline as one gets older.....

Pirates?

I assume this is another rowing reference, or sport at least. So they do have non mental activities that are highly regarded.

And possibly pirates too, Yarrrrggghhhh!

Yes, there is evidence for sports in Perplex City. Scarlett is a football fan (although it doesn't qualify whether this is Soccer or something like American Football?) and the Sentinel contains another article about rowing. Still not sure what the professional Wheel season refers to? I'm guessing a non-Earth based sport?

Paranoia alert #398 in a series of 702: Collect 'em all...

I was just thinking, having been suitably intrigued by HitsHerMark's latest puzzle over in the other thread, that the reference to Hearts and Cups in that Sports article is oddly...apposite. A clear indication, OOG, that the PMs *are* assiduously lurking on this board and noting what's being discussed, or just a coincidence?

In other news: I quite like the in - joke that their version of 'reality TV' employs the assorted ranks of theoretical physicists and epidomologists, rather than post - operative transsexuals, gay men who are camper than the proverbial row of tents, and people with IQ's in single figures.

Granted, the theoretical physicist could still be a post - operative transsexual and the epidomologist a camp lesbian, but I think you get the point. I still find it utterly dismaying that a 'super advanced' society like Perplex City has to plug this sort of thing, however.

Wheel turns up quite a lot in Perplex City, but it's hard to know exactly what the hell it actually is - it always strikes me that it seems to have more in common with American type sporting set - ups and thus the league set - ups etc. are more reminiscent of American Football, Baseball and so on than they are of, say, well...anything English, really, but that doesn't take us very far. Wheel is clearly highly popular in Perplexian society (and its popularity *does* give the lie to the idea that they are *only* committed to the life of the mind), and the same goes for whatever 'Pyramid' is (I like to think it's Jenga by another name, but there you go). It's even contributed to the vocabulary of the City - there was a nice moment in the article (many moons back) on Alejo Jackson's arrest when someone was heard to use the metaphor 'he tipped his wheel' as a reference to another guy getting Alejo riled. But, other than that, who the hell knows?

I envisaged Wheel as some vast potentially interlocked complex like a clock where players are placed on a variety of ones.

Each are spinning at specific rates whereby the players have to compete to solve puzzles - a sort of Krypton Factor in Motion. If one team completes the puzzle it either makes the other spin faster or connects to other wheels until the end of the game.

Its either that or people on a vahicle of some kind nicknamed wheels zoom around a track with a ball to throw into a net.

Nothing based on any facts - just ideas

i'm thinking the "Wheel" game is something really banal like nascar. in this article sorta paints wheels in a less than perfect light. It's noisy. It's fFairly obnoxious. It attracts lots of people who lots of money almost mindlessly. So I'm picturing something like Drag racing, or people turning left fFor hours on end.

Further evidence! Even the PMs agree that the answer to Hitshermark's riddle should have been hearts, not cups!!!

Only joking, Hitshermark, your puzzle so your solution ; )

by the way .. yes, it's another place of higher education.

So, we have The Academy, The College, The University and now The Institute.

All the Lab contestants are academics, which implies it's a little more cerebral than, ooooooh, Celebrity Love Island (which was brilliant, incidentally). So yeah, why does being old mean you're less able to take part? In our society someone who's 38 can be perfectly capable of keeping themselves in the sort of shape necessary to kick the ass of a 20 year old all up and down the street. PPC seems to have even better health and medical programs so surely it would be even less of a worry, and since the mental faculties of a person shouldn't really be failing when they're that young I don't see how this is an issue.
