How to Evaluate Trades

I've been doing some card trading by mail. About 90% of the trade offers I get are very fair, but a few of them are way off the mark.

I think the fairest way to evaluate a trade is based on the combined value of the Perplex Points for the cards.

This means that a color-for-color trade is not always a good deal. The number of Perplex Points for a card can vary by 7 points within a single color set. For example, trading Red #27 Bar None for Red #9 Ishihara for means giving away 6 points to get 3 points.

Card point values aren't listed in Bri's great card catalog (yet?) but you can calculate them pretty easily:

Divide the card number by 4 and round up to the nearest whole number.

So the point value of card #17 is 17/4 = 4.25, rounded up=5 points.

If you only need to estimate the relative value of two sets of cards, don't even bother dividing by 4. Just use the card number -- it will be close enough.

For example, if someone want to trade their #9, #13, #42 and #75 for my #46 and #117, is it a good deal for me? Well 9+13+42+75=139 and 46+117=163. Their set is 24 less than my set, which translates into about 6 points less, so I might ask them to sweeten the deal.

Point value isn't the only thing that matters, of course. If you really need a particular card to complete your set you'll give up a lot more to get it. And you could make a good argument that the value of a Black or Silver card exceeds its point value, because of its extreme rarity.

In any case, I thought I'd share these rules of thumb in case someone else might find them helpful.

If anyone else has trade guidelines to share, please do!
