New ARG? Two emails

Normally I'm not the first to hear about new ARGs, but I've just received two emails which are, well, a bit bizarre and lead me to believe that someone is trying something new.

The first email, received yesterday, was from aqua_matronSPLAThotmail.com using the name 'Mneme O'Syne' and addressed to laiaSPLATfamiliasalla-es.ro (which is of course why it caught my attention). The only contents of the email was this image:

...---... l ai v dZ 3: n .. l d o t k o m s l @ S t i l d .. h u: ^ n d r s k o: r i n ...---...

The second email, received a few minutes ago, was from ses15SPLATduke.edu although I am not so certain about this. It contained this message:

Quote:
Hi ah hah,

the red queen stopped by my site, Evidence for God from Science
and created an "Out of this World" E-Card just for you! To pick up your
card, simply point your browser at the page listed below.

http://www.godandscience.org/cards/apr6-6206523229.html

The card will remain on the server for about two weeks, so
please print it out or save it as soon as you can.

So usually I would just discount all of this to just someone playing silly buggers, and to be honest I am not so keen on people promoting ARGs via email. Yet I was interested by this one; it seems that the perp has at least a vague knowledge of AI lore (cf. 'laia' and 'the red queen'). Very peculiar. Who wants to do some research on this?

Incidentally, I find it hard to believe that other people didn't receive these emails either. It's not like I'm the only person in the ARG community. So, 'fess up, who else got these? And while you're at it, any ideas as to the PM?

Hmm, looks interesting! The 1's and 0's on the card's l33t sp33k don't seem to form anything in binary. I suspect they might be morse code, but i'm not sure how to space them.

From the name, Mneme O'Syne

Mneme- In Greek mythology, Mneme was one of the three original Muses, though there were later nine. She was the muse of memory.

O'syne doesnt seem to have any meaning, but i assume it means 'of signs' because of the next email.

As for the image, i've not a clue.

got the emails too

I got the first one to laia, but deleted it because my email client doesn't display pictures, so I just thought it was spam.

They were addressed to me as "wholoki". I don't know where the extra i came from.

So then I got the second one. The binary code spells out "entrapped" if you . . .

1. Put each line of binary on one line each (should be 5 digits per line)
2. Add it up to get integers.
3. Convert the integer to a character, starting from a=1.

Image on red queen card

It's of Callisto.

Link here to NASA news report about strange spires eroding mysteriously without atmosphere, and possible underground oceans. It's also where the image came from (apparently the only global colour image obtained from Galileo in May 2001.

Quote:
Callisto ("ka LIS toh") is the eighth of Jupiter's known satellites and the second largest. It is the outermost of the Galilean moons.

Callisto was a nymph, beloved of Zeus and hated by Hera. Hera changed her into a bear and Zeus then placed her in the sky as the constellation Ursa Major.

from this site

Quote:
Callisto became pregnant, and tried desperately to conceal her condition from the goddess. After all, she had, in a way, broken her vow to the goddess and she feared her anger. Callisto had been successful for a time, but then a day came when all of the young women who followed Artemis disrobed to bathe together in a spring. By now Callisto was beginning to show, and once she was naked her secret was revealed. Artemis was furious and she banished the young woman from her fold. Callisto wandered off to have her child alone.

which if the two e-mails are linked, may tie in somehow to the e-mail address the first one was sent from (aqua_matronSPLAThotmail.com)??

Hope this helps someone!

Interesting that the only capital letters spell out TGIF.

Extracting the zeroes and ones from the message gives you:

00101
01110
10010
00001
10000
10000
00101
00100

5 columns of 8 could be ascii, but I came up with values of 48, 64, 195, 96 and 144 which works out to 0@+`É

Any other interpretations come to mind?

OK, I got it too. It hasn't been mentioned yet that the graphic has an ALT tag:

...---... l ai v dZ 3: n .. l d o t k o m s l @ S t i l d .. h u: ^ n d r s k o: r i n ...---...

Is it hiding an URL or an email addy? The morse at the beginning and end is SOS.

Well, at first, I thought

Excluding the SOS, I believe the first part reads:

live journal dotcom slash tilde

The second part is probably a name, something like "hunderscoren" (the symbols are pronunciation symbols, I'm not sure how to interpret the "^").
