Could you try the key 3E CD A1 5E 70 4F B3 1C ? This is the key used to break the DES II challenge by EFF which is related to the cracking DES book (the only book on the distributed.com website that has a five cow rating).

I've been looking at this card for weeks now and everything I've tried results in a dead end, I was using openssl to try and solve but I'm inept with linux and kept screwing it up.

Thanks Malinky... unfortunately no joy here..... but i like your logic with the 5 cow rating... very good... got any other keys that could be derived from that logic... was there an IV with that key?

openssl will only work with 32/anything not 64/ as its only designed like everything to deal with 32bit words... and this is 64bit!!

I've made the decrypter so it now trys all keys and iv's against each other so each new key i add it trys them against everything else... so it will run every key against every iv... so the more we add the more chance we might have at guessing what would take a computer billions of hours to crack!!!! Twisted Evil

Today I remembered that my brother in law said the Thirteenth labour of Herucles (something like that) was to defeat Medusa. I thought I would nip onto the internet and have a look for anything to do with Medusa and decoding. There is a decoding software called Medusa which is mentioned on the website site below

http://www.absolutevision.co.uk/pdfs/Productmarch2004.pdf

Also Bazmadoodah has pointed out a cartoon in Punch today entitled Destroying the Money Lender's Web: or the Thirteenth Labour of Hercules.

Are we looking for something in www.perplexcitybankingcorporation website? He also mentions its worth noting though that the PCBC site requires you to log in to view your account and personalised home page!!

Is it all coincidence?

Can't think of any other codes from the DES II challenge, DES III was 92 2C 68 C4 7A EA DF F2 but I don't think it'll be that.

I'm sure I've seen something that looks like a key earlier in the game, I have vague recollections of trying a hex type key for the PCBC website (in vain). I'm wondering if the message given to Reason when he got the card (better solved sooner than later) means that a code was in one of the game puzzles around this time.

By the way does anyone know what the PCBC website login was, I never found it!

Thanks Malinky... not that one either though!!!

The hex key thing from eairly sounds possible.... see if you can find that.... does anyone out there have it?!?!?

Re: login for the PCBC website... there isnt one... if you look at the source of the page the form doesnt do anything

<form name="form1" method="post" action="">
<input type="text" name="textfield"><br />
<p><b>Keyless Access Code:</b></p>
<input type="text" name="textfield">
<p><input type="submit" name="Submit" value="Login" onClick='alert("This login box is disabled for users from your location")'></p>
</form>

what ever you put in it will always give you the disabled message... and it has no action of where to send the data to... so therefore cant do anything!!! So anything about a login for this might be of use elsewere.... like here!!!

Lillyplop...
I like the whole 13th labour of herucles idea... i'll see what i can find out there.

Checked through my notes, the code I was trying for the bank account was just the postcard puzzle number (22 15 45 48 48 48 46 51 00 50 32 15) so I was barking up the wrong tree with that one.

But could you try BF EC 20 11 70 71 AA 22 (the last set of hex on the bottom of the card). I don't think its that but I'd hate to think we were looking straight at it and not seeing it.

Tried that, and also in reverse, and also the first 8 bytes of the code, also tried the code with that last set with it removed from the cypher (incase it was just tapped on and not part of it!!!) No joy on any of it!!! Confused

as another line of attack I've added a bit into the decrypter to convert words to hex as a key so if anyone has any 8 letter words they think might be possible let me know on here... or messenger or email and i'll run them all!!!

Does this look strangely familiar to anyone? I think Bazmadoodah may have started a new topic on this as he was the one who found it.

By putting the first line of the clue on the card 69 A9 3A FD C5 etc he found this website on Google.

Is this webbie of any use to us?

Ummm very interesting.... i liked the look of this for a bit but then if you check the history it shows that this entry was updated:
SqueakE Vat to E Vat negotiation trace webcacheB11a.cache.pol.co.uk 17 October 2005 8:41 am

and the 17th october (which is strangely my best friends birthday!!) was after this card was released so i think someone has planted this here, so prob not worth too much time ...

My latest is that i've created a chaos theory key generator that is running in my decoder in the backgorund while i get on with other things!!! ... been though around 2 million keys now!! ... well i figure chaos has a better chance than working though all the possible codes....

Yeah.. but no joy... i've actually gone on to make it check against every 8 letter word in the dictionary in both lower and upper cases!!!! ... but i think i might need to find a bigger dictionary to try next!!!!

The Chaos keygen has now gone through around 3 million keys with no joy yet!!! Confused

People have been mentioning Cryptonomicon in relation to the silver cards so I scanned through the book looking for possible 8 letter words for you to try. Some will be in the dictionary.
Schneier is the author of the Solitaire cypher (see Shuffled).
Epiphyte is the name of the corporation.
Pontifex was the working title of the Solitaire sorting system.
Kinakuta is the Brunei like fantasy city.
Arethusa was a code in the book which was keyed by;
Comstock, the name of a general, and mentioned in another card discussion, which I can't trace just now.
Golgotha is a key site located at the end of the book.

Whilst the nature of the 13th labour, ie medusa seems more promising, does this website offer any leads to those who understand these things:
