Hivemeet 2006

So after a WONDERFUL weekend in Chicago with a ton of great folk, I suspect a lot of people are interested in having another one next year. And I'm guessing those who couldn't make it this time would love another chance to go.

So why not start organizing it now? Time goes by fast, and I'd rather start early than run out of time at the end.

First things up are date and place. So far we have a couple of suggestions for the place: (some discussed, some just large cities)

Discussed at Hivemeet as possibilities:

Seattle
San Franciso

Other large Cities:

D.C.
NYC
Boston
Atlanta
LA
San Diego
Phoenix
Austin
Dallas
Vancouver
Toronto
Montreal

...any one else have any suggestions? I imagine that the final location will be decided by Condorcet poll, but let's wait until we have enough suggestions to make it worth while.

As for date... well... start throwing out times. It seemed like May worked well for a lot of people, but it might be harder for some of the students to go if they have classes/finals. Might we want to hold it later in the summer? Or possibly over spring break season?

While we were in Chicago, Phaedra pointed out that round trip tickets to Europe are cheap: $300 round trip to Ireland, for example. That's cheaper than my round trip ticket from Atlanta to Chicago. What other travel bargains are lurking out there that would serve us?

Sheer laziness impells me to shill for Toronto. Very Happy Actually, there is a ton of things to do in the city, but it's not terribly centrally located even if it does have a good airport.

A factor in its favour is that thebruce could attend. Smile

-- Steve would be intrigued by a west-coast meet, but isn't sure the ol' bank account could support it.

Next year? Man, it's just too far away for me to even think about it ... I don't even know if I'll still be living in US or if I'll be back in Brazil! Smile I won't say anything about location and dates for a meeting I have no idea if I'll be able to attend ... Not that I wouldn't want to! Cool

Yeah I have no clue where I'll be a year or even 6 months from now. I'd kind of like it to be either out West or in the Pacific NW since those are two areas of the country I've never been to, but overall I have no real opinion.

Handy tip from me to you: putting a meet in your hometown is not laziness. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

Ooo, I've never been south of Memphis. Well, except for Disneyworld, but that doesn't really count.

Lesse. Haven't been to Seattle before, except for a flight connection. Haven't been to Atlanta either, or indeed really anywhere in the southeast (excepting the area around where my grandparents live in Florida).

San Francisco wouldn't be bad either, nor would Toronto, although I'm biased towards Toronto due to the sheer convience of it (assuming we get that ferry back up'n'running).

Lastly, one point to bring up... as I recall, SF was heavily in the running due to 4orty 2wo's location, no?

I totally would like Cincy, seeing how it's my home town, but there ain't no one anywhere near here. I know I could only attend if it was someone in the eastern to middle us though. I will so be there if I can, Atlanta sounds nice, or St Louis, or even Boise, I could totally do that, theres a bunch of you up and around there, right?

Hmm, we weren't going to say anything until we had more of a definite plan (okay, until we were ready to unveil the website Wink ) but plans are underway for a Hivemeet 05.5 in November, in San Francisco.
