Pretty sure it's
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
8. It can't be more, because then you'd have to have more than one in one row and column, and I'm pretty sure you can arrange them so that there's no more than one in each row or column.

Yep, that's right.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Can't possibly get more than 8 as you've only got 8 columns and rows. One possible solution is here

The above answers are more than likely correct....but what if you had other pieces on the board as well, situated between Queens (preventing queens from attacking each other?) You could have at least 16, and likely more, that way...

In that case, take any position on the chessboard and put a queen there. Another queen cannot possibly be placed in any of the adjacent squares, so you might as well put something else there (such as a pawn) to block it off. the closest another queen can sit is therefore 2 squares away.
Don't think this is the answer they want, but just in case, it's been spoilerised.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The tightest grid you can get with these conditions is 4 by 4, so the most in the case of blocking pieces would be 16
Also, you only actually need 14 blocking pieces if you stagger the first and third rows one column to the right.

Anyone remember The 7th Guest? When I saw this card it took me a while to remember that there was a task where you had to get a certain number of queens onto a chess board.

Wow, what an easy card. At least I know I've seen this problem before if it was in 7th Guest.

If they were all one colour then the answer could be 64. If they were black and white, which ones are attacking each other, etc.
This is a strange puzzle as it seems to use certain rules of chess and then ignore others.
