Ikonnikoff Tragedy Memorial Planted
Nine trees were planted at the periphery of the Diamond Span in memorial to the nine who lost their lives in a series of freak accidents last year while hiking in Catbite. Relatives of the nine victims of the so-called Ikonnikoff tragedy each spoke shortly about their memories of the victims, and publicly absolved Ikonnikoff Outdoor Adventures of any blame.

"I speak on behalf of all of the families when I say that those who have been encouraging us to file a lawsuit have nothing but base greed in their hearts," said Cecilia Hu, the mother of Frances and Jordan Hu, both only 19 when they were killed in the fire last August. "Even Trip Ikonnikoff himself lost his son in this awful accident. It would be a failure of justice to attack him in the courts when he should be grieving alongside us."

John Wisdom, father to victim James Wisdom, 20, concurred. In his own speech, he added that "we can only draw one lesson from this, to live each day deeply, because fate is so terrible and unknowable."

The nine dead, all students, were participating in a week-long camping tour run by Ikonnikoff Outdoor Adventures. A sudden lightning storm brewed on the last day of the trip, and a nearby lightning strike simultaneously disabled the group's keys and started a forest fire. The group set off emergency flares, but were overwhelmed by smoke before rescuers had an opportunity to respond. The fire subsequently took nearly a week to extinguish.

The trees are planted in a circle at the edge of the Diamond Span, surrounding a granite memorial and lookout point detailing the events of the tragedy. A lantern has been placed in the centre of the circle to serve as a symbolic eternal flame.

This is probably ludicrous and perhaps pointless to comment upon but when I read this I immediately thought of the folks at Mind Candy Design.

Two of those lost were siblings with an Asian surname (Hu/Hon) and given names that are generally gender neutral (Frances and Adrian). There were also 9 in total which is the number of names on their "People" page.

Is this just an inside joke, nothing at all, or another mind-spinning part of the IG/OOG crossover?

I think it's Dan Hon, not Don.

I went on the Academy's site, and it looks like you can search the library resources... if you have the username and password, of course.

I think the better question is, have you seen this: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/search.php

To answer your question, yes. Sorry, I just felt like being an @$$.

Yes, yes we have. Multiple times. I was going to lob a trout in your direction and point you to the many topics that have pointed to this fact (as well as the fact that they are still currently hard-coded to always return a failure), but search seems a little off right now (as well as RSS), so I can't really fault you for not finding it when using the Search link up there in the upper-right of the webpage, like I am sure you did. It may just be me being overly-suspicious... and don't get me wrong, I think that is a necesity for ARG's... but are keys really so sensitive that a lightning strike could all out disable them?

To me, it just does not seem right... if we took a handheld or a laptop to an area and lightning struck nearby, it would do nothing to them. The only way they would short out would be if the lightning struck power lines and the things happened to be connected to the power-but, of course, we're talking about something out in the middle of a forrest here. I doubt that keys are really so inefficient...

Maybe the 9 students stumbled upon something they werent meant to see? And whoever or whatever was protecting/watching over it, made the fire to cover up their tracks...

And, I mean, who in their right mind camps out in the middle of a storm?

Well, before I went out there I would have listened for a weather report... and if that failed (Which isn't rare), I'd either get the heck home if I transport, or stay the night were that the only choice... But then, only a very small percent of forrest fires (at least here) are started naturally, especially by lightning. Most of them are purposefully started. Which goes back to my theory.

We don't know exactly how keys work, but if they connect to towers like our phones do then the lightning could have hit the nearest tower, disabling it and causing all of their keys to go out of range.

That is a definite possibility and a great idea. If the keys do function off towers, which wouldn't suprise me, it is very possible that a nearby "key tower" was struck and that was what caused the keys to go out.

Do we know if PPC has a space program? Because if they do, it is also very likely keys are rather controlled via satellite...

SPEC -- those kids got caught in a freak thunder storm? might that have been the effects of the use of Reynolds ionizers??
