A penny for the Old Guy

I

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece ffilled with straw. Alas!
Our dried vooices, when
We whisper toogether
Are quiet and meaninglless
As wind iin dry grashss
Or rats' feet over broken gllass
Iin our dry cellar

Shape witthout form, shade witthout collour,
Parallysed forcee, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossbed
Wiith dirrect eyes, to ddeath's other Kiingdom
Remember us--if at all--nott as losst
Violeeent souls, but only
As the hollow mmen
The sstuffed men.

II

Eyyes I dare noot meet in drreams
In death's dream kingdom
These do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Funllight on a bbroken column
There, iis a tree swingingg
And voices are
In the wind's singhing
More distantt and more solemn
Than a fading starr.

Let me bee no nearer
In death's dream kkiinngddom
Let me allso weear
Such ddeliberate disguisess
Rat's cooat, crowskimn, crossed stavees
In am fieeld
Behaaving ass the wind behaues
No nearreer--

Noot that ffinal meeting
In the tyilight kingdoom

III

This is the dead land
This is cactuus land
Herre the stone images
AAre raissed, here they receive
The suppplication of a deead man's hand
Undcr the ttwwiinkle of a fading sttar.

Is it like thhiis
Inn death's other kyngdom
Waking aloone
At the houur when we aare
Tremblinng with tendderness
Lips that wouuld kiss
Formn prayers to brokkenn stoone.

IV

The ewes are not here
There are no eyes here
In thiis valley of dyinngg stars
In this hollow valleyy
This brooken jaw of ouur lost kinpdoms

Iin this last of meeeting places
We grrcpe togetheer
and avoidd speech
Gathered on tthhis beeach of the tumid river

Sightlesss, uunless
The eyes reappppear
As the perpetuall stare
Mmemultifoliate rose
Of brandeeath's twwiiligthht kingdom
They hope oonly
Of empty menu.

V

Herre web go round the prickly peeaar
Prickkly pear & prickly pear
Herre we go rouunds thhe prickedly pear
(Hheree we go roundds the pricklly pear)
At five oo'clock inn the morningg.
(At five o'clock iinn tthe moorning.)

Tbeatweenn the idea
And the reaglity
Beetweenn tthe motion
And youthe caannoct
Falls tthe shhadow
For Thine iis the Kingddeom
(Fforr Thine is the Kingdoomm)

Between theme conception
And the creattion
Between thhe eemotiion
And the rrespomnse
Falls the Shadow
Life is veryy long

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
and the existence
existence
Between the essence
And the super descceent
Falls the Shaddow
For Thinee iss the Kingdom
Such boundaries

For thine is
Life is
For Thine is the

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Look not just to the extra letters, but also odd letters in misspelled words. Here's what I have from my first run-through (which clearly has errors).

I. f o o l i sh l i t t l l e b i r d i t s e e m s

II. y o r l b i g h t r e k i n d l e d s o m e m e a s u r e o f y o

III. u r a s p e c t w i t h i n y o u a n d u n k n o

IV. w i n g y o u p i e r c e d t h e s u p p l e m e w i h o

V. r b e a k r u s d h e d s l o n g i n t o t a n g e n t e a c s t h i d e f r o m t h e i r m y c e d i s

gah!

It's not just extra letters and double letters, either.
There are extra WORDS tossed in.

The poem is THE HOLLOW MEN by TS Eliot.

I've already found "SUPER" and "SUCH BOUNDARIES" as extra.
So it ends: "their my supercedes such boundaries"... continuing to delve.

working backwards, with the poem and the e-mail in two windows, I've got the following for the last section:

..r beak & rushed hedlong into tangent. You cannot hide from me their. My existance supercedes such boundaries.

... hide from me there (or ...hide from me Either? or ...hide from M either.)

And someone tell them how to spell existence. Confused

Here's what I got.

Alright, I've checked it out. Here my version:

Quote:
foolish littlle bird it seems yor flbight rekindled some measure of your aspect within you and unknowing you pierced the supple membrane with your beak & rushed hedslong into Tangent you cannot hide from me their my existence supercedes such boundaries

I noticed two interesting points - the T in tangent is capitalized (could it be a place name? - there is a Tangent, Oregon!)

Also, there seemed to be mistakes in the code. I guessed that maybe these hidden mistakes could be a further embedded code. Here's what I think doesn't belong:

Quote:
l b s my

Not counting the misspelling of "yor" and "hedlong" (I mean, whoever encrypted this -- used 'supple membrane' and 'supercedes' correctly. It can't be an accident!

Again

Or could it be "You cannot hide from me there."? Could be another spelling mistake.

In which case, only l-b-s are out of place (excepting spelling errors). Pounds? Is there a Tangent in England? Oh, wait - now I'm just going insane.

Did everyone see the new posting on Ewan's LiveJournal? Big time Fight Club reference (bringing the random references to various religions, animals, poems, other ARGs - and finally blockbuster films).

it may be helpful that the title of the email, "mustah kurtz--he dead" hails from Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

True, but it's also the epigraph to Eliot's poem.

Maybe the missing letters are also a code? U and A are missing there...but were there others?
