[ROUTE66][PRE-LAUNCH] Are you ready for a journey? I thought I would go ahead and start a new thread about the ARG in the new book "Beyond Reality: A Guide to Alternate Reality Gaming".
There is information about the book and the ARG within at this link .
This page also has a secure login.

So do we have to buy the book to have the faintest idea what's going on?

It looks like its a "test case" ARG, where the reader can run through a ARG start to finish....but it looks like all the solutions will be in the book:
Quote:
Chapter 5 Down the Rabbit Hole: Introducing "Route 66"
Chapter 6 Route 66 ARG, Part II
Chapter 7 Route 66 ARG, Part III (Conclusion)
So it hardly looks like a "live" ARG.

Hopefully I shall be getting that book very very soon when it finally arrives in stock at my nearest book store. Bearing in mind there will be more to come at the online chat on the 8th of August.
Cracking avatar by the way Cold_Fire. I could sit here and watch it all day.

You never know, there may be prize money at the end just like there is for PxC.

I have rarely felt so compelled to post a response in size-20 bold italic capitals. I've managed to restrain myself, however. Okay:
1) No, this seems like a free ARG for people that buy a book about ARGs, which makes perfect sense. Or:
2) No, it's a free ARG to promote the book, a model I'm sure you're familiar with that also makes perfect sense. Or:
3) Maybe it is an attempt to make you pay for an ARG, and to be as polite as possible, I find the suggestion that this is somehow "not OK" to be infuriating and self-centered.

Sorry if this pisses anyone off, but I really wouldn't recommend the book. It's written by John Gosney. Who is he?
Quote:
John Gosney is currently the Director of Information Technology for the Indiana University School of Dentistry, and is also an adjunct instructor for the IU School of Liberal Arts on the Indianapolis campus. John has worked in both the publishing and pharmaceutical industries as an application developer, technical writer, and training consultant. John writes extensively on all facets of the IT arena, from market analysis and forecasts to guidebooks on a variety of topics. His most recently published titles with Course include "Blogging for Teens" (1592004768), "Convert Your VHS Home Movies to DVD" (1592004822) and "HTML Professional Projects" (159200055X). John received his B.A. in technical writing and psychobiology in 1992 from Purdue University and an M.A. in English from Butler University in 1996. John, who resides in Columbus, Indiana, enjoys sports, reading, listening to music, and spending time with his family.
So how did he become an expert on ARGs? Has he ever written one, much less played one? I think he'd put it there if he had. Sorry, but I'd much rather get my info from someone who actually has experience with the genre.
Get Dave Szulborski's book instead. I just finished reading the whole thing from front to back for the second time, and it's still an EXCELLENT read.
EDIT: Wait, perhaps he can fix your teeth! All is not lost!

"Blogging for teens" -- cos that's all it takes to write an ARG these days

Wow.
Look, I don't know who this guy is, either. But there's plenty of people who don't know who I am, and that I happen to specialize in ARG clown extraction techniques, but that's not gonna stop me from trying to decipher these two cases of white makeup labels I just had delivered to my home!!!
... and then write a book about it!!!
IOW, way to pre-judge.

For a quality experience, the clown has to be REAL.

1)I'm pretty sure my not-particularly-radical-or-inflammatory opinion wouldn't have merited a shouty size 20 reaction , however:
2)The book is almost meritless (according to forumites elsewhere and a few web reviews), and if the game has been designed by the author, it is probably a highly produced (good thing), derivative and soulless (bad things!) bit of ARGing.
Either we're asked to pay for a book that retreads old territory in a boring, anal fashion, and are given this game for free, or we're buying the uninteresting book to pay for a game which will give newbie ARGonauts a first ARGxperience which is misrepresentative of this culture we've fallen for, and may in fact turn them off the genre.
Admittedly, I don't know whether the game will be bland or spectacularly innovative, but I doubt the latter unless an experienced outside grassroots team has been given the job.
I should have explained the reasoning behind my emoticonic disgust in the first place , but there it is.
For all we know, though, this guy will redeem himself (not that the book is a complete disaster, as far as i know) with this game, and it'll merit the book's purchase price.
*sits on the fence to wait for the launch*
