Card Trading Talk

If the "beginning of June" card availability date is correct, we will have cards upon us in the next couple of weeks--meaning we will have duplicate cards upon us and the need to trade. With this in mind, I thought it might be good to start up a discussion about how to best handle this. Let me throw forward a few ideas from the top of my head to see if we can find merits, flaws, or alternatives.

First off, there should be a few goals/rules/things to keep in mind...
1. People will have excess cards they want to trade with
2. People will be missing cards they want to trade for
3. Card values may not be 1:1. That is to say, that a single common red card might be less valuable than a single rare black card.
4. Some people will feel more comfortable trading in person.
5. Some people will be fine with trading through the mail.
6. Some people will want to just sell their extra cards.
7. If you are looking for a card or looking to get rid of a card, it should be relatively easy to find someone with the right card via search.

I would like to propose that a thread is started by an administrator, containing some rules in the first post. Users (who are logged in and can later edit!) can post responses listing what cards they have and what cards they need. If they need a whole bunch of cards, it might be easier to state "a whole bunch" rather than listing out every single one. The cards should be easily searchable as tradeable. For instance, if a user said "cards available: 027", then a search on the boards for 027 would bring up a lot of extra stuff, including puzzles and speculation. If the trading thread told people to mention their cards in a particular format, for instance "TRADE027", then a quick search for "TRADE027" would bring up only relevant results.

The post probably should not list out all sorts of conversion rates (I'll trade you TRADE027 and TRADE028 for your TRADE219), as that could get tricky fast. It should just list "haves" and "needs", then it is up to people in Private Messages to determine values and trade specifics.

The post should probably also state whether the person wants to trade in person (and where they are in the world if that is the case) and/or whether they want to trade by mail (again, a general country might be good for this for shipping reasons).

The whole thing will work as a basic advertisement or storefront. Specifics can be worked out in email ("I'll trade you this-for-that, here's my address, or let's meet up at the local pub.") As a person's extra or desired cards change, they can go back and edit the post to reflect that.

The trading thread should probably be constrained to cards-for-cards. Those that want to trade their cards for something else (like money) are better off at eBay.

So.... any thoughts on this? Is it an entirely-too-silly idea? Might it work? Might it need changes? Might it be better executed elsewhere using different software...an existing webapp or an as-yet-unwritten specialty webapp that someone would like to volunteer for? Should it all just go on eBay?

Having a dedicated forum for card - trading is a definite way to ensure that decent sportsmanship and good - natured haggling prevail, I think. And it seems to be the case that most players aren't jealous about their card hoards to a substantial extent anyhow. The majority, I think, take the view that we'll need to pool resources to solve the central mystery, particularly if the cards turn out, on close inspection, to provide 'clues' to the greater game at large. There needs to be some kind of set - up where those who care for the score table have the opportunity to play as they wish to, but also a way in which overall revelations get related back to everyone. That, I imagine, is what most players on the forum would support. But, obviously, I don't speak for everyone - I speak for myself. So, let's get a heated discussion going!

I definitely think this is a good idea, it'll stop other threads being clogged up with requests/ adverts for cards

just a thought -- dunno where to put it -- but when people get their cards maybe they could tell us in a thread formatted by comma seperation like :-
number, colour, design(pixel hex or whatever), name, quadrant

this would make it easy to put into spreadsheet or database etc

just a thought

tanner, how is:

TRADE027, RED, PIXEL, BAR NONE, BL

(this is for the 333 pxc bar none card btw)

just putting in TRADE027 would help a la Bri's suggestion

I to will support this idea, but if Mind Candy add their own boards for trading, surly that won't be nessesary. We will however need these boards to discuss ARG stuff and solves that probably won't be welcome on any IG boards.
So keep the card boards - we are a community after all Very Happy

Here is where we might want to think about the tradeoffs between usability and completeness. As best as I can tell from the prototype cards, given the card number, you can easily calculate the rest (color is card number / 32, design/suit/set is card number mod 32 divided by 4, etc), meaning it may be extra work to lookup and type and is redundant data. On the other hand, it may be quite useful because it is easier to look at what someone typed than it is to look up that 251 is the lower-left silver pixel set.

Absolutely. If they are going to provide great tools for this sort of thing, then we should not reinvent the wheel.

Something like http://www.tradecardsonline.com/ would be ideal.

I'm not sure how difficult that would be to set up, but if anyone is willing to undertake it I'll offer my services as a webdesigner. I know HTML, and CSS, but no advanced stuff that this would need like php or mysql.

[META] Card Exchange

Now that people can actually purchase cards, I'm hoping to set up a thread to facilitate trading them. The 'Limited Edition Pre-Release Wave 0.5' is only 66 cards, so I'm guessing we're going to get lots of duplicates until the full distribution hits. (I already have 11 extras).

Let me start - I live in Berkeley, CA, and would be happy to trade with anyone in the area (or the U.S., we'll just have to mail each other). My extras are #009, #018, #027, #27 (again), #041, #041 (again), #051, #51 (again), #059, #082, #089, #111, and #120.

[EDIT: merged with previous thread. yanka.]

Out of curiosity, how many packs of cards have you purchased in order to get to the point where you are only missing 9 of the first 66 cards dusty?

From a quick count, it looks like you have about 9 packs worth of duplicates alone. I guess I could use the same logic to deduce that you've probably purchased about 18 or 19 total packs. Is that accurate?

I've only purchased 7 packs thus far and I have about half of the first 66 cards. Blixxt: How many packs have you bought? I have about the same number of duplicates as you (10) so I'm curious to see if I'm getting more or less duplicates than other people. I live in Oakland and get my cards at Games of Berkeley so maybe we could make some trades. My current stock is as follows:

EDIT 1: I've now purchased 13 packs and I posess 52 unique puzzle cards. This puts my duplicate ratio right at 1 in every 3 cards. I've heard a lot of talk about there only being 66 cards available, but I have one card that I do not see in the card catalog yet (Silver #241) so it looks like there are at least 67. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner and there is no text to transcribe so I can't show it Sad

I've updated my current stock as shown below:

RED
-----
#009 (1 Duplicate)
#013 (2 Duplicates)
#014
#015
#017 (1 Duplicate)
#018

#027 (1 Duplicate)

ORANGE

#051 (1 Duplicate)

#059 (1 Duplicate)

YELLOW
---------
#074 (2 Duplicates)
#075
#078
#079
#082
#087
#088
#089
#091 (2 Duplicates)

GREEN
--------
#105 (2 Duplicates)
#106
#107
#110
#111
#112
#117
#120
#123 (2 Duplicates)

BLUE

PURPLE

#181
#182
#184

BLACK
--------

#219

SILVER
---------

Any cards that I have duplicates of are available for trade (or sale I guess).

Hey, I noticed that it wasn't in the catalog and there was no forum dedicated to it yet, but I don't have a scanner at home to get a picture of it up for you guys. I'm not really familiar with scanning things either but I can probably figure out a way to do it at work today. I'm a little weary of uploading a scan that is too high resolution though.

I guess I can check out the Questions forums and there is probably instructions on this sort of thing Smile

I guess that means I have one card that you don't have (for now) hehe.
