[SOLVED] #219 Black - The Master of Secrets

The hieroglyphs translate to a riddle. Wont bore you with the transliteration and my engrish translation but it talks about being the kings backbone, suckle of the ford bull, making plants grow and being the mouth of Egypt. The whole text seems to be taken from Urk IV if anyone cares. solved the riddle as
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the river Nile

if anyone would like the full transliteration and translation tell me and i'll post it

Edit: Topic - Wishi-san

Nice one!

Picked that one up, thought 'bugger that looks hard', then tried the red 'easy' one.

The card itself:

specially for connor in IRC....

ink imAh nsw
ink mrrw n it=i
iw Sdy=i r mSdt kA
iw sS n=i aSAt Hr
sS iswt nt kmt
iw sw(A)D n=i r n kmt
iw srd.n=i hAw
Hna nht
ink sS ikr n Dba=f
ink kAry wAD n Dba=f
ptr rn=i

thats the transliteration for the glyphs (the bit to get to the translation)

I've translated it as:

I am the King's backbone (literally: spinal cord)
I am the love of my Father
I suckle the ford bull
*
The scribes of the old times of Egypt hand over to the mouth of Egypt
I made the plants grow together with the sycamore
I am the trustworthy scribe of his fingers
I am the great green gardener of his finger
Who/What is my name?

the * relates to a line I have in transliteration and in a dodgy english translation. What I have is "the multitude of scribes to me"

never the less i get the solution as The River Nile as it would be all these things. Though when I am in uni next week I can always check it in the library with Urk IV.

Salkunh: is there any way to translate those hieroglyphics without learning the language? I assume you're a student in that field, but what about the rest of us? Is there a place to find the answer? (And don't say the Rosetta Stone Smile )

Not really. You would have to be studying it because it is a full text with full verb forms and non-translatable parts like iw. It's also from a pretty obscure set of texts which iirc have never been published in English, though I could be wrong about that as I have never actually studied any of those texts.

Short of reading the How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs book by Mark Collier (random plug for lecturer), Gardiners Grammar and studying it for a while would you really be able to do it. Especially as there is no decent dictionary online or place to search the texts by glyphic symbol Rolling Eyes

The day before I got my package I saw someone on the Jubilee line translating what looked like those glyphs, was it anyone here? I only remembered it when my GF pointed it out after seeing this card.

Blimey, then my hat's off to you. At least we know what kind of level the higher cards are aimed at (i.e. frickin' impossible for me). I'm off to learn Navajo just in case...

hahaha omg, I can't believe Perlexians went in so much trouble to make this one. I was actually thinking it would be a simpler "egyptian font in doc->some venegere->some coded message" type of puzzle. this is just way out my league atm. I mean I did want to go into egyptology, but only because I've been influenced by Indiana Jones as a kid.

As for Navajo, you do that and I'll start Aramaic and a bunch of those extant slavic languages just in case...

PS geez, they really think people with PhDs are playing this?Smile

I dont think its PhD level, its more the higher the cards go the more interaction is needed, like anyone can solve red cards and maybe a few steps up....black and silver maybe made for communities like UF...

Also if the PMs have been reading the IRC logs, they would of known for quite a while that Jo/Salkunh does egyptology....so i dont think they worried about releasing this little puzzle Smile
