You're right Aleph13...one could be, for example, a wok, and the other three ingredients.

I think the recipe is going to be something simple, like cheese bread, pickle and a grill...hey presto, cheese on toast (with pickle). What could you cook suggests to me that there's going to be more than one thing possible from those ingredients.

Another possibility is that the ingredients aren't exhaustive, but suggest a certain classic dish, like olives, anchovies, eggs and lettuce = Salad Nicoise.

This is all pointless conjecture isn't it? No e-mail from GS1 waiting for me this morning, and now Ive made myself hungry (there's no 'hungry' emoticon...I'll have to be satisfied with 'I could eat a Pony?! )

Nice first post, it's good to start without being too uptight about posting, but don't post-whore!

The M .... S one might be from UK chain Marks & Spencer? Can't think of what W .... G might stand for, though - Walmart Group?

Not sure that that's how the company codes work. Check out the link to the GS1 site I posted above. With the EAN-13 (the two long barcodes) the country is indicated by the first three digits (not including the lettering) and then the company can be assigned a number after that.

I've not received a reply or acknowledgement from GS1 UK (despite the fact that they "love receiving enquiries"). Will bug them some more, but probably not til next week now. If anyone else wants to try them in the meantime feel free.

I found the company for the UK EAN-13 barcode via the GS1-UK site using the Quick Links combo and selecting Number Search

Code:
Number search results for 5034739501922

Company Name         Hoo Hing Ltd
Place Name
Address              Hoo Hing Commercial Centre
                     Freshwater Road
                     Chadwell Heath
Town                 ROMFORD
County               ESSEX
Postcode             RM8 1RF
Main Phone Number    020 8533 2811
Main Fax Number      020 8533 2810
Number Description

The company website is here. They have 5 superstores in London; If someone could visit one and have them lookup the barcode that would be nice Smile

EDIT:
I did some searching on their online-store and found a product with a reference number of #50192( the last 2 in the barcode is a check-digit): Gold Plum Bamboo Shoot Strips 565G (565g) - Price: £0.50. Hopefully someone should be able to verify that this is the correct product

That's weird...I found this earlier (see above) and rang Hoo Hing giving them the barcode, and they said they didn't have it on their system. Either I cocked up or they did. ATM the former is far more likely.

Definitely worth checking out in person if anyone's able to, and looks like some definitely going to be something stirfry-ish...Smile

Have you had any luck with the others step?

I visited a Marks & Spencer today, although unfortunately I didn't have a note of the barcode in question, I can report that *all* M&S food products have the format

M <four digits> <three digits> S

So I would say it is definitely from M&S. I hope to return to check the barcode in question later.

[PARTIAL SOLVE]

And the answer is .... beansprouts!

Checked at the checkout today - when I said it was part of a puzzle the assistant said 'that's cheating, innit?' (asking her to look up the code). I hope this doesn't fall within the definition of 'brute force'!

I don't think that is "brute forcing". At least, compared with brute-forcing Pietro's maze, this one is fairly used. Is there any other way that we can get information about products and their barcodes? I see that if there's a better way of obtaining information, we can use it. As long as you don't hack or guess passwords randomly.

I wasn't really expecting it to be brute force, that was just a (weak) joke, but thanks for the reassurance!

I think that the answer is (as I suggested earlier) stir fry. From Hoo HIng (oriental supermarket), and Beansprouts, it is probably eastern food, and stir fry is the only thing i can think of with beansprouts with that many ingredients (besides noodles in various varieties)

loads of dishes involve stir frying beansprouts -- stir fry is just a method of cooking like boil or bake not a dish in itself
but who knows -- shrug

After doublecross figuring out the M-S barcode, I did some digging and found a possible origin for the W-G EAN-8 barcode:

Westminster Grocery
Address: 12 Vincent Street, London , SW1P 4HB
Telephone: 020 7834 1675

As mentioned previously the number system from the barcode, 22, represents an in-store number and hence is not available for lookup on-line so someone would have to visit the store to verify if they do indeed use this barcode format on their products.

Still no luck on the Singapore barcode. The naming authority can be found at http://www.sanc.org.sg/. I've tried using that site, http://www.nepc.gs1.org.sg/ and http://www.gepir.org/client.htm. I think the best option at this point is for someone to visit a store that is known to sell products from Singapore and have them look it up.
