So maybe the thing to do was to just pretend you've spoken to alex or rajiv, or pretend you were really busy and had talked to his supervisors and would get the tech support guy in trouble if he didn't activate it?

Yeah, thats more or less what I did, on my 3rd call attempt. The only problem was that I mentioned theadvisor account, which PuzzledPineapple was using as well, so the dude got spooked and cut me off. Yeah it is a form of 'social engineering', but not in the same league that you're talking about robotnik. Anyway, the account has access to the AC in less than 48 hours, so its all good fun Smile

Presumably we're meant to use the air-con controls to cause data leaks... Hmmm

Did anyone actually do anything then? It sounds to me like a waste of time and that they are just upgrading the account for the fun of it! Since only the advisor was mentioned, and then by multiple people, I suppose the tech support guy was 'pushed' into the right direction, gave up and said he would upgrade. I'm still wondering what code we're gonna need off the Alex Mitchell guy and when we need to use it?! Hmm...interesting.

Incidentally, I phoned up and shit myself since I didnt think what to ask about before hand. I mumbled something about needing help with faulty air con and he responded saying the only think he could do would be to upgrade my key. At that point I made up some excuse and hung up...supposedly he would have gone on to mentioning contacting him on my key for authorisation after talking to Alex Mitchell. At least we all got what we needed.

Did you not read the thread? it sounds like you couldn't just ring up and say 'please give me access to the air conditioning', you had to have a convincing reason to get it, just like any real building or company. and like in any real life situation, there are a bunch of ways to get through - i bet the code was the 'legit' way, but you could've spun a whole bunch of other stories that might have worked (like pineapple with her pretending to be the advisor). seems like the trick here was to be able to spin a convincing line of bs that made sense, without shitting yourself and hanging up Wink to be fair, it's pretty difficult.

Argh i missed it!

And I had a true tech support problem:
the heat sensor still won't work on my comp!

I blame British Summer Time and the second day of school.

I cam so very let into this latest string (got the tyme wrong) But did anyone try Library Services through the Academy's Website? I tried both the t980 and 2980 but i didn't even get an error... nor anything else, but then i can't get the Heat Program to run, either....

Also, The abit the dropped about the Forest as a password. The latest installment of Futures came up with Rudon Forest. I was kinda hurried but i through it into a couple of the password games and nothing came up. I'm gonna play more with it, though.

Yep. It was addressed about a half-dozen times, the first being here.

I had to go back to the Academy website and check that the JavaScript still is hard-coded to always return a failure. One of these days we will trout someone and it will turn out that the JS changed and he/she was correct! Very Happy

Good job pineapple on finally nailing the sequence!

For the record, I picked up some other bits of info that might become relevant:

Tech Support guy's name was Anthony Johns(t?)on

When I called and he told me I need to speak to Alex Mitchell I replied 'you mean Alex Warner', which I think threw him. He then explained to me that Alex Warner was in charge of building defence, and Alex Mitchell was for Building Maintenance.

FOr me, the funniest bit was when I pretended to be Pietro:

Me: I am Pietro Salk, I've received numerous threatening emails from some woman claiming to be "the advisor" I want to investigate her. Please help me by giving me her room number and floor.

Tech Support: Wow, you sound great, for someone who's dead.

Me: I'm calling from beyond the grave. So where does she live?

Tech Support: I'm really not trained in manners of this fashion. Maybe you should try a Church.

Me: But... *click

I didn't have time to point out that there are no churches in Perplex CIty.

Agree, the guy was a good winger, I could hear him struggling to come up with a name to refer me to at one point! Full marks though, he did better than we did... I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the buzz of attempting to phreak info from this guy even though i obviously completely sucked at it!! Smile

I don't think that would have helped, there *are* churches in Perplex City, at least in the old city. See "The tower of cubes"

Ack! I'd been looking forward to this and then we go and have the biggest thunderstorm in Yorkshire that we've had in years - no way I was plugging my PC in or putting a phone to my ear with all that lightning striking all around me Sad

I don't understand... isn't this a bit like hacking, but with people? i remember hearing about a guy called kevin mitnick who used to get passwords and access just by calling up tech support and making up a story, pretending to have talked to supervisors and managers? i think it's called social engineering.

Yup, social engineering. The key to hacking/cracking a system is to target the weakest point, and often the weakest point is a pink fleshy idiot in control of the thing.

FREE KEVIN! Um, or something.....
