[UPDATE] www.salkfamily.com - 5th July 2005 - A Eulogy for P

Quote:

A Eulogy for Pietro Salk

As Spoken by Sister Golda Flynnt, 28 June 268

We are here today to mourn the passing of a great light to our city, Pietro Vincent Salk, taken away from us at the untimely age of thirty-seven.

As a child, his parents tell me that Pietro showed no sign that he would grow to be a man of words. He was a daredevil and a tinkerer. His mother, Rowena, says that it seems like he was grounded from the time he turned nine until he was twelve, because of his never-ending gift for mischief. As he grew into a man, he turned to championing the weak, be that the abandoned kitten he brought home when he was seventeen, or the victims of a key fraud ring he helped to end, just last year.

I had the honour to know him myself for a time, and it was clear that Pietro was a passionate man. He had a zeal for truth and for justice, and this passion guided him to his career as a journalist for the Perplex City Sentinel. From his first article, a freelance exposé on the underground cognitive enhancement market at the Academy, which he researched thoroughly during his stint on the substance abuse committee during his own gaming year, he strove to make the world safer and fairer for everybody. In time, he grew to be one of the Sentinel's finest reporters. He would leave no mystery unsolved, no end hanging loose, all in the pursuit of truth.

Pietro loved life, and most of all he loved his wife, Sylvia. They were married in 260 after only a six-month courtship, but everyone who saw them together knew it was right. They built a beautiful home together on Eclipse Approach, where friends were always welcome. He worked hard at his garden, cultivating the particular flowers that Sylvia so loves, and the smell of the fresh rosemary bread she bought just for him always filled their house. Their marriage was truly a fusing of like minds into a greater whole.

All of us who knew Pietro - whether as family, friends, colleagues, or simply through his work at the Sentinel - are now the poorer for his loss. Join with me now in pledging our love and support to those who will feel this loss the most deeply; his wife, his parents, and his brother and sister. It is our duty as their community to let them know that they are not alone. Share in their grief, to make their burden the lighter.

Peace be with all of you, and with Pietro.

It's like, so close to answering these: http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/index.php/Salk_logs
but not. well that's nice. *sigh* Ok, so here's what i get: they dont age any differently. the pictures of Pietro look like a 37 year old. Also note the use of the PXC dates. It seems to be a religious thing. Anytime religious fFolk come up, the alternate dating system is used. And of course, some good biography. nice.

Aha! Like an annoying street orator with a particular diatribe to peddle, I simply wish to note that this may be more ammunition for my favourite theory of the moment - that Pietro was a well - known 'crusading' journalist, and someone set him up to prevent him from sticking his nose in where it wasn't wanted; that The Advisor just strung him along etc. (or something...).

Anyway, although it seems minor, I'm intrigued as to who masterminded this 'fraud ring' exactly, and where it was operating from. I couldn't help thinking of Holyoke (yet again) when I read it, and that makes me wonder: had Pietro had deeper dealings with that man and/or associates prior to his reportage of Holyoke's death? Did he make a significant enemy somewhere during this investigation? Or is this all a red herring? Intriguing...This doesn't sound, either, like the case TA was praising Pietro for his involvement in, when they began correspondence - I think it's something else...

Oh, and I'm glad to see that the underground cognitive enhancement market is more than just my idle speculation...

Actually, I might be taking rubbish above...but I remain interested in Salk's pre - Advisor career.

In the Salk Logs, we open with a reference to Salk's work in the 'Sasazi Case'. We get references to two names we've never heard of before, Ada Sasazi and Theo Trent. I assumed that this case was not the key fraud thing mentioned in the eulogy. I don't know precisely why, as I suppose it could be. But I felt that titling the former case , the 'Sasazi case' appeared to indicate that it had involved some more personalised indictment than an arrest over key fraud.

We get the implication that Salk helped to prevent Ada from being sent down for a crime she either hadn't committed, or was being set up on, and the logs almost make it sound as if here we have a lover turning evidence on a former partner, or something of the like. Maybe this crime was an entirely domestic one.

But, on the other hand, if the key fraud and this case are one and the same, then we've got some suggestive lines of investigation (should we ever find out that the case was of significance!).

And, equally, am I the only one who notices similarities between this miscarriage of justice and what's going on in the Michael Corolla case? Makes you wonder if there's something deeper than just judicial corruption going on.

FWIW, I picked up on Salk's t-shirt and tried various permutations of Mimasan Maze as the place where Salk and his wife met. No joy Sad

had a quick look for flowers that were 'particular'...things with Latin names like particularia, just in case it was a not so oblique reference to this...inevitably, nada.

Ah, but we did get to know that he liked the smell of rosemary flavoured bread Smile

As to Sylvia's T - Shirt, what the hell *is* that??

I thought it looked like a depiction of a bridge (maybe a Perplexian landmark) reflected in some water...but it could be the local equivalent of the yin - yang or whatever...

Well, unless it's a band logo, or something...we know that the Salks shared a love of music !!

How common is it for members of the Brotherhood to say something at a funeral. Are they like our clergy? If not would that mean the Salk's are members?

Yeah, but some clever chap just figured out another password (Dad's name = Vincent), and that page was up... which makes it weird that some would be done, and others not.

They work to unlock that directory, there just isn't a file called index.html in it. If there's a file with any other name, the directory is unlocked and we could get it, but we don't know what the file name is.

So, either there's nothing in the directory to find yet (since they haven't OFFICIALLY given us the answer yet), or it's a partial solve and we need to figure out what the file we need is named.

To be honest (and I may just be showing my technical illiteracy here), I tried inputting 'Username: Pietro' and 'Password:Vincent' into the input box, just to see what it looked like in the original, and it wouldn't work. It might be that my browser has trouble handling the data. So, I guess we've got to be careful of that - the program not responding even *if* the answer's correct!
