cards

I suspect those misprinted cards will turn out to be very valuable one day - like misprinted dollars or baseball cards. I wish I had one. /me makes another trip to Toy Tokyo this evening.

I don't think we have to worry about an error resulting in an unsolvable puzzle... we just established that comminication with Mind Candy about that sort of issue is possible. Thanks Cassandra for getting this sorted out. Smile

(Thanks for the verify, Cassandra -- what's the deal, you sleeping with Adrian Hon?)

Heh - I loved that portion of the Mind Candy presentation (referring to gaining answers by seduction Wink) But I'm all above-board! Really!

No, but over drinks at the bar at ARGFest, a bunch of us were sitting with Adrian, looking at and discussing the cards. The topic of possible printing/puzzle errors came up, and he did say that there had been one that they found, to their dismay - and when someone at the table opened Harmony up, he did say that Harmony had the arrow error on it, and that Taps was correct.

I also, er, asked wondered idly aloud whether Elucidate had any relation to certain neuroscience imaging techniques, and Adrian enigmatically replied that we shouldn't assume that all of his cards necessarily have to do with his interests. Make of that what you will....

As far as the waveform in the background goes, I'd say it's unlikely to be something as simple as a single drum kick. If you look closely, those 3 large spikes are equally spaced, implying that they're part of a rhythm. Difficult to tell without a timebase, but given their size I'd guess they're probably a big bass drumline. There appears to be a secondary beat a little later, so it's probably not a breakbeat track. The parts between the large beats don't repeat, so my suspicion is that this is around 5 seconds of some song or other piece of music, with a timebase (based on the separation of the smaller peaks) of about 2 seconds between the large peaks, though my timing guesses may well be a bit on the large side. With the waveform at this sort of resolution it's not possible to accurately speculate what sort of music it might be or if there's any singing on there, but if I was put on the spot I'd take a guess at pop/rock music. All I can say for sure though is that it's definitely not a Vanessa Mae solo, a fat lady singing, or freeform jazz.

Dear Lord, I've spent waaaaaay too much time staring at audio waveforms, haven't I?

Probably not as much time as me, Seej ... but at least I get paid to do it. Wink I was kind of off-handedly saying it might be a kick, so I certainly like your more thorough (heh heh ... Big Lebowski anyone?) thurrah analysis. Does that waveform matter in the end? Probably not.

Over in this thread Mosestrotsky wrote....

I was looking at the old Receda Cube/Sentinel articles.
In the very first one (or one of them) the Cube stolen article - each initial of the first word of each paragraph is TAPSPAT - TAPS.

Here's the article, if you'd like to check it out. And it's backwards, too.
I just thought I'd bring it over to this thread, in case finding card solves in Perplex City pages becomes a trend. Smile

Taps?

Sorry to sound like a rem... but what the hell is taps?
Is it a US thing? Are all the puzzles going to be US-centric?

Taps is a song played at U.S. Military funurals. And no, all the card solutions won't be U.S. related. In fact, this game has already proven to be more interesting if you live in London.

Taps isn't just important in the US - although it is most commonly used there - it was played at my mother's funeral - and she was a Welsh woman who never joined the military - but she was a Guider (Girl Scout leader for intrests sake), and at the end of meetings Girl Guides sing Taps... I don't know about other countires, but that is the case in the UK

I'd agree that the background wave form is an impulse - which would make sense for Taps - originally it was played just on a drum, as a rhythm, the tune was added later.

FYI - here's how I know it, the key is G, the octave above the octave starting at middle C is indicated by the ', together with the words for the first verse of evening Taps (there are other verses, and other versions) - I can't think of the tune without them anymore...

Day is Done, Gone the Sun, From the Sea, From the Hills, From the Sky,
D D G D G B D G B D G B D G B
All is Well, Safely Rest, God is Nigh
G B D' B G D D D G

Usually played on a bugle these days.

I haven't got this card yet so I can't check to see if there are any corrections for it. Also bear in mind I am not musically inclined. If you find any ignorance or misinterpretation on my part please feel free to poke a whole bunch of holes in it.

I'm determined to solve these cards myself rather than just fill in the answer and marvel in my uncanny ability to read letters from one webpage and type them in on another. If that fails, I at least would like to know *why* the answer was right Smile

The card shows the following waves (reading in the same direction that the first line goes, as mentioned in an earlier post)

445456 456456 456566 54445

I have 2 problems with this that nobody has mentioned here. Could anyone with musical talent who is familiar with this card, the solution, and music in general, confirm that they have the same problem, or tell me where I have gone wrong?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Problem 1: The wavenumber (assume unit length to be one square's side and the wavenumbers will be 4, 5 and 6) is proportional to frequency. As the frequency is all relative here anyway, it can be assumed that the frequencies are 4, 5 and 6 as well. The frequency of a musical note one key higher on the keyboard is given as that of the previous note multiplied by the 12th root of 2. If we number the key that produces 4 "Key n" and multiply by 12th root 2 to get "Key n+1" and multiply that, and so on, we get the frequencies of the higher notes:

Key n 4.00
Key n+1 4.24
Key n+2 4.49
Key n+3 4.76
Key n+4 5.04 (Closest to 5)
Key n+5 5.34
Key n+6 5.66
Key n+7 5.99 (Closest to 6)
Key n+8 6.35
Key n+9 6.73

So that means that whatever key you pick to represent frequency 4, you go up +4 keys to find the key that maps to frequency 5, and +7 keys to map to frequency 6.

"Taps" (At least the version in sheet music I found) starts with a G. 4 keys up from that gives a B, and 7 keys gives a D. Problem is, "Taps" has the notes G, C and E - C and E are 5 and 9 positions along. This means that the 5 and 6 wave squares should be 5.34 and 6.73 wave squares, surely? Otherwise the whole piece sounds a bit flat.

Problem 2: "Taps" actually has 24 notes, not 23. The missing note should be between 17 and 18, and be G one octave higher which will have a frequency double of the lower G, making it a square with 8 waves in it.

Naming the song

Ahah! the magic words - The Last Post! Now I can finally recognise the tune! That's the only title an Australian'd recognise it by.

And the clues do work best if you're in England - I've solved a few by remembering things from my year there.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Taps
and Last post are different tunes,
if anything
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
'Taps'
is US oriented.

The two tune are very similar,
but Last Post contains segments of all the other tunes played throughout
the day (e.g. Reveille, 1st Cookhouse, fall-in etc.).

so "Last Post" is not a correct answer

If I might add. I live in The Netherlands and every year at the 4th of may we remember the casualties of WW2. At eight o'clock we are all silent for two minutes. Just before taps is played on a trumpet.

So it's not just a US thing.
