Bumping thread as MindCandy has changed the scanning guidelines for the Puzzle Cards:

No high-resolution scanning will be allowed AT ALL - no enlargements, no blow-ups of smaller areas, nada.

I don't see any mention of text transcription in the new guidelines. Do we know if that's still allowed? Hope so.

I understand the legal concerns, but this is definitely going to make solving some of the cards much more difficult. Especially the more rare ones. Heck, the piano one would have been nearly impossible without the numbers. Darned lawyers Smile

EDIT: I emailed mindcandy for clarification on the transcription question. Since the guidelines are specifically talking about graphical reproductions, I'm hoping transcription is still fine.

EDIT: Got a reply

Yes, you can transcribe the cards.

Well that new rule effectively ends the card puzzles for me. Some of them are just impossible to solve at 60 dpi. For example "The entertainer" at 60dpi we couldn't even see that the black dots had numbers on them.

If reproduction was their concern than they should allow us to digitally photograph the cards at an angle so that they can't clearly be reproduced.

I don't think MC is worried about people reproducing them, I think they are worried about not enough people buying them in the first place.

At 60dpi the cards are totally unreadable. At this resolution even the card number is hard to make out. Surley a res or 200 or so would be useless to copy cats. Me thinks they are worried that the cards will not sell so many if we can see them on here. I think their worries are however, unfounded.
At a mere £2.50 for six I think they're pretty reasonably priced.
What was my point again....

I wouldn't call them "totally unreadable." After all, the resolution of your monitor and video card (unless you have access to something most consumers don't have) is only 72dpi. 200 is a bit excessive, considering most cheap printers start in the 150 to 300dpi range and go up from there. Sure, it would be nice--REALLY nice--to have something a little more high-res, but at 4 inches by 6 inches, the scan ends up being about 240 x 360 pixels. When you consider that most cards to date have been more focused on the text itself and not the imagery, it doesn't seem to matter so much. To date, I think the only card that has been complex enough to absolutely require a higher-res scan is New Notation. The rest of the cards have been okay with a low-res scan to give a general feel for the card followed by a transcription of the text.

To anyone posting card scans, can you please also transcribe any text from the back of the card that can't be easily read from your scans? Some of the map pieces have information boxes on them that could contain useful information we may need later.

could the next moderator that sees this slap some solve tags onto the thread titles? that would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm a little bit hesitant to put "solved" on anything except maybe the easy/red cards. Some of them are pretty complex and have answers that may be multiple layers deep. For instance, #112:Three Little Words, do we stop once we have all of the languages down, or is there a next step? I think until we have a leaderboard (which will grant points for correct answers, thereby proving/disproving the "solved" status), it might not be so great to just start marking things arbitrarily as solved.

After short deliberation, we decided to start labeling solved puzzles with [SOLVED], then, once we verify that the solution is correct, we'll add a [VERIFIED] tag to them. This is mainly so that people who are looking for open puzzles wouldn't have to waste time wading through the solved stuff, and could instead easily locate puzzles in progress. Note to the original posters: you can change those tags by editing your post.

Someone in another thread mentioned posting images in PNG. Since JPG is a lossy compression algorithm and PNG isn't, this sounds like a great idea to me.

The files will be a bit larger, but this way we can get the most out of our 60dpi.

This obviously applies mostly to cards that have small details which are not easily transcribed. Can one of the moderators add this as a suggestion to the top post of this thread?

Thanks!

At the very least, if you're going to use JPEG, please try to bump up the quality level. By default, a lot of image programs save JPEGs at something like 60% quality, which is pretty bad. While 100% will generate gigantic files, 90 is close enough that it is usually indistinguishable from 100% to the human eye and still gives an okay amount of compression.

But yes, I agree that PNG files are probably the best format to use going forward.

can i just request that people uploading new cards please include an image, or at the very least a link to an image in their post please. I understand that people might not be able to scan them in, but most of them are up on the card catalog anyway, either direct link to the page or do an img tag and paste

http://www.perplexcitycardcatalog.com/144/image.png

where the 144 would be replaced by whatever number card you have.
however, the card catalog doesn't seem to have all of them, so please check first and if it doesnt then it would be really cool if you could try and scan it in or even take a digital picture of it. especially the card backs because as far as i know we cant nick those off the ppc website ;) and it would be nice to have our map wouldnt it?

if we are going to help you solve your cards, its the least you can do ;)

rach =)

Given what I've seen so far in this wave, and what happened with wave 3, I feel the need to draw attention to this thread.

Please take the time to read it before posting new threads about cards, as it makes things easier if everyone follows the same guidelines.

To recap:
- Transcribe or describe as much as you can.
- If you have access to a scanner, post scans of both sides (unless the back is a generic "instructions" one) at Mind Candy's maximum allowed resolution of 60dpi (about 300x450).
- Also mention any playing card symbols, strange numbers, etc. that don't relate to the actual puzzle.

If you come across a thread that's missing any of this information, and you are able to provide it, please do.

This one looks like mind boggling. But then, I just need to think positively in order for me to solve this successfully,.
