But the fun isn't over yet! Check this out. I got this first message after winning (and IMMEDIATELY paying for) the item in question:

Quote:
Would you accept this item at no charge for the purpose of safeguarding it? I have received a number of private offers for the manuscript originating from some "questionable" buyers. This increased interest worries me. I'd like to ensure that this item rests in safe hands.

You're crappin' me! I kind of was thinking something like this was going to happen (I called it!) but I'm still very surprised/shocked/etc. So I write back:

Quote:
MP -

Wow! I would be honored to be the one to keep the document safe, free of charge. Umm, there's just one thing... I've already paid you on PayPal... Of course, you're more than welcome to refund my money, if you'd like. I wouldn't argue that! Either way, I'm very happy to add this document to my now growing collection of all things Rambaldi. Please let me know what you wish to do from here. Thank you.

To which he says:

Quote:
Wyeth tells me that you can cancel the payment on your end? Please go ahead and do so, we never got around to setting up that PayPal thing. He says there should be a "cancel" button. I have your address from the auction and will get the drawing out in the mail within the week.

It was never about the money. I wanted to find someone who could appreciate the historical importance of the document enough to take action on it. You've earned a friend.

MP

I know it's lame and cheesy, but I was really kind of touched. Keep in mind, my suspension of disbelief can work wonders, I tells ya. So I wrote back:

Quote:
MP (and Wyeth) -

Wow, again, I'm very honored by this. I have cancelled the payment on my end (thanks Wyeth!). You know, I was thinking about how lucky you were to be able to visit all those places in Italy and how I probably won't ever get that chance. This document, though, will take me closer than I thought I ever would get, though (as cheesy as that might sound). Thank you again - you're a noble man. You've also earned a friend.

-Conor

So what have we learned? I've probably put myself on the top of the hit list now. Hey, when I do something, I go big or go home. If I'm going to be on a hit list, I'll be on top, dammit! Cool

Thank you, thank you! I think it would have been funny if we knew they were going to just give it away, and we let the bidding get up to some obscene amount of money. Razz Anyway, I shall post again when I get the goods.

Well I got it! The manuscript came in the mail while I was on vacation this past week. It was rolled up in a tube with some tissue paper over it. There appears to be a "watermark" with the <O> towards the top, bit it looks like it's either made by someone scratching a thin layer of paper off, or a white crayon or something. I'll look closer later (still in post-vacation blahs). I don't really see anything else of note at this point in time, but I'll look at it s'more later. Any suggestions on what I should do with it? Smile
