So, what are we trying to figure out now? Is it about the Greek Letter Cipher in thealchemists GreatestJournal? (Sorry I'm a little bit slow *haha*, I'm quite impressed at the speed everyone's managed to work this out!)

Biology Time

Let's dissect:

The Alchemists "book" wrote:

"When great minds reap the knowledge of Earth's skin, the most abundant of substances, only then can the knowledge recorded here be unlocked. Now listen to the story I have to tell you.

Taken literally, the most abundant element in the Earth's crust is Oxygen at 46.6%

Yeah, that's all I have for now. BBL.

True, but since it's Alchemy and not chemistry different rules apply. It may be water, or some other compound or something else.

The A's were crossed out on the envelopes, thus telling us to ignore that final A in the cipher, yes?

So, thealchemistsGJ = thealchemists - greatestjournal user

J5, no rot was ever needed. The hex just almost works due to the way numbers work IRL. (See my previous post where I had the clean solve, no rots).

Basically, to explain better, we had digits in a range less than 26. Lowest was 47, so I assumed 47 = A, and just subracted 46 from everything. Then it was a simple A=1, B=2...Z=26. The Hex came out correctly with a proper rot because of the way numbers naturally work. the AC in our code was 47,49...in decimal, its still only 2 numbers apart, just like hex...but when you got from 49 to 50...its now 6 numbers apart in Hex, not 1, explaining the difference between the ROT-14 and ROT-20. Make sense?

No Rot was ever needed, and the MAP at the end is a red herring AFAIC.

*chuckles* I was thinking that's what I was thinking we'd need to go with that but at 4AM the brain doesn't want to do all that counting, good work though Smile

(Thanks for the warm welcome Phaedra! Very Happy )

Oh thank goodness someone else has seen the update at http://www.greatestjournal.com/users/thealchemists/ regarding the red moon drawing! *haha* I thought I was REALLY unobservant and it had been there all along Laughing

There also appears to be a Chinese Character down by the bottom left area where it says "Mood: excited", and I don't think it was there before. Anyway, I'm an insane freak for Asiatic languages, and that character in Mandarin is level tone XI (pronounced shi). Anywho it means "Play" or "Sport".

The interesting thing is, and maybe a little misleading Confused , is that there is a Greek Letter ALSO known as XI (pronounced like the x in box). Don't know...maybe that's the cipher letter???

My pleasure. Glad to have someone with Asiastic language expertise around. I took one look at Mandarin during my third semester of linguistics and ran screaming the other way. I like Afro-Asiastic languages but the actually Asiastic ones terrify me. Wink

Incidentally (for everyone), I've been noticing a lot of people quoting entire URLs. This is not a criticism, just an FYI, in case you're unaware:

While it's often useful to visibly quote the URL (in, for example, a post in which the URL is the solution to a puzzle) if you want to prettify your posts, you can use the URL button (on the far right side of the top row of buttons in your "Post a reply" window) to make a word into a link. So, for example, Whalewashingdolphin's post above could look like this:

Whalewashingdolphin wrote:

If you want to hand-code that, you'd type [.url=(the url)](word you want linked) (without that first . before the first "url" -- I just put that in there so the forum wouldn't read it as an actual indication of a URL). Or, using the example above, [.url=http://www.greatestjournal.com/users/thealchemists/]blog (again, sans the first period).

Again, not a criticism, just an FYI. Smile

I always figured it was pronounced "kai"

*haha* sorry, the Greek letter's probably pronounced 'Kai', I guess I meant that the letter Kai makes the sound of the x in box (or, more closely, like the ch in loch).

(Thanks too Phaedra for the information about turning a URL into a word...I wondered how that was done Wink )

I have NO clue on how to break that encryption on the site...*waaa* Anyone else have any luck??

He gave us the cipher and it only took a few minutes for all of us working on the IRC channel to crack it Smile The deciphered text is (spaces added by me):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
what idea truly began the human quest for knowledge and mastery over the world writing yes writing was a necessary step but any language or alphabet is a mere human construct humanity first became true magic workers when they realized how to go beyond the illusion to the truth behind this code is not truly a matter of letters is it
