#077-yellow-circle set-mondegreen

definitely my favorite so far Laughing

You may not know...
...the word mondegreen. Coined by sylvia wright over 50 years ago in an atlantic article, it describes a phenomenon where you mishear a statement or song lyric. At the time of the article, the most famous example saw people singing "she's got a tick in her eye" to a beatles song.

This phenomenon crops up in music more than anything else. The main reason is the tendancy for many singers to mumble their words-maybe it's out of a desire to appear enigmatic, or perhaps just because they forgot their lyrics.

We've listed ten genuine examples below. All you have to do is name the songs they come from. Chances are that you'll find one that you actually thought was real, in which case consider yourself lucky-better to discover the error in private than live on stage at your next office christmas party!

1.MICE AROMA
2.SCUSE ME WHILE I KISS THIS GUY
3.I CAN'T, I CAN'T, I CAN'T STAND LUCY
4.PRETTY WALNUT, WHO I WOULD LIKE TO EAT
5.GREEN POODLE BASHER ON THE 45
6.I WON'T POKE MY EYES OUT AND SURRENDER
7.MY NAME IS PERRY MASON, I'M ADDICTED TO DRUGS
8.FIRST I'M GONNA GIVE YOU UP THEN I'M GONNA LET YOU DOWNTHEN I'M GONNA RUN AROUND AND HURT YOU
9.DECK THE HALLS WITH BUDDY HOLLY
10.A WIENER WRAP, A WIENER WRAP

like I said lol Laughing

5. Brimful of Asha

I think 3 is Can't stand Losing by The Police

Upsettingly I think I know the answer to number 8:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley

A true classic Confused

I agree with Nightingale and ChalcoDoror for the others. I also agree that this is an excellent puzzle!

This is where we have got to:-

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. My Sharona
2. Purple Haze
3. Can't stand losing you
4. Pretty Woman
5. Brimful of Asha
6. White flag
7. Addicted to love
8. Never gonna give you up
9. Rockin' around the Christmas Tree/Deck the halls (maybe)
10. The Lion sleeps tonight

However, we can't actually make this work - think it's probably to do with a slightly different title? or spelling?

Anyone?

Whilst I agree with your list it's possible that they've called No.10 Whimaway (or however you spell it). Also found out that it was based on a 1939 South African song called Mbube, but can't imagine that's the answer.

I've tried the above but it hasn't allowed the solve - but I did only use Deck the Halls for no. 9.

Anyone got a confirmed solve?

Is it Deck the Halls or Tis the Season?

Not sure that No 10 is The Lion Sleeps tonight, not really sure how you could mishear awhimawhay and get A weiner wrap?

I have exactly the same answers as above though and my didnt work either.

Pooooh! Embarassed

Making your mind up

and 9 is

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
deck the halls

I'm stuck on number 10 - but I can see where your answers have come from

I haven't got the card so I can't try, but those answers ammonite collected above are definitely right, however

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

I'm not sure if Deck The Halls has a different proper name, but its not any of the ones that have been suggested already and
I personally wouldn't spell Sharona that way, but google (and indeed the official Knack website) seems to disagree with me... :s

rach =)

Well I checked and double checked then triple checked for Deck The Halls But that is the right name and spelling. So then the only other thing I can see that is wrong is the spelling of.

[Brim Full of Asha instead of......brimful]

So far that's all I can see.[/spoiler]

Here are some scans of the card...

Interestingly there are three barcodes on this card. The one on the left is different from the other two. The first is 80729707931 and the others say 807297074918. A quick search (on www.gepir.org) reveals these to belong to a German record label called Intergroove. Curious.

Hi, I was doubtful about the spelling of no. 5 - but I checked it on my iTunes and on one of my Now CD's (from yesteryears).
