An excellent article on games and violence.

http://gr.bolt.com/articles/violence/violence.htm

Long story short: since the late mid 90's, violent crime has been dropping like a rock, and today's youth are the most non-violent generation on record.
To put in better context: this thing about violent games creating a deadly generation is complete, and utter bull.
You'll notice the drop-off begins in the mid 90's, right about when the murderous generation of kids supposedly popped and starting killing each other. Thats right, what is painted to be the deadliest time in adolescent history is, barring the unfortunate tragedies, the safest. Strangely enough, its the same time video games went hyper-reality and super-blood-and-guts, too, and supposedly warped the younger generation's sense of reality and morality.

Something stinks in Denmark.
