[update] The Path of Least Time - August 19

Update on Kurt's blog
Quote:
Key difficulties

Sorry for the lack of updates guys - I've been away at a friend's wedding up north, and I've been having difficulties with my key; I've had to reformat various bits and pieces, run diagnostics, all that sort of stuff. Very irritating but I'd been planning to have a serious tweak with it for some time.
The wedding was pretty good fun; it was one of my cousins, she's an architect. She's only 27... not much older than me now, but she's beginning to settle down, buy a house, all of that domestic bliss thing. I've only met her husband a couple of times in the past but he seems nice enough - at least, he's a pretty good dancer.
When I say 'wedding', I mean the Perplex City equivalent, of course. Since we don't share your religions, the exact wording and process of the ceremony is different, but most ceremonies have the same elements; singing, readings, vows, beautiful surroundings. To be honest, it's pretty interesting how our different cultures have converged in this way, although I suppose you know very well from your own world that human societies tend to converge in these things anyway.

Aha! So they're HUMAN! Smile

That key trouble worries me though. Ever since he started looking at stuff for us he's been plagued with problems. Maybe he should just get a new key Smile

It would really suck if anything happened to Kurt.

Can we imply from this that Perplex City exists in an environment where there are non-human societies? Or is that being too fanciful?

If a Key was a computer then I would suggest wiping it and starting again, but I guess we don't know if the two technologies are similar in that way... Ah, so many unanswered questions...

If the technology (and the people writing the virus) were sufficiently advanced, they might have inserted something into the Key equivalent of the BIOS or firmware, meaning a simple reformat would not be sufficient. Kurt, being technically savvy, probably knows this already, though. It is also possible that the innerworkings of their Keys are so vastly different from our current computers that there is no such analogy as "reformat and reinstall." For instance, how would you reformat your cellphone? If you had a previous revision of its firmware and the right cable, you could probably reinstall that, but then who's to say it does not get patched later? Many cellphones accept firmware patches over the air from the service provider.

Gahh Winders!

They have the equivalent of Windows! That is the only explanation for his problems. Of all the things to have similar to our planet yeeesh!

Now we are being teased that there are other areas of the plant that they are on. Yet we are only getting a map of the city. Do the other areas not matter? Who or for that matter what inhabits them. Robots? Sub Humans? Other?

I wonder what a new Key costs maybe we could take up a collection for him to get a new one.
