[QUESTION/SPEC] - If Perplexians ...

... don't know where they are in relation to Earth, HOW THE HELL DID THEIR LITTLE CUBE GET HERE!?!?!

I'm assuming the Reality Studies department or the Earth Studies department at The Academy has some speculation.

In other spec, how closely related or nearly identical are our Solar Systems? I mean, for both Earth and whatever planet Perplex City is on to have both evolved humans, it seems like an act of God, no? Likewise ... they speak English? Likewise ... they have Rock music?

I'm going to go ahead and stop worrying so much and enjoy the game, as I don't like examining the flaws in something that's supposed to be fun. Maybe I'll write a VFE column.

I'm no scientist, but I think the basic thing in quantum, uh, stuff, is that rather than have hard-and-fast outcomes of an atomic/sub-atomic event, there's actually a number of different potential outcomes it could be. As a result, a new universe is created for each of the different outcomes, like Sliding Doors on a very small scale.

Ergo, there's an infinite number of universes. Perplex City split off from ours at some indeterminate point in the past, but assumedly after certain things had happened - Earth being formed, humans evolving, etc. Because some tiny particle collided with another one when it didn't on Earth, the butterfly effect kicked into action and our respective societies slowly started diverging. As a result, they like puzzles! Who'd a thunk it?

As to the fact that they speak exactly the same language, I think we can turn a blind eye to such minor conveniences. I like to think that they discovered rock music when they discovered Earth, though... "Ohmygod, we might have The Cube, but they have rock and roll!"

DISCLAIMER: This post has been pure, misinformed popscience, the illegitimate child of science-fiction and Wired, plus the odd thing on the telly. As you were, cadets.

I think that the cube is antimatter, and it sucked itself through itself into our dimension. NOT STOLEN.

umm, ouch. If the cube is of any size worth mentioning, I for one would not like to be standing in the location where it appeared in our world.
When antimatter and matter combine the turn themselves completly into energy. Einstiens mass-energy equivelence equation(E=mc^2) shows you how much. And it's a lot, like gigaton range for a gram of antimatter. so, as the world is not missing a continental shelf, we can probably discount the cube being made of that material

Perhaps it is then some sort of weird third-dimension antimatter that has all sorts of strange properties. But i'm no scientist/mathematician, so don't ask me how i think it might work. Embarassed
