[UPDATE][SENTINEL] July 11: Earth Idioms Invading PPC

Quote:
Kohler: Earth Idioms Invading Perplex City
By FOSTER LIDDELL
In her new book, 'Earth is a Noun' author and Marmalejo College sociologist Ernestine Kohler examines the profound effect that Earth culture has had on language, fashion, and societal norms over the last few decades. "It's like the city early on made a value judgement that all things of Earth were desirable, without a more logical review regarding how this would negatively change our own world," Kohler wrote in the preface of the book.

One group she sees particularly under bombardment are the under-30 crowd. "These children have been exposed to Earth culture their entire lives," she said in an interview with the Sentinel. "Their knowledge regarding the traditions and values [of Perplex City] is simply miniscule." She pointed to a growing economic reliance on the solstice holidays as gift-giving events. "This is a very Earth-driven change," Kohler said. Traditionally, these holidays are a time for small hand-made or silly gifts, and not the retail blow-out we see today.

Kohler also points to the way today's youth parrot Earth slang and idioms rather than inventing their own. "We all know our true culture puts a tremendous value on creativity and innovation," she said. "That makes it even more a tragedy that our children are enslaved by the power of words from another world, and their natural tendencies have been thoroughly inhibited."

The book lampoons the final result of this parroting, from fads such as keys modified to look like Earth tech, to the hunger for traditional Earth media, to the phenomenal popularity of such Earth-replica stores as Earthworks or Hannigan's. Kohler suggests that the city might strongly benefit from ceasing all study of the Earth and mothballing all of the body of research performed upon Earth-related topics.

The book is Kohler's first venture into the hot topic of Earthology. Her previous works, including 'Faces of the Cube: The Silent Voices of Secular Cubism,' have primarily addressed the influence of religion on the people and institutions of Perplex City.

'Earth is a Noun' is available from Seaside Press with a recommended retail price of PCL180.

Several *decades* worth of contact - that's intriguing. As far as we known, Coralhouse and her team were working on Earth related studies in (our time) the 1970's. Do we then assume that more widespread knowledge of Earth developed over the next couple of decades, with the fad for all things Earth peaking in recent memory?

Children eh? Another argument for massively extended lifespans? Even a vindictive old bastard like me would hesitate before calling a 16 year old a child, let alone a 30year old. If people in PPC look at age this way, middle age would be around the 90 year mark and old age somewhere in the region of 150!
Coralhouse was struck down in her prime!

No body let on to them our age... they'd think half of us were toddlers!

I think the quote was meant to imply that everyone under-30 had been exposed to the Earth culture thang during their childhood... in a slightly clumsy way.
