there's an error on line 21 of your doc Danives, but otherwise that may prove helpful. I can't see any pattern to the numbers either though.

Just a thought but it might be worth looking at if only briefly. What if the deck is face down that would mean the code is backwards and the 1st two letters would be lu ll pz ky and so on.

Another thing occoured to me. Somewhere I heard that playing cards originated in China, if this is the case do the cards have different names or suits in china. This would make sense as it links into the "made in china" ref on the card.

or is my brain fried?

Well, I have tried putting the deck in various orders, but keep comming back to the fact thta the deck was in original order. My mate has pointed out that some of the letters are related to roman numerals. Maybe something to do with that? Sorry 4 bad spelling, trying to figure this out when drunk, lol!

I can't remember all the letters used for Roman numerals, but I'm pretty sure there's loads of pairs without any. I think this maybe just comes down to any ciphers using the alphabet would have them in, but could be wrong?

Completely with you on this point. It's a sealed deck according to the picture and the part in the text about it being untouched except for the joker confirms it.

but do we initially look at the cards face up or face down. This might have alot to do with the order of the deck i.e.

Ace to king four times and jokers at the end

or

Jokers 1st and then king to ace four times.

Still none of this helps with the code so.... Sad

Sorry, I don't fully agree with this. From my understanding of the solitaire cipher, these are the steps to take to do a decode:

1. Take default ordered deck with 2 jokers (one marked)
2. Key the deck (put it in some agreed order - this can be done using a pass phrase)
3. Do the decode

We start off with a default deck and a marked joker so step 1 is achieved. To do step 2 we either need a pass phrase or something that specifies a deck order. This MUST be what the middle 108 chars of the code are for. It's too much of a co-incidence.

The sticking point is how do we tell the deck order from those 108 chars. That's where the cunning plan falls flat on it's face........

I was just thinking, maybe we actually have to encrypt the code to get the message, as there is way too little information for us to have to decrypt something.

Just a thought!

no da

Hmm, not a bad thought chichiri, although I think a few of us have tried it before. Im not certain and dnt think its been mentioned before!

You also make a good point padge, and it might be the solitaire cipher from what you said. Yet some of the solitaire ciphers come with the deck in a random order so when you choose a keyword it makes it even more random...or something like that.

I did make a java program to try and attack the soliatire cipher before, but Ive deleted it. What I'll do is try to make it again 2nite and post it up with instructions, so you can all try to brute force solitaire. Then if no results come about in a few days, we'll safely be able to say that its not the solitaire cipher! Cya soon!

Don't know about building one from scratch (cos I'm way too illiterate) but this page has a good explanation of the cipher, and lots of versions of models for encryption/ decryption

http://www.schneier.com/solitaire.html

I've mainly been using the Javascript one.

Yeah cheers Alisdair, but Im currently making one that you can load a dictionary file into, or a list of words, and get the results of each, and also set it so it will look througfh the result for a defined keyword (say DIJNN) and then save that line to a text file. So all you have to do is run it and it will check the output and save all the relevant ones to a text file so you can look through them. The one I made a while ago had some bugs in so I got rid of it, this one should work hopefully, lol!

way out of my league there then, good luck. I'll keep on trying to apply my lack of genius to it...

I'd make the keywrod simple, but clearly an indicator of text. The word "the" might do it; might get a few more extraneous false leads, but it would better ensure finding whatever the result may be. Of course, this is just a recommendation.

In the mean-time...

DAMN YOU, GARNET!!!! Evil or Very Mad

Well I'll see how I'll make it, might be able to put a v simple GUI that takes the cipher text you want to decode, and then you can choose the keyword you want to look for. May take me a little bit longer though. Atm having a bit of difficulty with the keyword search. Shouldn't take me too long though! lol

Have already tried brute forcing with a 200,000 word english dictionary..... Didn't yield any results. That doesn't mean that I don't think it's solitaire cypher, just that it's unlikely that the key will be a simple, single word. I agree with the general concensus that the 108 characters in some way will give us the key, too much of a coincidence that it's 54 pairs of letters.
