I see your banana and raise you a barrel of monkeys.

Today, I tweaked the Card Catalog to display the card letters in playing-card-order instead of numeric order, giving a slightly better view of the message:

http://perplexcitycardcatalog.com/letters.html

Unfortunately, there are a few issues. First, I do not have complete "enhanced partial letter" scans/photoshops for all of the cards. Second, when people have submitted those photoshopped cards to enhance the letters, they don't always see the big picture, so there are some very visible errors in interpreting the letter shapes when you place the cards next to one another.

Obvious data errors (missing cards, missing "enhanced" scans) are shown by outlining the card in red dashes. Interpretation errors are subjective and are not specifically shown any differently.

Code name?

Working with the earlier proposed idea that "combed thunderclap" is a codename of some kind, perhaps it is the name of the person intened to read the messege rather that the writer?

"I stole the cuber. Help me, Combed Thunderclap."

(Replace "Combed Thunderclap" with "Obiwan Kanobi" and it seems evident that our villain is Princess Leia! Wink)

This also fits the storyline better, in that it would not make sence for (one of the) theif(s) to be asking US, the people trying to track him down, for help, but rather, the whole thing is a plea to an ally because who ever wrote the message believes we are all too close to dicovering their identity. Yes, this is 98% conjecture, however it seems to fit nicely with what we know if the situation.

May not be a grand revelation but it's one more way of looking at this, and all angles should be concidered.

This is all assuming that we have guessed the text correctly.

As GasparLewis pointed out, The tense is all wrong for 'help me combed'

When looking at the pictures that people have made using the cards, along with my own little wall chart, I am definitly seeing the original 'Help Me Comb LC Thunder Clap'

I'm taking it to mean that LC is London City and that Thunder Clap is either an area/place or a way to let people know who did it, without giving a name (I.E, John Doe = JD = Jammy Doughnut).

As also pointed out, I am jumping on the 'Thunder' bandwagon here. It's possible that it's 'LCTH Under Clap' wherein LCTH could be... London City Terminal; Heathrow. or something equally obscure.

Taking away from the actual message at the moment, This is a call out for people who actually own the cards that have lettering on them. After El Briano posted that new picture (Thanks alot! Very Happy ) I started redoing some of the images that needed photoshopping, an noticed that a certain card,#003 "Earth, Sea and Moon, was undoable simply because the scan wasnt quality enough. So, If someone with a scanner could redo it, It would be apreciated. Smile

I would do it myself, but round these parts PXC cards are harder to come by than a Timmies in New York.

FYI - although I don't have a scanner, but may take a digital photo if it comes out OK, the large letters are quite clear on card 003, despite it having a black background - they are dark grey. This contrasts with Up Down, Right etc. or whatever it is called, which also has a black background but the large letters are invisible. In fact on the new version of the card, even where the large letters fell across the white characters on the card, these have been removed when they were apparent on the previous version. The card symbol has also changed from grey to red.

Well, my original objection of tenses is out the window in the phrase is a name; and the connection to an outside work (the Borges quote) is more than enough to bring me around. But, you can see what I was trying to get at originally. I was also a bit antsy because the L in Thunderclap, for some reason, was being portrayed as an E in the reference picture, and THUNDER CEA__ doesn't bear much context at the mo'.

So, now agreeing with the Combed Thunderclap theorem, I would read it as...
Quote:
[...] cube. Help me, "Combed Thunderclap". (What then follows is instructions to this figure on how to help them.)

or
Quote:
[...] cube. Help me. "Combed Thunderclap"... (What follows is the meaning/correlation of CT to how to help this message-leaver.)

So, this would leave the idea the CT is either a person or a clue.
Meaning... I don't know what it means.

But boy, did I make it sound fancy or what?! Razz

Card #007 (6-clubs) was identified as a card with red-dashes here:

http://perplexcitycardcatalog.com/letters.html

I can't make out any grey "letter" marks at all. I tried freezing then heating the card, but no joy.

I have also tried scanning and adjusting brightness/contrast (and levels) but can't see anything in the upper right which is supposed to complete the "M" or in the lower right which is supposed to complete the "D".

UV?

EDIT: You can see the upper right "M" at PXC's site:

A thought

I was searching around for 'Combed Thunderclap' references, and found something interesting. Combed Thunderclap is a fictional book in a short story called 'The Library of Babel' which is narrated by the librarian. It mentions it as one of the books he is caretaker of. I was thinking thatthe library in Perplex City is a central location, and the head Librarian is (was) Isaac Cymbalisty.

His name starts with 'I', which could correspond with the single letter codename theme, referring to 'I' stole the cube. he's the librarian, corresponding to the librarian in the short story, and he was obviously in trouble (being murdered and all) so he could have put the cry for help on the cards. He also would have had access to the cards as well because he works at the academy.

Just a thought, but the message could be from Cymbalisty, meaning he stole the cube.

For your first paragraph, I would like to award you with this:
Trout The book, Combed Thunderclap was mentioned at the top of page 6 by Ollie, and is then discussed briefly.
Your speculation about Isaac is interesting though, that could be a fresh way to look at it.

?

Does anybody know how many more letters there will be in this... ie, how many more primes in the sequence will be in wave 4?

I suspect if you wander over to www.perplexcitycardcatalog.com and count the number of cards with black bars over their line that read "No data" you can figure out how many primes are left. Alternatively, you could count the number of holes in the above message image. Or perhaps wander over to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prime_numbers and then compare the list there with valid cards.

Was just thinking, the message supposedly says:

"I stole the cube help me combed thunderclap"

Couldn't it be some variation on istolethecubehelpme.com/
