[flames set] #198 - Headrush

googling for Headrush uncovered the fact that...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
there is a game of that name by berkeley systems, the people that created the after dark screensavers. the card's kinda reminiscent of the flying toasters, so there may be a link there. or... maybe not Smile

I looked at it and thought "bowling balls" - perhaps the different colours will give us a set of numbers to play with based on the weights?

Not wildly likely, I know, and not particularly relevant to the card title either, but we're just pushing ideas around at this stage, aren't we?

Are bowling ball colours and weights standardised?

Headrush

I was wondering about bowling balls too when I first saw them, but there is no standard fixing weight to colour or size afaik.

Back to the drawing board.

Is the solve to work out which coloured disc falls within the most number of 'orbits' of the other discs or has the most in it's orbit?

As in the large mauve disc in the bottom left has 5 discs in its orbit yet it is only in 2 discs orbits

i like the idea of orbits - but i don't know where to go with it Smile

i thought maybe the circles represented valencies, but there's a lot of 6s, 5s and 4s but not much else. i've tried overlaying...

the molecules of nicotine and THC (but not caffeine)...
however, as no 2 circles have quite the same colour or size - i think i'm probably barking up the wrong trouser leg...

A hint from Von says:

It's all in the eyes

Which makes me think that they're not supposed to be bowling balls, but faces: turning the card to the right makes this evident, but where to go from there is anyone's guess!

If they're faces, I thought I'd try the Masquerade approach and draw lines, see if they pointed to anything. I used one 'eye' and the 'nose' as a basis for each line and ended up with:

nothing that made any sense to me

Can't see a pattern or significance, but there must be some reason why some balls have different numbers of 'orbits' around them - four, five and six.
Also it seems to me that no two balls are exactly the same colour - could Pantone numbers come into it?
Just thinking out loud...

I know lots about tenpin bowling. I ran a local tenpin bowling league for five years, and have an average of about 165, (which is a bit crap actually.)

Anyway, There is no standard colouring system for bowling balls. AMF change their house ball colouring system every few years, and I think Brunswick do too. Also, if you buy your own ball, you can pretty much get any colour you like (mine is a lovely mix of bright yellow, forest green and flourescent pink.) - besides, every ball on the headrush card is a different colour anyway.

There is a standardisation for bowling ball size, actually, although it's simply "they're all the same" - this is to make it fair, and also because different sized balls will get stuck in the machines.

Standard bowling ball weights are in pounds, and, for house balls, multiples of 2. 8 pounds is about as light as you'll see, and, we're looking children to use them. most people who don't bowl regularly should use a 12, but if you're feeling macho, use a 14. Some people will use a 16, but they tend to have a little too much momentum to create nice movement in the pin deck. If you buy your own ball, you can get odd numbered weights.

American balls might be different, but I don't think they are.

--

Knowing a lot about bowling doesn't seem to be helping with this card. I suspect bowling references to be defunct, at least in the first level of any solve.

I don't have the card so I can't really comment for certain, but am I correct in saying that it looks like the grey one in the center has *no* concentric circles radiating out from around it, despite its somewhat medium size?

some more stuff that -might- be important.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If these are bowling balls, you should note that about half are left-handed, and about half are right handed. In general, the top half of them are for lefties, and the bottom half are for righties. However, there's a mingling a bit in the middle. As far as I can make out The left-handed ones are as follows:

From the top.

the group of three in the top left. The yellow one to their right, the brown one to its right, the blue one in the top right. the grey, red, green, slateblue and mauve ones below it. Also, the green and hotpink pair at the middle left, the small orangy one about an inch to their right, the dark grey one about an inch below that, the light pink one an inch to the grey ones right. The larger orange one above that pink one, and the two khaki ones just below that pink one.

I have indexed all the balls by handedness and colour, traced the image and coloured it in to place each ball in one of six categories. This appears to have been a completely useless waste of time Smile

To conclude. They're faces.

It has five. They're faint.

Even with the card I'm not sure how many one of the balls has. To get to it, start at your grey one and go right, down, down. The lines there are so faint and intermingled my vision is going blurry trying to work it out.

If it helps I count with great difficulty (card turned on side):

14 balls/faces with holes in bottom right
7 with holes in bottom left
7 with holes in top right
13 with holes in top left

I think that there is some way of joining them up but there will be one left over.
