[XBOX] Battlefield 2 demo

I'm told that this month's issue of Official Xbox Magazine's demo disc has an Xbox-Live-Only demo of Battlefield 2. I'm gonna go pick it up this afternoon. Anyone else have it and want to meet up in a game tonight?

Oh man, this is tempting! After reading all the incredible reviews about BF2 on the PC, I almost went ahead and bought it! But I'm kinda waiting for the Xbox/360 version of the game ... How much is the OXM magazine? I've never bought one before!

Oooohhhh... tempting.

I guess my biggest concern is price as well. I'll have to see how much the mag is, although I can't imagine a single issue being more than a few bucks.

I think it's around $7 - $8. That's about the average price for a magazine with bundled CD.

I'll be out near Borders later, so I guess I'll pick up a copy; I have the Battlefield 2 demo on my PC but my PC's been acting flaky lately, and it would be nice to play with some other Beefolk.

I just grabbed it. $9.99 for the issue with the demo disc. Steeper than I expected, but still not too bad. I've paid ~$8 for a demo disc alone before.

It also has playable demos of Sid Meier's Pirates, and Darkwatch, and a bunch of video only previews.

Hrm.

Ah well, I've probably paid more for less. YOu can get subscriptions to it for like $15, if we wanted to look into doing this more often. Especially with the XBox360 coming out soon.

I'll be stopping by B&N tonight for a couple of things, I'll try to remember to pick it up then.

well i got the demo disc, but my xbox claims it is not a valid, playable disc. There isn't a scratch on it, so that's not the problem.

I'm not impressed. Anyone else ever have this issue with an OXM disc?

edit: it seems to be working for now. crossing my fingers.

I've got it (have a subscription) and I'll see if I can jump on tonight too.

quick control cheat sheet, since the game gives you very little guidance:

At this point you can't create your own game, since its a demo. Join one of the premade games (hosted by EA so lag is not an issue, which is nice). All are on the same map and the same gametype (pretty much Territories from Halo). Once inside a game, pause and you can invite people from your friends list.

IMPORTANT: you must hold down the white button to talk to your entire team. Don't just click it and let go. People near you can hear you just by talking, like in Halo.

Thumbsticks work like Halo (including push in right stick to zoom)

A = jump
B = enter/exit vehicle/turret
X = crouch (you can crouch and then push again to lie down)
Y = nothing I can figure out

To change weapons, hold down the left trigger. A menu pops up, use the right stick to point at the weapon you want.

Reloading is the one function I haven't been able to figure out yet.

When driving a tank, the left stick drives the tank and the right aims the turret.

When a passenger in the helicopter, use B to get out. Then while in midair, push the black button to deploy your parachute. Flying the helicopter is tricky. One stick handles up/down, the other rotates and forward/back. I think... still hazy.

edit: also, don't try to view the list of players while waiting to respawn. It has crashed the game for me a number of times.

First thing, my disc wouldn't work! After a quick google search "OXM disc not working", I found out that the solution is to boil the disc for 5-15 seconds. Shocked Yes, you read it right, throw it into boiling water and it'll work like a charm! They say it removes a thin layer of something ... All I know is it works!

About the game, it was fun to play with Thunder, INCyr and Rufo. It's somewhat confusing in the beginning and it takes some getting used to, as expected. And I know it's only a demo, but it makes you appreciate Halo2's Live implementation more and more! I don't remember how many times I got the "server not available at this time" and random freezes! But it was a lot!

I had fun, despite that Bernando team-killing ****! At the end, I could almost tell where I was on that huge map! I still have no idea what's the best class to use or how to throw grenades. I was only using spec ops class and shooting my SMG, which is much better than its Halo counterpart.

I'm willing to try again this week. Maybe tonight.

very bizarre solution! My disc started working after I wiped it off about five times.

I liked the game overall, but the crashing got extremely annoying. And yes, it does take a bit of getting used to. Especially flying the helicopter. But by the end I was all over it.

I'm just not a vehicle guy ... I have much more fun running and (trying) to sneak around than driving a vehicle. But vehicles seem to be much more important on this game than on Halo2, so I think I'll have to try to do that more.

Now that we're getting the hang of it, meaning we're not running in random directions, we should try to coordinate a bit better. There's definitely potential on this game!

One question, do you always appear on enemy's radar? I was trying to figure out if there was any difference between the different stance positions, but I think that if you're moving they can see you, right?

I don't think you show up on the minimap/radar thingy, except if the sniper uses their GPS unit. That illuminates everyone on radar for a few seconds.

But when you get close to an enemy they do get a dot on them in the main screen, I'm not sure of the exact requirements for that.

This was my favorite helicopter experience last night:

there's no greater thrill than riding a helicopter into battle, blazing the chain gun out the side as your buddy hovers around an objective. As the copter gets picked to pieces by enemy rockets, you abandon ship - jump out, parachute to a rooftop guns a-blazing, and secure the area as the wreckage of your ride rains down around you.

Yeah, I could definitely see some red dots on my radar once in a while. I just couldn't figure out how to avoid that. Halo instincts were making me walk slower to avoid the radar, but that was probably useless!

Thunder, I want to get a ride on your heli! I didn't try the parachutes yesterday! Completely forgot about it! Bang Head
