[metaish]Mind Candy profits...

Okay, just looking on the leaderboard, there are 11897 cards sold, with 6 to a pack costing £2.50, that's just under £5,000. Including unsolved and unentered cards, we're hitting probably only £7,500 earned for MC, and since they'll be looking to earn, what, £100,000 + £150,000 (prize + (event costs, profits, pay blah)), they've only got 1/33 of the money they need... Isn't that a bit of a worry? Or is that just me being silly?

Jeb

PS, this is kind of Puzzle Card META, but if anyone wants to move it to the main meta section, I shan't be offended Smile

Running this ARG would cost a LOT more than £50,000. And I would have thought all the unsolved cards would make about £25,000 from cards. I'm not sure if this is their only source of revenue though.

Wait until 30th Nov (according to that site) if you want a look at the books. It'll only cost £9.

In response to various questions at CubeFest, mainly regarding the nature of any "corporate" sponsorship which PxC was receiving/featuring, MindCandy told us that they had "a number" of different investors, who were very interested in the concept of ARG's and being involved from a very early stage.

If you haven't seen the video of Michael Smith's talk that day, I'm sure someone has a linky to it somewhere, he doesn't mention specific investor details on it (that came when several of us cornered him later with a desk lamp. a feather duster and a small dachsund named Colin) but he does talk about how they are finding that people are swiftly coming around to the idea of ARG's, but not always grasping the concept - mentioning us as not just "early adopters" but "UBER early adopters".

Simple answer - MC have private backing, and short of them taking us all down into the bullion vault below their secret island base (in the hollowed out volcano, naturally) we just need to take their word for it that they are good for the prize money.

I'm sure they're good for the money for this series but for there to be a second surely they need to demonstrate to these investors that ARGs can be commercially successful while remaining stand alone. What I find most appealing about this ARG is that they're not trying to flog me lager/films/cars at the same time.

Maybe they're getting a Sente doll ready for Christmas.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't questioning the prize money, just the longeitivity of the company beyond this first game (since they are suggesting that there will be more to follow after), just as long as the investors are investing for the long term, everything should be fine... Smile E.C., 4/5 of cards remain unsolved? You reckon, I dunno, I suppose this is all speculation at best, but even so... I did suggest £100k + £150k, but i suppose with investor profits as well, perhaps £100k + £250k? (The £100k is the prize, the £150/250k is the profits, costs, pay etc)

I dunno, it's difficult to assess whether this would be a fucking brilliant investment, or a good way to throw away a lot of money Smile

I'm sure they'll do fine Smile Good luck to them Smile

Maybe it's like the producers-they have so much investment behind them they want a huge flop. Springtime for Sente-Sing up at the back.

Mind candy seem like the sort of people who could seduce old ladies.
