Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Call me a drooly fanboy, but I'm sincerely interested to hear what (if any) members of the ARG community are reading or have read the new Harry Potter book and, if so, what you thought. I just finished mine tonight.

I have heard many mixed reviews from people on a whole; all commentary is welcome here. Personally, I like the series - I think Rowlings has a keen attention to detail, as well as a knowledge of the world she's created that allowed her to include a lot of fun extra details that make the books interesting to re-read. I also have (excluding the newest book) found it very difficult to predict many of her plot twists.

However, I know a lot of people have felt otherwise. What do you think?

(PS: If anyone is interested in some rambly speculation on book seven, please let me know. Smile )[/spoiler]

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I did not see this plot twist coming, although looking back, I was thick not to. I won't give away too much, but I believe that there is more than meets the eye, after initial shock, and I think the situation will be revisited at length in the next book.

I want to read it, but can't be bothered to buy a copy. Sigh. Apathy vs Interest. Apathy wins every time

OMG I loved it, and i"m waiting a couple of weeks before I buy a non first edition copy and read again and again and again!

I'll tell you what though, Ms Rowling doesn't waste time - she jumps right on it in chapter one. Great.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I friggin bawled my eyes out so hard in the last chapter. To be honest, I sat there for a couple of hours in complete disbelief thinking "why? Oh, I know it had to be done, but why?" heh.

It'll be sad when the series is over, but at least then we can get our 7 book boxed sets, and 7 disc full series sets....

So hanging out for Goblet of Fire to come out in November!!!!

I found it probably more gripping and relevant that any of the other books, its climax only matched in horror by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I did find the principle plot twists easy to foresee, though the methods of achieving them was still particularly potent and fierce.

I'm reading it. I only have about 200 more pages left. I'm liking it though. Even if I hated it, I would probably still read book seven, just to know what happens in the end.

maybe I read it too quickly but I thought it didn't really go anywhere and could almost have been tagged on as an extra chapter inthe 5th book.

perhaps I ought to read it again!!??

I almost cryed on the last chapter, maybe like one tear came out. But it was sad. Cant wait for the next book.

I loved the book. Left me on a bit of a cliff at the end and i was just hating the way everything happened in that last chapter. really upset that everything just died round about the end of the book where so many good things were.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
But it looks like goodbye to Hogwarts for number 7 in the series. Huge disappointment there.

I doubt it - I mean, yeah, Harry says he's not gonna go back, but I think he has to, partially because McGonnagal (hehe McGonigal) and his only other surviving allies (except Lupin) WILL be there (I doubt Hermione would leave school, and Mrs. Weasley wouldn't let Ron leave). I predict he might make some appearances at school, but won't be doing school-work and stuff, due to looking for and destroying the Horcruxes.

Yeah, you have got a point there, but i don't see how Harry would be able to do both, i mean, with all that security and the death how will he manage to keep disappearing?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Hermione and Ron have already said that they're going with Harry no matter what. If Fred and George can brush off their mother's wishes, so can Ron.

I believe that Hogwarts will stay open and that the narrative of the book will be split in half. One half, of course, would follow Harry, Hermione, and Ron with Harry being the focus. The other half would follow Ginny, Neville, and Luna at the school. I'm going to guess that Neville will be the focus of that half of the book, but it's hard to say, as you could make equally compelling cases for both him and Ginny. It certainly wouldn't be Luna.

I don't think that they will get rid of Hogwarts, JK wouldn't jsut get rid of that many characters that easily. I think that Harry will find that the Horcruxes are IN Hogwarts or something

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Or perhaps Harry doesn't intend on going back to school, but something will happen at Fleur and Bill's wedding that makes him go, perhaps a visit from Dumbledore in his dreams or something. I agree the other horcruxes will be found at hogwarts, or perhaps someone else will find one (perhaps someone will buy one from diagon alley of knockturn alley) and they'll take it to school and Harry will find it there, who knows!! All I know is that I am now hanging out for book 7....

I just finished reading this, and...I don't know, I kinda got the sense that the plot wasn't as strong and self-contained as it was in the other books. Don't get me wrong, the book was really good, but it felt like a long prequel to book 7 (which, yes, I can't wait to read!). I mean, what really was the plot here?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Dumbledore passes on his knowledge to Harry, Snape betrays him and leaves Harry without his wise mentor and with this burning purpose - it's all set-up for the next book. It seems like the main on-going plot is essentially the old potions book, but that's really fairly minor, except for where it intersects with the Snape-is-evil (or is he?) plotline.
I'm not really complaining, because I quite like the direction the series is going in, but it seems like this book was different from the others in this regard. Anyone agree, or do I need to reread it to see all the plot that I totally missed?
