I don't know the specifics yet on ordering the DVD as to cost and to which countries it is available.

You didn't mention cost, but I think that people should be aware that it will cost something - I don't know the exact amount yet. I don't think anyone expected to get a professionally produced DVD for no cost. But I wanted to make sure, in case there was any misunderstanding.

Well, I didn't mention it because I'd think it's pretty logical they won't make and ship the whole thing for free Smile

Looking forward to it!

Well, how about an unprofessionally produced DVD? Can I get that for free?

DVD / ARG Fest Footage Availability

OK, I don't have all the details worked out yet but I wanted to let everyone know that the footage from the NYC ARG Fest will be available in several formats / versions, including a free alternative for downloading the raw, unedited footage at some point, for those who can't afford to help support the production of the DVD.

There will also be a professionally edited and produced DVD available at cost (or as close to cost as possible) for those who want a better quality version with additional content and materials.

To that point, if anyone has pictures that they would like and can allow us to use on the DVD, either on the cover or as content, please PM or email me asap. You need to be able to assure us that the pictures were taken by you, and that everyone shown within them has given their permission to reproduce or use them in this way. The easiest would therefore obviously be pictures of yourself, but if you have other images of people who will allow you to use them like this, feel free to submit them as well. High quality pictures of the game posters, facilities, etc are also good.

Because of the extremely compressed time frame we are dealing with I need to gather this material asap, hopefully by this weekend so please get in touch with me as quickly as you can. I should have details about how the raw footage and edited DVD will be distributed shortly.

Hmm, permission from everyone pictured? That may be tough. The most obvious picture would be the group shot (Celina has the high res version) but tracking down everyone before the weekend might be difficult.

That being said, I hereby give permission for any picture of me to be used/added to the DVD except anything showing me with alcohol (or dancing in the bar). Wink

I've PMed Dave giving him permission to use anything in my Flickr account (NOT the ARGFest05 pool, just my personal collection), so if anyone has any objections to any particular picture being used, please let me know.

AFAIK, *I* have no pics of drunken Kona's, so you're safe there Smile

Um, to clarify --

I think Dave is asking for permission to you use your pictures, not pictures of you. There's a Flickr group, I can't imagine anyone would have a problem with Dave using pics from there, seeing as how they're already a 'Public' group.

Displaying the pictures and using the pictures in copyrighted / commerical work is a bit diffrent. IIRC they need a release form, or a written agreement that the image of you can be used.

To quote a page on BetterPhoto i found on the subject:

BetterPhoto wrote:

Following industry standards, for any work that will appear in consumer or trade magazines, newspapers, or educational books, you generally do not need a model release. This is also true for photographic exhibits. These are considered educational/informational uses.

However, for photos that will be used in commercial applications - ads, brochures, posters, greeting cards, catalogs, postcards, kiosks, trade shows, Web sites, etc. - you will need a release from your subject in order to be "legal."

Then you get into the whole thing of the photos an't owned by Dave so he has to ask for permission to use them. And since all the photos are pritty much "© all rights reserved" he'd have to check with everyone.... doesnt matter if its displayed publicly or not.

[edit]

Just a quick check, Chippie's are all right reserved, graywolf are CreativeCommons but no commercial use clause in it....permission asking all round Smile

i think he needs both - the whole privacy/copyright thing is a quagmire - consent has to be given explicitly, and for specific purpose. At work, people have been very upset when a photo of them which was published in the staff paper, and that they agreed to, appeared on the intranet website, even though more people probably saw the paper.

In that case, my pictures at flickr are also available for publication (heck, I was the one that first suggested ARGFest photos get on to the DVD). I give permission to use.

Also mentioned by MC, copyright could cause serious problems for commercial ARGs Smile

Its bad enough trying to get permission from one photographer who took a picture you would like to use on your site only to find out he didnt get a model release and we get the backlash (been there, done that).

ARG Fest DVD

Here are the details of the ARG Fest DVD availability and related issues -

I've gone ahead and funded the production of the ARG Fest DVD with the intent of making them available at cost to anyone who wants one (US or abroad) while quantities last. The DVDs are in production now and will begin shipping approximately September 1st.

First, however, as a way of thanking them for participating in or working on the ARG Fest, I've decided to donate free copies to all the members of the PM teams who made presentations at the ARG Fest and to the people who worked on putting it all together. It just didn't feel right to ask them to pay anything for the DVD after the time, effort, and money they have all already put into producing such a great event.

So, if you are one of these PMs or someone who helped plan the event, please send your name and mailing address to: argfestdvdSPLATdaveszulborski.com to receive your free copy.

That accounts for approximately 20 of the 100 DVDs being produced. Because I couldn't afford to be stuck with left over DVDs and wasn't certain how many people would buy them, I've worked out a deal with New Fiction Publishing to buy half of the remaining DVDs at cost, with an arrangement that I can buy them back for direct sale to ARG'ers if there is more demand than I anticipated. Otherwise, New Fiction will be using them for promotional purposes - as giveaways with books and other products or as prizes in their upcoming projects. They will not be selling them for a profit.

That leaves 40 DVDs that I will be selling at cost to anyone who wants them. The easiest way to do this and be as close as possible to the cost of producing them is to sell them at $15.00 per DVD with a flat shipping/handling fee of $5.00 for a total cost of $20.00 per DVD. I assure you that this will not generate any profit for me personally - in some cases the $20 will make a few cents based on shipping etc but in other cases it loses money, so overall it should be a wash. There is nothing built in for my time in helping create the DVD or in actually packaging them so I am not pocketing anything from the project. (I am stating all this only so there are no questions about whether or not I am profiting from this in any way.)

The DVD will contain all of the PM presentations from Saturday, July 23rd, Jane McGonigal's ARG talk, and pictures from the ARG Fest event. You can read more about it and start ordering the DVD here:

http://www.daveszulborski.com/argfestdvd.html

Right now it is just set up to accept PayPal orders but I hope to have credit card acceptance there shortly too. Also, for people who may not understand the connection, the PayPal account it takes you to will say "Chasing The Wish", which is an account I set up for a game I did a few years ago and still use a personal PayPal account. So don't be worried about whether that is right when you see it.

Due to limitations with PayPal, it may say "US only" as far as shipping but I will send them to people oversees as well. Just go ahead and use the order form and the comment box provided to give your address and any other details I need to know. Likewise, for anyone who doesn't use PayPal and doesn't want to use a credit card either, you can send me a check or money order. Send an email to argfestdvdSPLATdaveszulborski.com to let me know to hold one for you until the check arrives.

Finally, for those who don't want to or can't afford to buy the DVD, the raw, unedited footage shot at the ARG Fest will be made available online for download in the near future. There is over 5 hours of material so it will probably be broken up and made available in segments. Details about how and when it will be posted to follow soon.
