As this has now been running for a couple of hours and still no sign of finishing, I was wondering - what if those fiendish designers included a couple of unprintable characters at the end just to stop this exact type of brute forcing? Not that I want to be negative, just playing devils advocate on this one...

EDIT: Right, 100,000,000 starting from aaaaaaaa came back with nothing..... thoughts, anyone?

Done another couple of runs, 10,000,000 starting from 00000000 and a run of randoms for the same number of trials. Am now doing another run of 100,000,000, starting from ' ' or 2020202020202020 - 8 spaces. Don't think this is working too well, I had dreams of it breaking open almost instantly

I get that, it's just that we finally have a solid lead on how to go about breaking this code, and I'd hoped that it might be relatively easy to crack, especially given the narrowing down to only alphaneumeric characters for the code (probably!). I'll keep plugging away at this and giving it new starting points, will move on to 'bbbbbbbb', 'cccccccc', etc. once this is done.

I've done AAAAAAAA - 10000000 (10 mil)
BBBBBBBB - 10000000 (10 mil)

and I'm doing CCCCCCCC - 100000000 (100 mil)

However I can;t be figged to work out how far throught the Hex code 10 million keys goes so I suppose I'm missing huge chunks of code.

I was assuming that there would be info on the card to do this but my head hurts.

I might try 'fivecows' when this is done.

I'm currently trying fivecows, though it seems far too obvious.

Going back a few posts, I agree with whoever said (can't be ar$ed to see who it was that said it, sorry, typing on a PDA here!!) we should make a PXC 'dictionary' of potential keywords to try out. If anyone has any ideas for words to try, could you please post them here?

I just sent an email to the guys over at distributed.net to ask if they could give me some information on how they designed their Bovine project (the project that cracked the RC5-64). Does anybody know who developed the seti@home application?

If we get enough information on how to design some largescale distrbuted computing cluster we can start working on an app and the serverside scripts to get cracking.

Just checked the Seti@Home website (cheers locqust), and the BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) project sounds really good. Maybe if we're really lucky they could add our decode to their BOINC project?

Well at the very least I can at least find out how they did it.

Had a closer look at BOINC [URL=http://boinc.berkeley.edu/create_project.php]here[/URL] and they're giving you source code and an API to develop your own BOINC application...great stuff!!! I'll email somebody there to confirm that we can use it, then I'll get started on working out how to design the app.

The entire thing is open source so I see no reason why we couldn't hijack it for ourselves

Just spent the last 10 mins updating my seti to this new BOINC system, didnt even realise mine was out of date! Oh well!

Edit: Just been looking at the system and if it works for this card, then we could have it running as a screensaver as well as background app, that'll be fun numbers and letters streaming past your eyes all the time! Matrix anyone?
