This is quite an interresting development I'm very sad that I missed it.

I need to check the forums more often.

I missed it as well, and I even knew it was happening. Oh well, the next date is Wednesday, at the same time.

I'm guessing we will not get a 'data leak' for the Advisor until quite some time into the process as we don't really know enough about other residents of the Point to be interested in them and will probably not be so vigilant on scanning names after the Advisor is found...

This comment in the sentinel;

Quote:
it would appear that the bugs and infrastructural maladies plaguing Ascendancy Point have been identified, and steps are in place to perform necessary repairs and upgrades, spokesmen say.

together with this notice from the ascendency point site;

Quote:
20th August 268:
The Building Maintenance system is due for a scheduled upgrade on September 14th 268. Please contact technical support for more information.

suggest we've only got until 14th Sep to get the advisers identity. (or to get as much data leaked as we can anyway!!)

But if Tech support is going to be open again we have alot more names, though not passwords, to go on. are we supposed to flood the phones again?

Well, I have no idea if this is proper, correct, kosher, or will even work, but I can point you guys to my own variant of the AC client. It is available in both jar file form and source code. Most modern operating systems with recent Java versions will let you download and double-click the jar file to run.

This is basically the same client you get when downloading from the website, but with three extra buttons at the top-right of the main window:
red - turn on all heaters, turn off all coolers
blue - turn on all coolers, turn off all heaters
yellow - alter the board so that a heater is placed next to each sensor

I do have to warn that I have not been able to test this against the servers during that "data leak window," so I have no idea if it will help us get data leaks faster or if the server is smart enough to know that it is receiving data from an altered client application.

I'm not familiar with password encryption proccesses, but there's something strange about the simulation log-in. Beyond a certain point, it doesn't seem to care what I type in the password space.

I misread the password at first and used thelimelight instead and the simulator still worked. I have also tried thelimelike and thelimelimb. The system accepted both of these passwords as legitimate and allowed me to run the simulation. Haven't been around at one of the critical times yet, though. Sad

It doesn't seem to care about anything beyond thelimeli

Don't know what it means. Confused

The truncation of the password was discussed a little while ago:

Just appears to need only the first 8 letters of the password. Smile

I had a strange thing happen, I was able to access the AC client without even typing a username and password in!!

I've taken a look at the source and I can't see any obvious 'data' thats sent to the servers to verify the client. If I was writing an anti-mod system I'd have the client app count the number of lines of code it uses, then send that number over to the server so any additions would register, but hey, thats me and probably not the PM's. Great mods Bri, I was working on something similar.

The client itself is not validated (checksums, etc), but it does send data to the server--mainly your map layout and the timestamped commands you used to crash the system, which could be passed through a few sanity checks. I make no effort to make the commands look terribly real--when you hit the red "turn on all the heat" button, you basically get a flood of commands that all occur in the same second. When you hit the yellow "alter the map" button, it does alter the map, but I do not know whether the map is built according to a certain algorithm that the server then verifies. Altering the map would make it suddenly not conform to the algorithm.

My guess is that everything will be fine--I wouldn't think the server would do huge amounts of verification--I just thought I would mention the possibility.

The user name and password are only required the first time you want to run the application. Other than that, it only gets used to verify that the version you're running is the latest and greatest version. If you're running a hacked version, you don't want to enter a user name and password Smile

Yeah, but then we'd just hack it and hard-code the right answer Wink

As was I, except I'm lazy and was just trying to get it to connect to the server constantly and save the results to a file. Definitely not kosher... I think Brian's version is much more palatable Smile

sounds messy, but then lazyness is the sign of an experienced programmer!!! Smile

Going slightly off topic here, are you ,Bri and WolverineFan, in the IT industry like me, or are you just a hobbyists?

I'm in the IT industry (programmer) as well. I believe there are a few more of us on the forums too, though Bri is so fast he tends to beat most of us to the punch Smile
