[SOLVED] #140 - Blue - Mornington Crescent

Text reads:

while riding the subway to the academy one morning i bumped into scarlett, to pass the time we decided to play a quick game of mornington crescent.

i wont insult anyones intelligence but explaining the rules here but needless to say the game is played exactly the same way as the classic game based on the london underground. The only difference is we use stations from perplex city subway system.

scarlett began with the rare and exceedingly risky swaze gambit. her swashbuckling style paid off and i was soon caught in her spiders web of blind alleys and forced plays. The killer blow came on her 6th turn, which guaranteed her safe passage to mornington crescent on the very next move. several other people in the carriage who had been eavesdropping broke into spontaneous applause.

what station did scarlett play on her inspired 6th move?

Scarlett

Lower Mobius
Magine Corner
Trellis Gate
Traveren Square
Milamont Parade
?

Von

North Bay
Candle Place
Schrodinger's Junction
Lyttleton
Dreyer Park

*actually there are a few other subtle differences such as the banning of Dervish Loops and Whisper Conventions in the perplex city variant but these maneuvers are so rare in the modern game as not to be worth mentioning.

A few little in-jokes:

The radio show is presented by Humphrey Lyttleton, ex-jazz trumpeter. He has a station named after him in PPC. Should we tell him?

Mrs. Trellis of North Wales is a recurring unseen character. She also is referenced in the underground system. (I assume it's her)

Just had a quick mess around on the subway map. Doesn't look too helpful as only 2 of Von's stations are on the map (unless I've gone blind!!!)

Must be something to do with names rather than the locations in PC I'm thinking.

Umm, just jumping a little off topic here, that picture doesn't look much like the other Scarlett pictures we've seen... She also appears to have a cat's head on her left breast, and not much on the other... She also appears a bit too dressed up to be doing something in the morning as the card states... Hmm...

Umm, the answer is clearly "mornington crescent" ? Otherwise the game would have continued. Of course, given the dimensional gap I'd guess "mobeus loop" myself. Using the little known heisenberg variation I love so much.

anecdotally, the ad on the subway car, to the right of them, is fFor Whipsmart.

I was thinking Mornington Crescent as the answer too, but:

Quote:
The killer blow came on her 6th turn, which guaranteed her safe passage to mornington crescent on the very next move.

I don't suppose we could just input any station?

If not, my answer (using the Duke of Dresden's reverse-timing bypass, last utilized in 1998, with excellent results) is: Graeme Garden.

The annoying thing is that it's impossible to spot a pattern when we only have a map of the central stations.

I might try and see if there's another map around.

Or do we have everything we need for this puzzle?

It seems to me the wording is a little bit clumsy, just slightly, and SteveC has it right. I really like this card fFor it's duplex brilliance. It brings a cultural thing to the fFront, and makes you look up something with no knowledge whatsoever. That caught me up at fFirst, thinking this was a proper game, and we needed more info. Having never heard the radio show, and not being able the google anything useful saying what the game is, and all. In fFact, however, they are asking "what is the winning move in a game where the goal is to get to a place?" well obviously, the winning move is achieving the goal of getting to the place. It's so empirically obvious to the most casual observer, it becomes incredibly easy to miss.

How's Scarlett overdressed? She's wearing jeans and a T-shirt!
