[META] Press About the Audi Campaign

I found a few references to this article:

http://www.adfocus.co.za/news/branding1.html

which talks about the A3 and blog advertising

Audi campaign

Sorry to make this a new topic, but I didn't really know where to put it. Has anyone seen this?
http://www.adfocus.co.za/news/branding1.html

The first paragraph of the article reads:

"If all goes according to plan, more than 1m Americans will soon be gripped
by the mystery of the missing car. The hunt for a stolen Audi A3 - a sporty
hatchback that will hit US showrooms in May - will begin next week with
a launch party in New York. At the event, the thriller's first scenes will be shot, with pictures and clues about the theft then distributed on the internet."
the article ends with this: "The Audi campaign chase is about getting bloggers to think of an A3
next time they want to buy a car. Not so different to other ads, after
all. "
Interesting? could this possibly be UNrelated? Not likely, huh?

Edit: Merged into existing topic, already mentioned. -Ehsan

It looks like we've gotten a heads up on the whole thing so we can have some infastructure established before the newbies come.

Also....

Woot. So, we definitely get to affect how things go. Good to keep in mind.

(shouldn't this thread go in Meta?)

I'm really starting to worry there's no game here, that it's just an interactive story, albeit an interesting one.

I mean, it's been going for about a week and we haven't had to do anything. They even gave us the passwords for LRR...another ARG would have made us work for that.

Why is everyone so anxious with this game? "What's the goal of the game?" "Where's the press?" "Why aren't there more players?" "Where's the puzzles?" We've only known about this for a week - give it some time to develop. Most people haven't even had a chance to digest all the material on LRR, yet it seems everywhere I turn people are trying to rush things.

So what if we haven't had any real hardcore puzzling yet. I'd rather have puzzles that fit the game rather than puzzles for puzzles sake. Most of the time passwords for people accounts are really crappy puzzles ("figure out this coded message and you can get into my account") (as an aside, I liked how Urban Hunt dealt with placing a password in their memos as it was definitly plausible). It's more realistic to believe that a software error caused the problem (I'll ignore that fact that no one at LRR has seen the error yet and not fixed it). However, if you are looking for a password puzzle, there are those 3 areas over at VKOC that seem to be screaming for someone to solve them (especially if you read his last Rant).

You also seem to glossing over what could be a huge puzzle - finding the Audi. Granted, it might not be the point of this game, but I'd say there's a 50-50 chance we have to figure out what Ian is up to based on the clues he leaves behind. And I'd classify that as a huge puzzle.

But I am still of the opinion that this game has just started. It's building a base, getting players introduced to Nisha & Ian, letting them absorb all of the different bits of material from their lives. No need to start throwing puzzles in all over the place simply because "that's what an ARG does". (Remember, ILB didn't have puzzles into halfway through the game - and even then it wasn't in the original plan).

You're right, there are things we don't as yet know what to do with.

My thoughts came more from the article than from what we've seen thus far. I know it's early. I just like games where I have to think. Everything seems pretty much handed to us thus far.

And, no, I'm not clamoring for any puzzle at all just for the sake of having a puzzle. If we were handed a stupid puzzle, my complaints would be different.

I agree. We haven't even begun to figure how Virgil fits into all of this.

Sure there are indications that this is an Audi promo and there are indications that it is a movie promo.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The registrar of Virgil's website works with the makers of Blair Witch and indieWIRE

Maybe it's both. Maybe it's neither. This is my first ARG so I'm not going to pontificate or claim to know where this is leading but I do find it interesting.

A blog posting from www.nomadgamer.com asks "Virgil Tatum? Never Heard of Him." Personally, I'm not the type of person who usually glances twice at webads - so it's nice to see that these ads are getting alot of attention, even if people are totally confused at first.

Thank goodness ARGN & UF come up within the top ten in google searches, or people would still be confused Smile

I ran this past Spacebass and he suggested I post it somewhere in the area I am at now as while at http://www.screenhead.com/funny/movies/serenity-trailer-today-at-apple-101114.php looking at the serenity trailer I spotted the Audi banner there that lead to the website at http://www.audiusa.com/shared/a3_microsite/html/a3_microsite_vin.html and said I should post the links since he did not think they were mentioned yet.

If I posted this in the wrong area would a moderator kindly clean it up and move it to the appropriate area as I assume this is part of the campaign referred to in the subject of the thread.

Whee! I finally saw the TV ad on SciFi channel. Thank goodness for Tivo that I had recording SciFi while I watched the Enterprise episode I taped. I didn't have to actually sit there and watch Mr. Murder or whatever was on.

The commerical basically consists of a voiceover while they show pictures of the stolen Audi with the VIN number printed at the bottom. The voiceover goes:

Quote:
Attention:

A series of events has led to the disappearance of a red 2006 Audi A3. If you have any information regarding its location, please contact Audi of America immediately at audiusa.com/A3 or call 1-866-OK-RECOVER.

This car's equipped with:
dual clutch DSG
open sky system
Audi Nav Plus and
2 SD card slots.

Thank you.

Funny enough, the tv ads have the same appearance as the banner ads do on the screenhead site. (And for the people confused in chat - the banner ad is on the screenhead.com site - it's not in the Serenity trailer at all. There are no futuristic Audi AIs coming back to the past to haunt us Very Happy )

I guess I have to word my finds better since I gave the exact link to screenhead.com and even though I said I was there to watch the serenity trailer i said the audi banner ad page I found on that page led me to the other site I gave the link to and made no mention of finding anything in the trailer that got me to the site in the first place other then me being a fan of the show Smile

Thanks for clearing up what I tryed to say with the chat folks who were confused rowan72 Smile I guess I posted it to the right area as it was not moved. I will cut the small talk now.

Trallyus

The second link I posted has 3 web site links to explore as well. I have no idea if they have already been looked at or not, but just in case the link I am referring to is http://www.audiusa.com/shared/a3_microsite/html/a3_microsite_vin.html and once there youll find the 3 links to the sites I am talking about.
