Update from Mercury:

Not
Discovery Scarp
Discovery rupes
Amru Al-Qays

I couldn't resist the crater named after the obscure Arab poet.

Mercury is looking devoid of atmosphere.

the card

IS there a possibility that we are looking for a place or name that means "to shine light" or "light" only in another language.

Well, from a quick skim of info about planetary nomenclature...

...Io has several types of features named after fire/sun gods/goddesses
...Titan has craters named after gods/goddesses of wisdom
...Hyperion has features named after sun & moon gods/goddesses

A quick google for the phrase
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"represents itself sensibly"
reveals a book titled "The Meaning of the Earth" (Not the answer btw).

The book is a study of phenomenology, a branch of psychology which includes elucidating pictures.

Back to the ink blot theory maybe ?

ok, following on from the Von's tip, I think its to do with a sense of the brain, most likely Visual. I think its a topographic representation made from rastergrams of signals from neurons of the visual cortex (... from poor little monkeys)
Saying this, however, from what ive found - the thing that looks most like it is the same thing, but to do with the auditory centre (also on those poor monkehs). At the very least "topographic" is a good search keyword

giving up on mercury for the moment...
I have access to the OED and looked up elucidate. It has the meaning, which we are all familiar with but also a list of quotations and dates for the word as well as the etymology.
I reproduce it here to see if anyone can spot anything pertinent.

By the way, did you know that it was used as an adjective, as in 'this card is really very easy, the solution was elucidate'. Found in the 1670s in the sermons of John Hackett. Anyway. This is to get other people thinking, hope this isn't just clutter.

f. late L. lcidt- ppl. stem of lcid-re, f. out + lcidus bright.]

trans. To render lucid; now only fig. to throw light upon, clear up, explain. Also absol.

I for one was very interested in your info even if it doesn't help us solve the card. We already feel like we're spilling blood. I hope the etymology doesn't lead someone to p on it as well.

Ive been sitting back patiently reading away at your comments - just trying to find some inspiration

Unfortunately, I think I have too much, and have gone off on a muddle of tangents.

1. Ok from the hint
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
'but it represents itself sensibly' indicates to me that this could be a mirror?

2. Ive also been trawling the web on the Mars path. Dont ask me how I got there, but found

http://www.danielmoorepoetry.com/mns/marsAndBeyond.html
led me back to Mars, and funnily enough saw this:

Mars casts a shadow on its neighboring planets Elsa and
Sonrietta although we can't see them because they are basically
ethereal and their inner light prevents them from
gross human visibility

Anyway, Elsa and Sonrietta are the moons Phobos and Deimos.

http://www.tmgnow.com/repository/mars/bartjordan_1.html

3. another tangent

http://www.enterprisemission.com/mars/papers.php?page=paper1

4. My last thought was to take the scan of the card and crop the edges. Probably a coincedence but the Adrian Hon bit perfetly is chopped off and the vertical 'lines' are pretty much level. I cant do it now (lack of printer), but wanted to print it out and join the top and bottom to make a nice tube. It looks as though the 'lines' match up?

What this proves - I dont know.

thats me done for today

Every tittle helps

Just throwing one in at random here (it's 3:25am so cut me some slack especially if it's already been suggested Laughing)...

Does our esteemed puzzle scribe have any interests in the ocean? Maybe we need to shed some light on the ocean floor Razz

Acoustic backscatter (example here: http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/pacmaps/sd-mos.html ) has some eerily familar features.

The only problem is whether our card has some major cliffs and troughs or if it is not completely mapped Sad

Hi

I sent a scan of the card to a Dr. Davies at Cardiff University School of Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences. I asked if the picture represented any kind of geological area or phenomenon. He very kindy replied to say...

Quote:
Extensional faults with structural contours marked on.

I haven't had time to look this up on google yet - but this is interesting scroll down to the 'Mapping' section.

I was thinking along the same lines. I've been loking at maps of the sea but haven't managed to come across any that look like the correct location.

elucidate....perhaps the 2nd meaning "to clarify" is more likely the true meaning of the card

Has anyone tried scanning and printing this card onto a *clear* medium? You know, like a transparency. I don't have the means to do that where I am but once you do then my take on it would be to look at the image at various angles. Or, of course, overlay it over something else. Like a map?

To print the image onto a clear medium would be a lot closer to the meaning of 'elucidate' (let's take that verb as a hint as to what to do to the image, yep? Smile) - it only means 'shed light on' in an oblique way, more literally it means to clarify, to *make lucid*.
